If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you might remember a series of posts I used to run when I was commuting to work. And you might recognize the sign to the right. Well, since the fall of 2019, two things happened. 1) I drive a lot less because I retired, and 2) Drivers around here have gotten a lot worse since the pandemic.

Like me, you may remember learning that you can proceed through an intersection if you have a green light. If the light turns yellow, you can proceed with caution, if you can clear the intersection before the light turns red. If the light is red, you stop.

Today’s version seems to be. If the light is yellow, decide if you’re going through the intersection and adjust your speed (up or down) accordingly. If the light is red, ignore it, if you decided to proceed when the light turned yellow. If the light is green, be careful. Thus my first one-liner:

The most dangerous part of your driving adventure is when you’re approaching an intersection where your light just turned green.

The image below is of an on-ramp where I enter the highway. It’s controlled by a light. I was the second of three cars approaching the light as the left-arrow appeared for us to turn onto the ramp. As the first car approached the intersection, a large truck flew off the ramp and turned left.

Although we (yellow) had a green light, the truck never even slowed

When I told this story to my brother and mentioned that I’d likely use it for a one-liner Wednesday post. He had a caveat:

“If you’re going to post that under your ‘Bat Sh*t Crazy Drivers’ theme, you need to apologize to bats.”

This post is part of Linda G. Hill’s fun weekly series One-Liner Wednesday. If you have a one-liner, and would like to join in on the fun, you can follow this link to participate and to see the one-liners from the other participants.

Note: Today begins a week of light blogging (and blog reading) for me. I will have a post on Saturday that will include an announcement of an upcoming special guest, and I’ll try to share some photos for Cee’s Fun Foto challenge on Monday. Otherwise, I may be absent. I hope you all have a great week. I will have a placeholder post for Thursday Doors – just in case someone wants to post.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  1. Good morning Dan and of course there’s never any cameras or police about when you need them. Be careful out there.
Lovely photos as always the wild life has you right where they want you! 💜

    1. It’s a rare event to see one of these drivers get snagged by the police. The wildlife around here have us well trained.

      1. It’s a shame about the police… It’s the same here!
As for the wild life we are trained to their high standards too!

  2. Arizona has some of the worst drivers I’ve ever seen so I could tell lots of stories. Recently, as the light turned red, the truck in front of me, a rather large truck, went to finish his left turn, a car came flying across the intersection just missing getting hit by the truck. I just sat there, shaking my head, relieved that there hadn’t been a terrible accident.

Your nature photos were nice contrast to the story about the truck. Lol. Watching birds take a bath is just so much fun.

    1. Sorry to hear that you have drivers like that, too. I guess they’re everywhere. It’s scary when you see an accident or even a close call.

  4. Good point about the need to apologize to bats. Intersections require caution even when one has a green light.

    1. It’s so true, Frank. Driving defensively is becoming much more important.

  5. Poor bats, I’m sure they’re better drivers than most people on the highway.
I think that’s a hairy woodpecker, the downy is smaller.
Beautiful bunny shots… but I may be biased.

    1. Thanks for the info on the woodpecker. Bats are better drivers, and they’re blind! The bunnies are everywhere, so I figure including more than one is OK.

  6. Same here. I was third in line stopped for a red light at a four-way intersection. The car behind me pulled around, passed us, and made a left hand turn into the intersection. I couldn’t believe it, but it seems like not recognizing a red light is becoming more of a thing. The police departments here are all understaffed so we hardly see them on the roads anymore. Dangerous out there.

    1. Wow – I doubt bats want to be associated with that guy. That’s crazy. CT passed legislation to allow red light cameras. Accidents and pedestrian deaths are up for the 4th year in a row. I hope it makes a difference.

Yeah, the bats are getting a bum rap for the crazy drivers. I don’t know what people are thinking when they get behind the wheel of their cars, but they sure aren’t thinking about safe driving! Police? Fahgeddaboutit! They’re nowhere to be found.

I think Miss Kitty can’t scowl because she’s too busy squinting in the sun!

Sweet MiMi really takes her job as security guard seriously, doesn’t she! 🤗

That’s a really nice picture of Memorial Park and Old Glory.

Enjoy your “light” week. Have fun watching the Robins bathe. They do put on quite a show for us mere mortals.

