Yesterday, well, Saturday through yesterday, commemorates the Battle of Midway, widely thought to be the turning point in the war in the Pacific in World War II. Yesterday was also the anniversary of D-Day, the invasion of France. You’d think they could have taken pity on future bloggers and had these battles on different days, but…

I’m rereading “Miracle at Midway” by Gordon Prange—my favorite book on the battle, and I watched “Midway” the 1976 version which I think is far superior to the 2019 remake. I also watched “The Longest Day” but I digress.

Anyway, there’s a line in “Midway” that I absolutely love. The line is uttered by Commander Joseph Rochefort, the cryptographer who was played by Hal Holbrook. The last line in the exchange from the script below is my one-liner:

Captain Garth : How much can you decipher?
Commander Rochefort : Fifteen percent.
Captain Garth : Really  decipher?
Commander Rochefort : Ten percent.
Captain Garth : Ten percent? That’s one word in ten, Joe! You’re guessing!
Commander Rochefort : [slightly hurt]  We like to call it “analysis.”

Script – Midway 1976

I thought of that line hundreds of times during my systems development career. I even said it out loud a few times—once to the distaste of my boss who wanted to know if I was trying to be funny.

Thinking about things, imagining what might be, guessing that something could be done and scenario after scenario that began with “if this happened and we could…” were essential in my line of work. I always love that scene in the movie.

OK, what about that “news” thing?

In September, I will be releasing the fourth and final book in the Dreamer’s Alliance Series. Between now and then, I’m going to be trying things to promote the series. I have to tell you; I stink at this. I don’t like bothering people with my attempts at self-promotion, especially since a lot of you already own the books. OK, that’s my problem.

Today, the talented author Gwen Plano is featuring me on her blog. In conjunction with that, “Knuckleheads” the backstory of the series is on sale at Amazon for $0.99. This is one of Amazon’s “countdown” sales, so it’s $0.99 today (US & UK). In a couple days it will go up to $1.99, then $2.99 and back to $3.99 in seven days. I hope you can skip over and check out Gwen’s post. I deeply appreciate her support.

This post is part of Linda G. Hill’s fun weekly series One-Liner Wednesday. If you have a one-liner, and would like to join in on the fun, you can follow this link to participate and to see the one-liners from the other participants.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  1. Good morning Dan that’s an interesting line and one no doubt my three sons use a lot in their jobs too!
As always we owe a lot to those brave men who stood up for us.
I am glad to hear you are promoting the series of the Dreamers Alience and I look forward to your visit here in August! I am popping over to Gwen’s place now.
Those photos Dan , they are wonderful all of them 💜💜

    1. Thanks Willow. I think the techies in the world understand that line as much more than a comic response. Thanks for the support you’ve given, and the upcoming visit. Gwen was so nice to let me visit and talk about this series. I’m glad you like the photos, too. I hope you have a great day.

    2. Thanks Judy. I was happy to get those photos of the sun, but not happy for the reason. Are you dealing with this smoke, too? The next book is being reviewed by beta readers and a proofreader. Unless I’ve made some big mistakes, it should be ready to launch in September.

      1. The central and western part of the state is getting hit with the smoke pretty hard. So far, here on the seacoast, it’s not making much of a presence. We have an appointment south and west of here tomorrow so we’ll probably be exposed to it then. Stay safe.

    1. MiMi loves to sit and watch. I like it when she’s still there as I start my walk, but it’s usually because she’s watching birds or squirrels. It’s hard to get them together.

  6. And don’t forget, Dan, Midway overshadowed the Battle of the Aleutian Islands.

Great one-liner and appropriate for many situations. We too watch those movies every year.

Love the sun photos. The odd colored haze isn’t as bad today, at least not yet. MiMi and Samantha are so cute together and the baby squirrel peeking out of the tree is adorable.

Old Glory looking proud and dignified. She sure has seen a lot of war in her time.

Congratulations on your next publication. You’re on your way to being a rock star in the literary world!

    1. Thanks Ginger. I love those movies, and Midway really came up short in Hollywood compared to D-Day. I worked with a man in the late 70s who was a retired Army cryptographer. I carpooled with him for a while, and the stories he told about their working conditions made summer camp sound like a day at the Ritz.

Today’s sky is clearer. It’s not often I can point my camera at the sun and zoom in. Made me feel like I was back in Pittsburgh in the 60s ;-)

I’m not sure about rock star, but I am trying to get the word our earlier this time. It’s just so hard.

I hope you have a good week and better air to breath.

  8. Those pictures of the sun are appalling. Great photos, but scary stuff. As for self-promotion, that is very hard. I think every time a writer puts his/her writing “out there,” it’s a personal risk. Self-promotion adds to that risk. I also think that many of us were not raised to self-promote; it just wasn’t done. But it’s the path to the goal, yes? Writing is risky business.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. “Not raised to self-promote…” is an understatement. My father was the original “this is not about you” champion. I appreciate the opportunity to be able to publish books I want to write, but selling them is a different story. Some people are relentless with marketing; I can’t do that. really feel like I’m bothering people. But, as you say, it’s the path to the goal. The one thing I can say is that I am very happy to read comments and reviews where people say they liked my books.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. It means a lot to a writer to be read! And you’re totally correct that it’s one thing to write and another thing to market. It’s all about best guesses, yes?

  9. The photo of MiMi watching Samantha is so cute! It is hard to get photos like this, so what a gem it is.
Watching the news last night, I was thinking about you getting all that smoke from Canada. It’s down to South Carolina now…wonder how much longer before it hits Florida.
Look at you go with your writing! I am so impressed, Dan.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks Lois. Most of the time, MiMi is in the door when I’m getting ready to go for my walk, but gone when I get to the sidewalk. The birds scatter when I go out, and only some of the squirrels know it’s safe to stay on the porch. This one knew enough to beg for a peanut. I hop the smoke blows into the Atlantic before getting to you. It’s gross out there. I’m sure it’s worse in Canada, but this is awful. As for the writing, I enjoy the research and writing, but I hate marketing.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Dan, your marketing is so very subtle, it doesn’t even feel like you’re trying to get your books out there. You do a great job. And I just read your interview on Gwen’s blog–great questions, great responses.

I think every high school kid should know the date of D-Day, and Pearl Harbor. Sadly, they don’t even know the dates of our own Civil War.

  25. We do have the same mindset regarding our furry friends Dan … I similarly give them wide berth to finish their breakfast. Why not be accommodating? As to geese and their goslings, no use raising their hackles on a peaceful walk, so I always give them the right of way. The sun poking through a dark sky has been pretty spectacular to see this past week.
