It’s Saturday, and it has been a busy week, so David and I are treating ourselves to a couple rounds of our favorite beverages and maybe even some food. While we avoid the news (which is already trending dangerously close to political campaigns) we’ll solve the lesser-known problems in the world, including Linda G. Hill’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt.

“Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is ‘left alone.’ Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!”

Now, if we were having a beer, I’d be in a very good mood.

“Dan, you look like you just won a million bucks.”

“I feel pretty good, David, but I didn’t win big money, and it’s still your week to buy.”

“That’s fine. If you won big money, you’d probably stop hanging out here, and I’d be left alone.”

“Well, thanks, David.”

“Oh, I didn’t mean that the way it sounded, Cheryl.”

“I know, but I also know that Dan would never stop coming here. Can I get you guys your usual?”

“Yes, John Howell’s Bourbon for me, and pour the happy man a Modelo on me.”

“Happy Man and Cherry Man. Coming right up.”

“Cherry Man? I don’t understand.”

“Our supplier was out of cherries. I had to pick some up at the grocery store on my way in.”

“You did that for me, Cheryl. That’s so nice.”

“I told you a long time ago, David. Cheryl is the best bartender ever.”

“I heard that, Dan – thanks!”

“So, what has you in such a good mood, Dan?”

“The Thursday Doors Writing Challenge. It was so successful this year. I couldn’t be happier.”

“I saw you added a poem yesterday. A bit of whimsey to offset some of the dark and serious stories you wrote.”

“I think only one story was dark.”

“Yeah, and since I loved the name ‘Billy Two Sticks’ it didn’t matter. But what made you go with runaway rabbits?”

“That door was nagging me.”

“I don’t think those markings are really Morse Code, Dan. Here’s your beer, and David, here’s your bourbon and your cherries.”

“Oh, my goodness, they are Cherry Man cherries. That’s funny.”

“I know it wasn’t Morse Code, Cheryl, but I didn’t want that door to be left alone.”

“What do you mean?”

“Every other person that contributed one or more door photos had at least one used as inspiration.”

“And you wanted all of them to be used?”

“I did. When I saw the code in those markings, I was going to work on another short story, but there wasn’t time.”

“OK, that makes sense.”

“Cheers, Dan. I do have to admit to chuckling a bit seeing the rabbit flying out of a cannon. Only a mother could paint a story like that.”

“I’m glad I could make you laugh, David.”

“I think I’ve read everything contributed to the writing challenge. You attracted a great group of poets and writers.”

“Don’t forget the photographers who offered the doors.”

“That’s true. Some did double duty, yourself included.”

“That speaks to the community, David. Some people take excellent photos. Some are very good writers and poets, and some are both.”

“I guess you’re pretty lucky.”

“I’d say so.”

“In the words of Mitchell Serling, how ‘bout I buy you another beer and a burger.”

“That sounds good to me!”

  1. It’s definitely bunny season. I’m loving the bounty of photos. That Korean dogwood is a stunner…

    1. I don’t want to make you feel bad, but they are everywhere. I need to organize these so I have un-shared bunny photos to post in January. That Korean Dogwood seemed to have a growth spurt this year.

  2. I like the photo of the dogwood and the plane — a nice capture of perspective there. I was glad to read of your celebration at the bar. A lift of adult beverages to celebrate TDWC is fitting!

    1. Thanks Maureen. I will continue to promote the writing challenge, off and on for a few weeks. So many people put so much effort into its success, I’d like every story to be read and every photo to be seen.

  5. Thanks again, Dan, for running the Thursday Door Writing Challenge. It gave me reason to take time and write rather than the many other things that take up time.

Your photo of the baby bunnies following momma: It is that time of year again, except in my neighborhood we have the momma geese and their babies holding up traffic on a busy road while they waddle their broods across. Never in a hurry. I can never get a good photo, but it’s hilarious!

