We’re Having a Heat Wave

Another week in which I am giving myself a break from writing. Enjoy the pictures and, in case you have that song stuck, the music below.

You can go back to sleep in a few minutes, MiMi.
One way to beat the 90° heat.
This is where we sit when the thunder happens.
Sigh…Maddie, the shadows were the intended subject.
From Snoopy’s house, Mr. Blue Jay can see all the peanuts. You have to be a good shot to get the peanut to the squirrel.
“Gotcha!”
We still have some honeysuckle blooming. The smell is sweet.
Coming in for a landing.
“I was lucky to get this before the Blue Jay.”
“Hey guys. I think the game is in the other park.”
“Thanks for noticing!” Someone left this painted rock of Eeyore in the park.
Last night’s rain didn’t do much to lower the temperature.
Along the entrance to the park.
I’m not sure if these are freeze-pops or something else, but I remember enjoying these as a child.
Hi bunny bunny. Don’t worr about Maddie and me. We won’t bother you.
I guess we’re leaving the sea monster tree in the river.

    • Thanks Judy. The rock was well done. I worked outside Friday and Saturday mornings, cutting back bushes that have grown to large. They look awful now, but they will come back (they have before). I hope you have a nice week and can beat the heat.

  2. Those bluejays are quick to steal the peanuts from the squirrels, that’s for sure.
    I used to watch where the jays went, because they would attempt to hide them sometimes. They’d pull a leaf over the nut and when they left, I stole it back!!

    • I think you should stand on your balcony and scream :) OK, that might not be a good idea, but the forecast has us in the high 80s and 90s through Sunday. The air is really gross.

      I’m glad the rock gave yo a smile. I think that’s what the artist wanted. I hope you have a good week.

  6. Even if you’re one of the coolest guys ever, and couldn’t get much cooler if you tried, you still deserve to chill out and enjoy ice cream in the shade when it’s that hot out! Love the bee and the bunny photos, great catches!

    • I am happy for you, Pam. Really, I am, but I’m a little jealous. The overnight low Saturday into Sunday was in the 70s :(

      Ella did a great job on that song. So many people have a recording of it, but that’s the only one I would ever choose.

  8. I didn’t know Ella sang Heat Wave–I was expecting Martha and the Vandellas. Every time our A/C clicks on, I see dollar signs. The bill for this month is gonna be a doozie!

  9. Ella was one of the best! I don’t think she could’ve hit a sour note if she tried!

    The bee and the bunny shots are super. And I love the look of the sea monster tree in the water!!

    I made two “bee baths” that I thought would go untouched. I am amazed at the amount of bees that frequent them to drink water! 😃

    We are having some very welcome, gentle rain right now, but heat & humidity are due back later today. 😡
    Funny, I remember saying during the winter that I wouldn’t be complaining about the heat this summer!! Boy! Did I lie!! 🙄 Lol.

    • When I thought of including that song, Ginger, she’s the talent I looked for. She was right on top.

      The bee baths sound pretty cool.I just looked it up. I wonder if we could do that without Maddie or the squirrels knocking them over. We can’t have a bird bath because Maddie drinks out of it – no matter what is in it – even though she expects us to change the water in her water bowl after she slobs it up.

      We had a little rain Saturday night, but it didn’t help much. I hope it cools off for you (and us) this week.

      • For now, I just sit each of them on a flat paving stone on the ground. I do want to raise them up, so I’m thinking of finding two flower pots that will accommodate the “baths”. I figured I would weigh the flower pots down with either dirt or stones…..either would work. The “baths” are simply clay saucers (maybe 10″) that sat under now broken flower pots. As you no doubt can tell, I went the cheap route because I really didn’t think they’d attract any visitors!! Silly me. 😃

        When my friend brings her two dogs over to run off energy, (our yard is fenced) and apparently to thoroughly fertilize the yard, they both stand there drinking from the birdbath and their bowl of water alternately!! And yes, these two doofy guys couldn’t care less what else might be in the birdbath besides water!! 😳 But, they have never drunk from the bee bath which is more easily accessible and there’s never a bee in sight when they’re zooming around!!

  10. Dan, I spent the 4th of July in Miami and couldn’t believe that it was 78 and breezy while we were watching fireworks. Just one week ago we were experiencing dangerous highs. Good luck with your heat wave. Love the yellow flower with the bee.

  11. Ha, when I first saw that pic of Maddie and the shadows, I thought she was carrying a big stick in her mouth. Now I see it’s a big crack in the asphalt. Hope you both manage to stay cool!

    • Thanks Deborah. I do kinda like the sea monster. I got a wonderful picture (I think) of what looks like a juvenile heron sitting right at the tip of it.

      No break in the forecast through Sunday :(

    • I’m inside at work, but I do have some project work that I have to do outside at home. I have knocked off around noon these past days, because it’s been too hot. I’m trying not to complain, because I also remember May ;)

  15. Glad you’re taking some time off. We’re having a bit of a cool(er) wave here but still waiting for the AC guy to come take a look at the AC…which naturally seems to be working fine now that it’s cooler. :-) However, we know there are problems, so hopefully they’ll get here, find it/them/, and fix them.

    See you when it’s cooler.

      • Makes sense. The man who was supposed to fix the AC didn’t show up, didn’t call either. My husband contacted the home warranty company who called him and then he called and said he’ll be here tomorrow. No explanation. Sigh. At least it’s cooling off at night.

  16. We aren’t all that hot, but we’re a much higher altitude. Thunderstorms everyday, some with hail. Funny about the rock. Today I noticed a painted heart shaped one near my apartment hallway door. Cool!

  18. It is quite common for people to have ice creams when they feel hot. Nothing wrong in that. However, eating ice cream during summers would actually heat up your body because of its efficacy. So, the more ice cream you eat, the warmer your body gets from within and that means more sweat. If you want to beat the heat, choose coconut water, watermelon, or anything curd-based like buttermilk. You can also go for fresh lime water and add onions in your diet, you know like in your salad you add extra onions and that should help you stay cool even in hot conditions. You’ll see the difference it makes when you walk out in the sun. Maybe you already know all this, but some handy information is always useful.

    • Thanks Sharukh. My wife has been a forever fan of coconut water. If I’m working outside in the heat, she often makes me drink some. I’m not a big fan of the taste, but it does work. I usually drink water with lemon juice in it. I have onions on anything I can get with onions.

      • I believe she will love Kerala (southern Indian state). Sarah and I both love coconut water. I’m not much into fresh lime water (because I might lose my very limited fat content), but I am a buttermilk fan.

  19. Hi Dan – enjoy that summer sun … ours has sort of slightly wandered! But still warm and dry – the main thing. Have a great few weeks off … if the weather keeps you in the holiday mode. Lovely photos – cheers Hilary

    • Thanks Hilary. I would enjoy the sun a bit more if it was 5-7 degrees cooler. 85°f (29.5°c) is much easier to deal with than 92. But, it’s better than the cold rainy spring we were still having 6 weeks ago.

  22. It’s funny: Hubby and I sat down to watch Grumpy Old Men the other day for the first time in probably 20 years and this song came on in the opening credits. I had never heard it before in my life (or at least had never paid it any attention), and—like so many others—was raised with the Martha and the Vandellas song of the same name.
