What Else Can I say? – #1LinerWeds

Yesterday was a very long day – my last day in the office. People have been asking me about my future plans, but lately the question has been: “What’s the first thing you’re going to do?” My answer:

“I’m going to thank a lot of people.”

This post is part of Linda G. Hill’s fun weekly series One-Liner Wednesday. If you have a one-liner, I’d encourage you to join in on the fun. You can follow this link to participate and to see the one-liners from the other participants.

The gallery contains a few pictures from my last stop at Great River Park as a commuter. I’ll be back, but I’m not sure when.

  1. Happy retirement, Dan! First day to do whatever you want without thinking about work. WooHoo! Thank YOU for being a supportive blogging friend to all of us here and for understanding the importance of fur babies, beer and football. ;-)

Have a lovely Wednesday and rest of your week.

      • I bet it’s extremely daunting having to type comments in your pajamas, coffee in hand, instead of in work clothes. Or are you up this early because Maddie girl insists on early morning walks? Relax, enjoy and let the pile of stuff in the garage sit another day.

        • Haha – I am a morning person, Mary. I am up by 6:00-6:10 even on weekends (and I get dressed). Maddie is actually coming in with me and sleeping on the bed while I work at a small desk. There is coffee though – absolutely coffee.

  2. Congratulations, Dan! Today is the first day of the rest of your yada yada yada…you know. I hope this next phase brings you all the exciting and peaceful and everything in between. :)

  3. Congratulations on your well-earned retirement Dan. The first few days will be fantastic…no meetings….no deadlines to meet…..not being tied to a clock. Then you may have a few days where you’ll feel like a fish out of water. And then everything will just fall into place and you will LOVE this next phase of your life. Enjoy every minute of it.

The 3 M’s will settle down into your new routine and are going to be thrilled to have Dad around so much. The Editor? Maybe not so much!! 😜

Those “thank you’s” will keep you very busy for awhile. What a nice way to transition from your working years into your retirement years by thanking those who helped you along the way to get to today. You are a class act!

    • Thanks Ginger. You guys have helped me, too. This community has been a wonderful place to visit. I am hoping everyone around here adjusts to my being here 24/7.

People have been so nice, so supportive as I came up to this, I can’t thank them enough. It’s supposed to rain tomorrow, so that should be a good task.

  4. Congratulations to you, Dan! I am sure there are a whole lotta people at your office who thank you for your years of service and dedication. Enjoy your new life–I’ve not heard a bad thing about retirement from anyone.

  5. Good luck Dan. And remember when you get to that point when you are looking for your marbles they might just be under your give a damn. And then stop and remember that you are retired and you have all day or all week to find find them. They are both around here somewhere.

    • Thanks John. You might be my retirement hero. I do not see a disaster in the making. I will miss the people, but not the commute or the task list. I might have a chance to finish a couple of projects as a consultant, and I’m OK with that. I’d be OK if they said “on second thought, we don’t need that,” too.

  6. Enjoy your retirement! Just think. Now you have time to renovate your house. Or not! Whatever you decide to do, I believe you’re going to love this new phase of your life. There will be adjustments, but you can make it work by doing the things you love.

    • Thanks Deborah. It is bittersweet, but those people aren’t going anywhere and neither am I. I’ll have plenty of opportunities to stay in touch. I am looking forward to this new phase.

    • Thanks Teagan. A couple of those people were there when I started 31 years ago. Several others started within the year after I did. It’s hard not to get close in a small shop with that kind of longevity – we’ve all been through a lot. But yes, now I can focus on the next phase.

  7. Congratulations Dan! I realised with a shock the other day that it’s four years since I “retired”. I’ve enjoyed every minute. It’s been everything I hoped for and more – a chance to focus on the things that are important to me, to do life my way, in my own time. I hope for all that for you, too.

    • Thanks John. Maybe I have time to figure out why WordPress ate about 25 comments and likes (by me on this post). I’ve been here before, liked and responded to this comment. Accck,

  8. Congrats Dan. I’m sure it’s going to take a while to settle into your new routine but I can assure you that a routine not involving a daily commute has its advantages.
    Cheers my friend :-D

    • Thanks Norm. I am happy to not have that commute. I am thrilled to not have any travel booked for this winter. Normally, by this point, I’d have three trips scheduled. I’m going to like sitting here and watching it snow.

  9. Congratulations you made it through the last day!!!! Enjoy the transitional time, take it easy on yourself and enjoy this next phase in life. I can’t wait to see what you learn about it and what you do next. xx

  10. Congratulations, Dan, on your well-deserved retirement. My last day of full-time government employment was a Halloween Day. I thought of doing my out-processing in costume. Of course, that was followed by working as a part-time contractor for another seven plus years, a familiar pattern here in the Washington D.C. area–I suspect that retirement will be more real for you.

    • Ha ha – Thanks Mike – My last official day is today, although I’m using the last of my vacation days. I will have a small consulting role in 2020, but it probably won’t extend beyond that.

  11. Sorry for being absent the last 2 weeks, Dan. I can’t remember when I was on the internet, or when off. The electrical dep. played this game of giving us a notice in the morning, tonight your power will come on. And then in the afternoon, another notice, that it would be postponed. So I missed all kinds of common blog links this way:(

That’s a great way to start retirement to say “thank you!” I remember I walked around for the first three weeks, excited, that for the first time in my life, I would be paid, without having to work for it:):)

    • Thanks. I’m sorry about the power issues. Hopefully you’re not in any danger from the fires. It’s hard to know where people are in CA in relation to the fires.

I am looking forward to this retirement thing.

      • Haha, if I am complaining, I am not in danger:) The closest fire is by Fresno, three hours away.

Am happy retirement is a good thing for you (you are a person who will always find something to do, or fill up your time) !

  12. Big Congratulations to you on your retirement! What an exciting time! I just love that you’ll end one chapter and start another in GRATITUDE! Fills my heart with gladness :)
It was dark in the carline this morning, and after this weekend, I’ll reckon it’ll be dark before dinner instead.

    • Yep. Days are getting shorter and we move the clocks around. It’s good to reflect on the positive stuff as I step away. It wasn’t all peaches and cream, but there was more than enough good to be grateful.

  13. Congrats on your retirement!! It took me awhile to adjust. Little things would make me pause, such as the first Christmas season…it seemed so weird to be out shopping with my wife for Christmas gifts during the week day. I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that there were so many people out and about!! My best to you!!