    1. I guess I have to change my sign to a different type of crazy, or include the apology to bats. It’s getting more and more dangerous on the roads.

I think you’re right about the cat. She’s famous for giving me the stink eye.

MiMi has been wanting to look out more and more lately. Not sure why. She never used to care, but that might be because her sister was there. I think MiMi is still getting used to being the only pet. She seems to like it.

I hope you have a great week, Ginger. Stay safe.

    1. I agree, Staci, I think I need to include that apology to the bats. Connecticut has recently passed a law to allow red light cameras that can generate trinkets. They kept trying to avoid taking this step, but vehicle and pedestrian deaths are up for the 4th year in a row. Stay safe.

  14. The way some drivers treat traffic lights the use of cameras at intersections makes sense. Great pictures. There are a few other short yellow daylilies and this one is more than likely Stella de Oro. Have a good week !

    1. Thanks for the daylily info. I figured you would know. I’m actually looking forward to the cameras. I’ve settled down enough, that I don’t think I’m at risk of getting an e-ticket.

  15. People and traffic lights…where are the cops when you need them?! Dan, that beautiful cat is not scowling. He is merely unsmiling. Is this Theo’s cousin? MiMi on duty is so cute. Two of mine like to sit on the windowsill and when they start making that ‘chittering’ noise, I know a bird is outside. You know, getting ready to attack the house. 🙄

    Liked by 2 people

    1. MiMi likes to watch, but she’s never in attack mode. I think she’d like to go out and play (but that’s not happening) or perhaps invite Smokey in. That cat is the one I dubbed Theo’s cousin, and he’s always giving me the stink-eye. The cops show up after the accident.

  16. I hope you have a lovely light week, stay off the interstate if you can!
We have mostly jackrabbits here and it’s getting so hot so early that I think they’re hiding somewhere cooler. I’ve begun to walk in the am, the afternoons are unbearable unless you’re at the pool or the beach. Luckily, I’ve got pals coming that pretty much want to beach it every day!

    1. Thanks Kim. I normally walk between 7:00 and 7:30. If it gets hotter, I’ll move that up as far as 6:30 to beat the heat.

  20. Enjoy your break, Dan. I loved those crazy driver stories. Sometimes I think truckers have a thought process that runs like “I’m bigger than everyone so might is right.”

    1. There is that “misery loves company vibe” but I was hoping things would settle down. Connecticut has seen year-over-year increases in vehicle and pedestrian deaths sine 2019. 25. Whenever I’m driving and B is a passenger, he’ll say “Jill, the light is green”. Kind of to hurry me up. And then I say real loud “one Mississippi two Mississippi three Mississippi”. Then I looked both ways before I go. Because I know that invariably some crazy driver is going to run the red light.

  30. I love your book byline. Family sarcasm is a favorite of mine. Way back in 1980 in Louisiana my first husband and I were approaching an intersection where the light just changed. It was a fairly large one, albeit within what used to be a major neighborhood. These roads were major thoroughfares. Well he just zipped on through and when I looked to my right I saw a car headed right fro my door. I was near 9 mos pregnant and screamed at my husband who slammed the brakes on our little Honda CVCC and we slid to a halt and the guy just missed us. The moral of this story seems to be that even though the South seems to be about 50 years behind the rest of the country, they were ahead of the game in stupid drivers. 😳

  31. Hi Dan, the driving where you are sounds as bad as the driving is here. WE have been getting periods when the electricity is off. This happens up to three times a day for periods of up to four hours. During this time, the traffic lights don’t work and must be treated like a four-way stop. People are just doing whatever they want at these times and the derision of the law has now overflowed into the times when the electricity is on. It is most scary and unpleasant to drive now.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Wow! We don’t lose electricity that often, but people treat 4-way stops like a game of “who can go first” so it’s never a good time to be on the road.

  32. I agree with your assessment on driving in 2023 – people drive and act like it is the Wild Wild West out there, plus we have all the freeway shootings. Last year I believe we had 21 of them. Usually random, sometimes people decide to take out someone and drive away and it is presumed it is a freeway shooter. I went to school and worked in Detroit from 1976 to 2009 and it was not that bad then.

    Liked by 1 person
