Being sick during the work-a-day portion of this new year, I hadn’t yet been able visit Great River Park. I wanted to stop on my way to work yesterday, but I wasn’t sure it was a good idea. We had received a small amount of snow overnight. Such an insignificant amount of snow wouldn’t normally bother me, but the entrance to the park is steep, it curves, and it ends next to a river. However, once I saw that a few other cars had made the trip, I figured:
“It can’t be too crazy, I mean others have done it.”
It might be better if the playlist of my life didn’t include artists like Mary Chapin Carpenter (see below gallery).
This post is part of Linda G. Hill’s fun weekly series One-Liner Wednesday. And, given the time of the year, it’s also part of Just-Jot-January. If you have a one-liner, I’d encourage you to join in on the fun. You can follow this link to participate and to see the one-liners from the other participants.
If the video starts at the beginning, skip to about 48 seconds to get to the song
Your cold is still hanging in there, eh? Sorry to hear that.

Thank God for those ropes. I can see the next Dan Accident update…so early in the year too. Those are beautiful snow shots of the park. The one thing I love about snow is the nearly inaudible crackling sound it makes when it falls. Snow at night takes my breath away. Glad you’re on the mend and stay warm. Happy Wednesday, Dan.

Thanks Cheryl. I am actually quite careful when I visit the park. If there’s more than an inch of snow, they usually close the upper gates. They have blocked us from going on the boat ramp (as if they know something).

Sometimes I think that a light covering of snow is worse for driving. It makes the road slick and people don’t adjust their driving accordingly. When I read the part about steep, curves, and ends at a river I thought it couldn’t end well 😉
I’m happy to say that there isn’t any snow here and the temperatures remain relatively mild. All in all, my kind of winter 🙂 I’m sure there are many who would argue with me especially after yesterday’s soggy rainy day, but I’m going to enjoy this for as long as it lasts!

Thanks Joanne. Light snow is dangerous, because people tend to ignore it and get into trouble. It is slick. I was going slow and steady. No desire to see how well my car floats. I’m not going to complain about the rain we’ve had. Had it been snow, it would have been almost 4 feet since just before Christmas.

That could be someone’s infamous last one-liner. Glad it wasn’t yours.
I agree with Joanne that sometimes that thin bit of snow is worse than three inches, especially at the start of winter. People forget that it only serves to make the road greasy and that’s when the tow trucks are called.
Be safe out there on the roads, Dan, and hope you are feeling more like yourself this week.

Thanks Mary. It’s been slow going (figuratively and literally) this week. I’m serious about driving in the snow. I exercise caution. If there had been three inches, I would have stayed home – who need’s that aggravation?

Thanks Frank. A few more weeks of that, and then I might start to see the sunrise in the distance. Right now, just darkness.

Beautiful shots of snow, lights and reflections. I agree that a lot of people get stupid driving when there’s a light coating of snow….like the idiots who like to see how far they can skid without hitting anything or anyone!!
I laughed out loud at Maddie enjoying the cardboard tube. Murphy will do the same thing. Apparently even our fur babies like the simple things in life sometimes!!
Looks like you need to find a new space for your at-home work desk because MiMi looks likes she’s “had it” with your intrusions into her space! Lol.
And MuMu just wants to be well groomed….or maybe that’s fussed over….or perhaps spoiled rotten. Whatever it is, she knows how to get what she wants from dad!
Hope this cold doesn’t hang on much longer. Everything is a little harder to do when you don’t feel up to par. 😷🤒💊

Thanks Ginger. You’re right. It’s not the snow that scares me, it’s being on the road with the other drivers. Especially the ones who forget that 4-wheel drive doesn’t help you stop any better.
Maddie love those tubes. I gave her a heavy one this summer, from a roll of building material. She couldn’t tear it up easily so she started swinging it and growling. I thought she was going to hurt us if she hit us with it.
I keep looking for the place I’m going to call my own when I retire, and I haven’t found a good one yet. I think we need to start negotiations.
This cold just seems to want to linger. My coworkers, who had this before, told me they had it for weeks.

No touching, Dan! That is so cute. Piper was sleeping in my lap last night and I got to cuddle her little paw. So adorable. Down here in sunny FL, it seems everyone is having an allergy attack this winter. I have never had allergies, but finally went to the doctor….two months into a nose that would not stop running and eyes that would not stop tearing. Something weird is going on with weather everywhere. Hope you feel better soon.

Aw, neither of these girls seem to like me rubbing their paws. I keep trying with MiMi, but she eventually smacks me.When she sits with all four feet tangled up, I grab one and ask “which foot is this?” – She is never amused..This stuff is either moving around or getting ready to move out. I can’t tell from day to day, but it’s not gone and I’m getting grumpy.

Your early-morning shots looks very pretty, Dan, but I have to admit that I looked at your thin layer of snow today with such envy. After dumping yet another foot of snow on Sunday and Monday, we are now sitting at nearly 5 feet of snow. I’ve run out of room to put it in certain spots in my yard. It’s snowing again at the moment… and it’s only January.
This is why I will have my Christmas decorations up, and the lights turned on, until March. Possibly April, depending on when/if this snow ever stops. :-/

I’m sorry for you, Wendy. We have been on the warm side of the rain/snow line that has dumped about 5 inches of rain on us in the past three weeks. I wouldn’t want to be dealing with it had that been snow. Leave those Christmas lights shining! I hope you have enough firewood and have a way to get to it.

The funny thing is that that was the one thing I WAS prepared for this year. Extra, extra, EXTRA wood… but here I am, burning less than ever (and still having to sleep with the window open a good majority of the time! :P). Oh, well, it’ll be a leg-up on next winter’s wood!

Thanks Laurie. I’m glad you liked the song. Mary Chapin is one of my favorite artists. I took my daughter to one of her concerts when my daughter was still in high school. Last year, she took me to see her in concert for my birthday. Both were small venues and she’s still an amazing entertainer.

Good to see you back at work. Come November that will be a thing of the past but for now, you need to get in there. Twiggy hates to have her feet touched so I know what that’s all about. Glad you minded the ropes and cones. Looks slippery to me.

Thanks John. I know the drill, and I know that the drill continues for 10 months. The really scary thing about that light cover of snow, is that it’s sitting on the silt/mud they never cleaned from the flooding the prior week. It looks like a snow-covered sidewalk, but I’m guessing it feels more like a Slip ‘n Slide. One-way ticket to the river!

This whole thing about icy/slushy roads and a steep entrance down to the main road is the whole reason why we got an all wheel drive in the summer, because we were home bound for 3 weekends in a row last winter!
I should have replied last week when you wrote that you get bored if you stay home when feeling under the weather – clearing my throat – you should have :-p
But your night images are amazing!

If other people jumped off the bridge, would you think it was a good idea? …Oh, sorry, went into Mom Mode, there. I love that picture of the snow coming down all sparkly. And Maddie’s new toy: Chickie’s favorite toys are whatever she can find. It sure is going to save me money, because I might as well NOT buy toys when she’s happier with a milkie or a pen or styrofoam ball!

Yes, I could hear my mother as I was driving down the entrance. Seriously, why spend money on cat toys, when they’re happier with the bag and the bow?
