Welcome to Thursday Doors! This is a weekly challenge for people who love doors and architecture to come together to admire and share their favorite door photos, drawings, or other images or stories from around the world. If you’d like to join us, simply create your own Thursday Doors post each (or any) week and then share a link to your post in the comments below, anytime between 12:01 am Thursday morning and Saturday noon (North American eastern time). If you like, you can add our badge to your post.

I only went on one doorscursion while visiting my brother, but it wasn’t in Iowa, and I’m not sharing those photos today. However, while in Iowa I took pictures of a number of interesting doors, along with a few other interesting items. As I often remind people, although it’s Thursday Doors, we can share other photos.

I’ve been going to Iowa for many years, but there are two things I’ve never experienced. One is the Iowa State Fair, and although I’d like to gnaw on a turkey leg or try some deep-fried butter, I don’t really want to experience the heat of Iowa in August and I would also like to avoid the grandstanding politicians.

The second event I have (make that had) never been able to experience is “Beer Club.” Beer club was started about 20 years ago when two guys got together (while their wives were at a book club) and “grilled some steaks and drank some beer.” Over time, more and more guys were invited. I think my brother was the 4th or 5th person to join. I’ve been regaled with stories, jokes and comments, under the heading of, “I heard this at Beer Club.” But I’ve never been there during the right week—until this year.

The day I arrived, a day that started at 3:00 am, we conducted the doorscursion I alluded to above, had breakfast in Minneapolis and drove three hours back to my brother’s house in Iowa. After getting settled and arguing with his cat, Sundance about which side of the bed would be mine, we headed out for Beer Club.

Beer Club meets in a variety of places. Sometimes, it meets at someone’s house. During Covid, it met in a city park, so social distancing could be enforced. It meets at restaurants, bars and breweries. This time, we drove to Polk, IA and gathered at Fenders, a brew pub.

I enjoyed a flight of interesting sounding beers, including—to some of your surprise—a dark ale. It was the darkest thing on the menu, and I knew, if I didn’t like it, my brother would drink it for me. Now, if that last sentence didn’t get Mary’s attention, I must tell her that the featured door in the gallery is from the Ladies Room of this pub. A pub I am sure she would like to visit, except for the dearth of Stouts and Porters. Mary is also known as Bikerchick, although she’s traded her motorcycle for a self-propelled set of two wheels.

I will add that previous experience has taught me that taking a photo of a Ladies Room door is not for the faint of heart. I captured one such door in Daytona, Florida (while visiting Cheryl and her husband) and as I was taking the picture, a woman exited the room.

Without further droning on by yours truly, I’ll let you investigate the gallery. I hope you will have some time to visit the other participants, whose links and pingbacks are listed in the comments.

My kind of place. If I’m ever in Iowa, I’ll look it up. I wouldn’t mind going to either Beer Club or Book Club.

  3. It’s funny, I hear Iowa and I think politicians. And state fair. Maybe one of these days will get me there. I like the idea of a “beer club”. I must check out the difference between a stout and a dark beer. Love the bathroom doors, someone put some thought into that. Thanks for taking us along on your beer-scursion.

    1. I don’t know the difference, but the beer club members who prefer dark beer weren’t overly impressed with a dark ale. I also drink dark lagers, but I gather those aren’t considered “dark” beers. Maybe Mary can explain when she gets here. Iowa is already thick with politicians. It will get much worse before January. I do hope to get to the fair at some point… maybe 2025.

    1. Thanks Jean. The cats always steal my show. I waited outside the door until a woman exited. Then, I waited a few seconds after another woman stepped inside. The time the door opened on me, standing there with my camera, was embarrassing, but the woman was gracious.

  9. The comment about “not for the faint of heart” got a LOL from me! “Fenders” is a great name and it looks like a great place to come with friends — and with brothers too, of course. I love the picture of the sunset; it really shows off the wonderful expanse of farmland. I’m intrigued by the thing on the right of the photo of Dublin Bay (another great name); it looks kind of like an old organ. Do you know what it is?

    1. Having been caught in the act of trying to get a picture of the Ladies Room door, I know how bad that can be (although the woman was gracious). That is an old pump organ. I don’t know why it’s there, but it always reminds me of The African Queen. Fenders was a nice place to meet a great group of guys and share some beer and pizza. Looking out toward the horizon in Iowa is an amazing experience. It just fades into the distance.

