During the past seven days, I was visiting my brother in Iowa. After more than forty years of regular—sometimes frequent—travel, this roughly annual trip has become my only air travel. Therefore, it’s my chance to assess the state of air travel.

Others out here travel more often than I do, so I’ll summarize my observations.

  • Air travel is more expensive than it was a year ago
  • Airlines have made the process more self-serve by having passengers check-in their own baggage
  • Airline operations seem to have stabilized considerably over the past three years
  • I think they managed to pack a few more people on the plane
  • The people, at least on Delta, are friendly, polite and professional.

One observation that still holds for me after all these years:

“Despite all the good times—and there were many—the best part of travel is returning home.”

This post is part of Linda G. Hill’s fun weekly series One-Liner Wednesday. If you have a one-liner, and would like to join in on the fun, you can follow this link to participate and to see the one-liners from the other participants.

Note: Tomorrow marks the return of Thursday Doors to its regular schedule. I hope to see you there.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

There’s no place like home. Going through the Denver airport has been a nightmare four of the last five times we’ve traveled. The airport itself is amazing, but we’ve gotten delayed by the weather several times. The latest version was a five-hour layover that stretched into nine when the plane was delayed.

    1. Some airports are better than others, Pete, but none are good for nine hours. I used to fly Southwest to Iowa, but schedules changed to include a four hour layover at Midway. If you’ve ever been, that’s an airport that is not amazing.

  2. Airports are airports especially at 4am! But it’s great to visit family and their moggies!
Definitely the best part is getting home and the greetings from the local livestock are fun 💜💜

  3. Hi Dan, These are interesting observations on travel. I’ve noticed the differences in rules from airport to airport, enough to write an entire post on it.
For me, ever since I moved to Dhaka, the best part of travel is packing to go away :).

    1. My observations are limited, indeed. Two small domestic airports and two large hubs. Still, it’s amazing to see the changes. The process continues to evolve. I hope you find a place you enjoy coming home to.

  5. Hi Dan – four o’clock in the morning – ghastly thought! But I did used to do it … love the various pics – the ups and downs. Our tube line makes us walk miles under half of London (total exaggeration!) – I haven’t been up there recently … nor to an airport – unlikely to visit soon. Cheers Hilary

    1. Hi Hillary. There’s one subway (I like ‘tube’ better) connection in New York City that includes a very long walk underground. It’s only bearable when it’s raining. For me, I like the airports that give you the option to walk. Some require that you use the train/tram. I look at that as one more thing that can go wrong.

  6. Flying is definitely not the joy it used to be. And why do all flights leave at 5:00am? 😠
I was worried there wouldn’t be an Iowa bunny, nice to see they were there to welcome you home.

    1. I choose that early flight from here to Minneapolis because I know the plane will be here. Des Moines and Hartford/Springfield (Bradly) are always dependent on flights arriving on time, so always subject to delays. I saw that bunny on my way in from filling the birdbaths for the last time.

  7. Hope you and your brother had a great visit. It’s been a good while since we’ve flown, and I don’t see any flights in our immediate future. Do you remember when it was quite an exciting experience, you got dressed up to do so, and walked out on the tarmac to board? My, the times have changed as evidenced by the recent arrest at Logan.

    1. I remember going to the airport to watch the planes for observation decks. I’m guessing some younger folks are looking that up in a fact-checker ;-)

We had a great week. I hope to see him again in Pittsburgh, later in the year, but I’ll drive there. I probably won’t fly again until next year.

Another wonderful family get-together under your belt! The last time I flew was in 1986! With all the worries that flying brings to mind, now you also have to worry if you’re flying with some nut job who is determined to cause havoc. No thanks!

Your brothers cat is still so handsome and still has a mind of his own. You’re lucky he didn’t make you sleep on the floor!

Your nieces cats, Fester and Gomez, are beautiful. I love the little patches of white on Gomez’s neck, and hind toes!

Love that Iowa farm and cornfield.

Shame on Smokey for pretending the “lady” didn’t feed him.

Glad you had a good visit and that you’re back home safe and sound.

    1. Thanks Ginger. Sundance (brother’s cat) let’s me know just how much I’m inconveniencing him by taking his chair and his side of the bed. He’s a great cat, and Fester and Gomez are getting friendlier (or less scared). This was the first visit where they both came out at the same time. The white dots on the toes is how I can tell them apart.

Smokey, the robin and the other critters all tried to pull the “we haven’t been fed/watered all week” drill. I know better

Driving from Minneapolis to Ames is such an amazing ride. Hundred and hundreds of acres of corn and soybeans. I never get used to seeing so much land planted.