The cherries reminded me that I need to pack a few adult refreshment items for vacation, at night when there is a need to toast a good ride and quench our thirst. Have a wonderful Saturday!

    1. I’ve waited behind geese, and I’ve been pecked on the pedals for not waiting long enough when the babies were crossing a bike trail.

I’m glad you could join us again for the TDWC – I loved the conversation you posted today.

Make sure you pack some proper rewards for a ride well done. I hope you have wonderful weather and good rides.

The conversation at the bar today was light and cheery. Nice way to start Saturday. Bunnies abound here too. It’s fun watching them play together. Snoopy seems to have everything in order. Your neighbor’s cat needs a bit of exercise, don’cha think? 🤗

The Korean Dogwood and Rhododendron look incredible.

And, of course, Old Glory, shining brightly against the backdrop of dark tree leaves, is a stunner!

Wishing you a wonderful weekend Dan.

  10. I think I have dogwood envy. Cherry Man looks a little on the demented side. I wonder how he’d do as a superhero.

We have two of these dogwoods, and they seem to have enjoyed a growth spurt this year.

  11. That friendly cat…is rather large, isn’t he? Cute but mighty large.
Isn’t it weird how you can look quickly at a word, mispronounce it, and that mispronunciation sticks with you forever? I always thought his name was Rod STerling. Imagine my shock when a couple months ago, I noticed you had written his name as Rod Serling–no T! You know I had to Google that! 😆 And then Maraschino cherries. From the time I could pronounce it, I always said Marschiano cherries. It is still a struggle for me to say it right. 🙄 Have a great weekend, Dan.

    1. That cat is “healthy” Lois. I think the people who wrote spellcheckers also mispronounce Rod’s name. It never fails but to try to correct my spelling, and it always offers to insert a T. I kinda like the idea of Marschiano cherries :-) Have a great weekend.

  12. I missed the writing challenge this year, but congratulations to everyone who contributed photos or writing! We have very few flowers blooming now. This was a strange spring. Fewer blooms, and the season flew by. We will soon be well into the heat of summer. This morning I am thankful it is cool enough to have the doors open for a while.

The House Sparrow with all the nesting material is awesome, and your Rhodies are gorgeous.
Smokey holding his peanut is so, so cute!!

    1. When I saw that brand of cherries, I knew it was the right one for David. Snoopy fills that birdhouse every year. It was designed for Bluebirds, who we were told like deep houses. There’s actually hardware cloth on the inside to help the chicks climb up to the door. Snoopy just packs it full to just below the opening. That’s a lot of stuff to move with your mouth.

This particular Smokey loves to eat on the steps. We need more brooms.

      1. I think it’s so cool that she returns to your birdhouse year after year.

LOL! Do the peanut shells make good mulch?

        Liked by 1 person

        1. The peanut shells do make good mulch, but ironically, the rabbits actually eat them, so we never have a lot of them in the yard.

Kudos on your stories (and poem-story). The writing challenge really was a big success! I enjoyed participating and providing images. Almost all of the photos drew me. It would have been nice to write a story for each one. Anyhow, you did a lot more work for the challenge than you let on, with maintaining all the links, and visiting posts in support. Thank you.

    1. Thanks so much for your support of the challenge, Teagan. It is a lot of work, but it’s so much fun. I love trying to dream up stories for the doors, and seeing what everyone comes up with. It just shows how amazingly creative this community is. I am publishing a few statistics tomorrow (‘cuz I’m a geek) but the numbers tell a very nice story.

I hope you can relax this weekend. You did quite a bit of writing this week.

  24. Yay – congratulations on the Thursday door writing challenge – that’s so wonderful that every door was able to be used in a story or more. It looks like you’ve gotten enough rain in between heat waves. 96 and breezy…ah, I could almost feel the breeze looking at the flag photo. The stunning pops of color and flowering buds made me smile. I hope the heat isn’t preventing you from enjoying the summer. Stay cool!!