Dan, the doors to the “necessaries” are fabulous. Love the bright red entrance to Dublin Bay too. Great buildings inside and out. They look so friendly and welcoming.

Sundance has his side of the bed staked out and you better not forget it! He’s a handsome boy.

    That’s a beautiful Iowa sunset.

So glad you had another great visit with your brother and family. So many memories in the pictures you took. Priceless.

Fenders and Dublin Bay were both great places to find good food, a cold beer and good food. We went to Dublin Bay because they had Irish Nachos on the menu, and I wanted pictures for Carol Parson’s visit. That’s the kind if guy I am, if I have to visit a bar, drink some beer and eat some food in order to make a person more comfortable, I’ll do it 😏

Sundance eventually welcomed me to that side of the bed. Then he slept on my legs.

The sun has burned off the fog here, and it’s already getting hot. I hope you have a good day.

My burning question for you is if you liked the dark beers. While porters and stouts are some of my favorites to try, they can be hit and miss. I hope you keep trying the darker beers on occasion as I have been trying IPA’s on occasion. Not my favorite, but you never know…

Excellent door post, you get 1,000 bonus points from me for…you know. It would have been more, except no Star Trek mention. :-P Have an awesome day, Dan.

I bought a second identical flight. The dark ale was very good. I used to drink a Brown Ale from a micro brewery here in CT, but they went out of business about a year before the craft beer explosion. I also like Modelo’s dark lager, but it’s hard to find here. I might try some other dark brews in the future, as long as it’s not synthahol 😏

Thanks for the bonus points. I hope you have a great weekend.

      1. Haha Dan. Dogs aren’t much better with suitcases. Years ago, my grandparents visited us and brought a bag packed with wonderful items. She usually packed something for our dog, but he hadn’t received it yet. Instead of patiently waiting, he decided to pick out his own toy. We were poor at the time and Al-Licks was accustomed to getting old sock toys to play with. Lo and behold Grandma had the perfect toy knotted right on top ready for his pleasure, my grandfather’s $30 a pair compression socks. (That’s 1970’s prices.) Al-Licks proudly pranced into the living room with his new toy. Grandma was horrified. The rest of us roared at his initiative.

          1. Grandma seethed for a few minutes then admitted that it was pretty funny. Al-Licks didn’t harm the socks, which helped.

  49. Quick question, Dan. There seem to be a number of posts from people I usually visit for TD that appear to be linked but aren’t. Any idea what’s going on? They look like this:

[…] For Thursday Doors challenge hosted by Dan at No Facilities […]

but there’s no clickable link and in many cases, not even a gravatar.

    1. I don’t know. I think we have fewer posts than normal. I follow most of the regulars, so I can get links if pingbacks fail. It does seem weird.

  50. This was an interesting post, Dan. I enjoyed the history of the Beer Club. It’s lovely how a beer between two people, while their wives were out at a book club turned into an actual club.
The door to the ladies’ room is creative. Next time I see a man take a picture, I’ll remind myself not to be surprised; it’s probably for Thursday Doors :) .

    1. I take great care before snapping a picture of a Ladies Room door, now, Smitha.

I loved the colorful doors you shared with us!

  51. The local establishments look fun and inviting. Loved the sunset could nearly see Nebraska looking that direction. 😉

  52. Thanks Audrey. Once when my brother was driving me to the Omaha airport for a 6:00 am flight, I saw a strange glow in the distance. We had just passed a sign that said “Omaha 62 miles.” I asked my brother what the glow was and he said “those lights are in Omaha.” That would be like me being able to see lights on Long Island from my driveway!

  53. Great pics as always! The bathroom doors rate as “never seen that before”….love them! The outside shot is a “typical” Iowa shot!! We use to drive from Cedar Rapids to Des Moines every few years when I was growing up for the State Fair! Usually very hot and humid….ugh!

    1. That’s the first, and perhaps most creative and clever way of identifying restroom gender.

I still haven’t made it to the State Fair, Kirt. Maybe in 2025, after the election, when I can concentrate on the food.

  54. I can see how that would have been embarrassing, taking a photo of a ladies loo door! Great photos and good for the men who get together regularly, it’s not something men generally do

    1. It’s a fun group. I hope I can time my next visit to coincide with a meeting.