Flying was a little less stressful. I missed the story of the guy in Boston (which was probably good), so I wasn’t too worried. My biggest worry is who’s going to be sitting next to me. All flights, nice quiet people, so I was happy.

  9. What was the old saying — getting there is half the fun? I’m not so sure about that. However, with family on the other end of the trip, it’s different. That field of corn is beautiful! By the way, that odd sound you heard early yesterday afternoon was me getting to the line “Mom told us to pay our respects, not help dig the hole.” I think that’s called comic relief. Laughed out loud at that one. Great reading!

    1. Thanks Maureen. Flying has gone from a wonderful ride to another form of public transportation. I wish I could take a train, but getting there is important. I leave here early, and with the time difference, we start our day in Minneapolis at 8:00 a.m. Of course we’ve both been up since before the crack of dawn, but we have a full day to enjoy.

I’m so glad to hear that you’re enjoying the book. Those little bits of family snark were important for me to add.

  11. What I don’t understand is if you’re doing most of the work, why the heck do they want you there so stinking early? I feel the same about doing the checkers job at Walmart. Shouldn’t I be getting a tip for having to bag my own? 🤣😂

    1. On my first flight, after I did my work, I still had to check in with a human because they had changed planes and my seat had been changed. Despite several announcements from the gate attendant, when it was time to board, about 50 people had to go up to the counter to get their correct seat assignment. It might be why they want us there early, but it didn’t help.

  13. Sounds like your flights were pleasant. Last time I flew, the older woman next to me was astounded when I told her you could purchase those Biscoff cookies at the store. She was turning around to thank me as the flight attendants were wheeling her off the plane. I hope she was able to buy some.
Your brother’s cats are so cute! Sundance looks a lot like Preston, doesn’t he? Fester and Gomez? I love it!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I had been buying those cookies for years. Maddie loved them, and always got the last bite. They are hard for me to eat at home. I would but them on the plate where my toast had been. If they sucked up some butter, she was in heaven.

Sundance does look like Preston, but quite a bit heavier.

  14. Like you, Dan, I used to fly a lot and now only occasionally. Air travel is much more miserable than it used to be — more-crowded planes, smaller seats, passengers have to do more themselves, various add-on fees, etc. (You of course mentioned some of those things.) Flying is now a necessary evil. :-)

    1. You’re right, Dave. It’s just public transportation these days. Whenever I can take a train, I do. One of the places I traveled to often was Washington, D.C. and I always took the train. Factoring in the time at the airport, the plane was only an hour or two faster, but the train ride was so much nicer.

    1. I will share some food from Iowa pictures, John, but on several occasions I was too busy eating. In one case, it was bacon-cheddar brats. You’ll have to use your imagination. DTW is still a big long slog, now spread over three terminals. Arriving at B-20 and departing from A-61 had me wasting no time on a 47-minute layover. Fortunately, my plane to Hartford was 20 minutes late, or I would have been in trouble.

      1. I guess that’s why they have the tram.

        Liked by 1 person

        1. In my case, I’m not sure the tram would have helped. The next stop was well beyond my gate, so I’d be walking to get the tram and then walking back to my gate. The moving sidewalks seem to be faster, as long as people give you the lane to walk in.

    1. I really wish I could travel that way :-)

Airports are great places to get wide open views of the sunrise and sunset. Although, if you don’t have a plane or some big equipment, the view is a bit boring.

The honeysuckle is in full bloom today. You can smell it from quite a distance.

You’re always welcome at Thursday Doors. I hope you can make it.

    1. It’s tough, John, but I know that plane will be there in the morning, and it gets me to Minneapolis early enough that my brother and I have an entire day, albeit we’ve both been up too long at the end of it. Mid-day flights out of BDL are dicey, especially if there’s a connection involved. It doesn’t take much of a delay to throw those schedules into chaos.

    1. 2021 and 2022 were not great trips. I still got there and back, but everything was complicated. This was as good a flight as I remember, albeit with me doing more of the work. 1. Thanks Teagan. I hope my next use of mass transportation is a train to NYC. My next trip will be driving to Pittsburgh. Iowa is too far to drive, and thee are too many connections to rely on AMTRAK. Maybe that will improve t the point that I could take a train. I think that would be fun. Don’t feel bad about the duh-grin. I remembered Gomez but I had Fester confused with Marshal Dillon’s deputy.

  25. I always liked Midway because it was small enough to navigate easily and preferred it to O’Hare. But I haven’t flown for a number of years now. Probably the first time I’ll fly again is whenever I head to Europe to stay with my s-i-l but with Putin doing his war thing, I don’t know how soon that will be.

Anyway, glad you had a good time and I’m enjoying the smell of the honeysuckle. :-) I always say it’s a blessing to go somewhere you enjoy and a blessing to have a place you like coming home to.
