Yesterday was a very long day – my last day in the office. People have been asking me about my future plans, but lately the question has been: “What’s the first thing you’re going to do?” My answer:
“I’m going to thank a lot of people.”
This post is part of Linda G. Hill’s fun weekly series One-Liner Wednesday. If you have a one-liner, I’d encourage you to join in on the fun. You can follow this link to participate and to see the one-liners from the other participants.
The gallery contains a few pictures from my last stop at Great River Park as a commuter. I’ll be back, but I’m not sure when.
Enjoy your new phase in life. I guess it will be fun the first Monday you wake up and don’t have to join the daily commute :-)

Thanks! That is going to be something I will enjoy. In over 40 years of work and school, I rarely had an easy commute.

Thanks Roberta. Monday, that river scene will be a little brighter, but I won’t be there to see it. I do have a few pictures, though ;-)

Knowing Hartford, I can’t really believe commuting there. But congratulations on your retirement! I’m sure Maddie is looking forward to longer walks…

Thanks! Maddie is adjusting to having me home in the morning. She’s used to going back to bed after I leave. I’m hoping she adapts – I wouldn’t want to be voted off the island.

Happy first day of no alarm, no commute, no phone calls, no meetings, and no quick lunches. DD will probably call though to see if you’re okay. :-) Relax and enjoy this first day because after this you’ll probably start filling them all up with other activities. :-)

Thanks Judy. Looking ahead, at least in the short term, I have a lot to do. I’ll be picking up my snow blower from the dealer today, after its seasonal tune-up. The leaf dump is open and we’re wrapping up projects and getting ready for winter – a process you know well.

You’ll be busy, but you can now stop whenever you want for a nice cup of coffee with the Editor or a walk with Maddie. :-)

Happy retirement, Dan! First day to do whatever you want without thinking about work. WooHoo! Thank YOU for being a supportive blogging friend to all of us here and for understanding the importance of fur babies, beer and football. ;-)
Have a lovely Wednesday and rest of your week.

Thanks Mary. It’s a little daunting right now (especially that pile of stuff I tossed in the garage last night) but I am looking forward to it.

I bet it’s extremely daunting having to type comments in your pajamas, coffee in hand, instead of in work clothes. Or are you up this early because Maddie girl insists on early morning walks? Relax, enjoy and let the pile of stuff in the garage sit another day.

Haha – I am a morning person, Mary. I am up by 6:00-6:10 even on weekends (and I get dressed). Maddie is actually coming in with me and sleeping on the bed while I work at a small desk. There is coffee though – absolutely coffee.

Congratulations on your well-earned retirement Dan. The first few days will be fantastic…no meetings….no deadlines to meet…..not being tied to a clock. Then you may have a few days where you’ll feel like a fish out of water. And then everything will just fall into place and you will LOVE this next phase of your life. Enjoy every minute of it.
The 3 M’s will settle down into your new routine and are going to be thrilled to have Dad around so much. The Editor? Maybe not so much!! 😜
Those “thank you’s” will keep you very busy for awhile. What a nice way to transition from your working years into your retirement years by thanking those who helped you along the way to get to today. You are a class act!

Apparently not. I think it had something to do with some management software being removed removed from my phone by my employer – other weird things have happened.

Thanks John. You might be my retirement hero. I do not see a disaster in the making. I will miss the people, but not the commute or the task list. I might have a chance to finish a couple of projects as a consultant, and I’m OK with that. I’d be OK if they said “on second thought, we don’t need that,” too.

Thanks Teagan. A couple of those people were there when I started 31 years ago. Several others started within the year after I did. It’s hard not to get close in a small shop with that kind of longevity – we’ve all been through a lot. But yes, now I can focus on the next phase.

Congratulations Dan! I realised with a shock the other day that it’s four years since I “retired”. I’ve enjoyed every minute. It’s been everything I hoped for and more – a chance to focus on the things that are important to me, to do life my way, in my own time. I hope for all that for you, too.

I was ‘suddenly’ retired when I started getting sick in 2009. We take longevity for granted, but masses of people living past 65 is a fairly recent thing.

Congratulations, Dan, on your well-deserved retirement. My last day of full-time government employment was a Halloween Day. I thought of doing my out-processing in costume. Of course, that was followed by working as a part-time contractor for another seven plus years, a familiar pattern here in the Washington D.C. area–I suspect that retirement will be more real for you.

Sorry for being absent the last 2 weeks, Dan. I can’t remember when I was on the internet, or when off. The electrical dep. played this game of giving us a notice in the morning, tonight your power will come on. And then in the afternoon, another notice, that it would be postponed. So I missed all kinds of common blog links this way:(
That’s a great way to start retirement to say “thank you!” I remember I walked around for the first three weeks, excited, that for the first time in my life, I would be paid, without having to work for it:):)

Yep. Days are getting shorter and we move the clocks around. It’s good to reflect on the positive stuff as I step away. It wasn’t all peaches and cream, but there was more than enough good to be grateful.

Congrats on your retirement!! It took me awhile to adjust. Little things would make me pause, such as the first Christmas season…it seemed so weird to be out shopping with my wife for Christmas gifts during the week day. I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that there were so many people out and about!! My best to you!!
