For over 30 years, I, or someone in my former department, spent uncounted hours setting up new PCs, printers, networks, phones, and other devices. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, people were excited to get their first PC or a new one. Throughout the early to mid-90s, people became accustomed to us adding memory or swapping an anemic hard drive for a slightly less anemic hard drive. Then Windows arrived, and people became less and less happy every time we arrived to apply an upgrade.

My favorite Windows laptop has become too old, frail, slow and stuffed to continue to be reliably of use to me. Several programs that I depend on refuse to allow me to install the latest version. Several times this year, I’ve had to move files in order to make room for one program or another to run. Of course, the photos I keep adding to the hard drive aren’t helping.

The thing is, I’ve had a newer, better, more capable laptop sitting here for years, but I’ve been putting off making the transition. Last Friday was the last straw – PhotoShop decided it wasn’t running on this old laptop ever again. So, I’m in transition. And, just like my former coworkers, I’m not happy about it. I’m backing up files, moving stuff to cloud storage, reinstalling programs, and copying configurations from one laptop to another. Now I understand why they used to complain”

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. My eldest used to use the “Blue screen of death” as his screen saver just to tease the techies!

Love you photos they are lovely as always especially the roses and the flag. Your weather is proving the point half the world is burning and half is drowning. Stay safe 💜💜💜

  3. Boy, do I feel your computer pain since I’m still using the new and the old computers. My husband keeps asking me why I’ve got two laptops plugged in. Now, if I only had a good answer. :-). I love the tree branch frame you used in your CT river shot. 👏

  4. I usually wait until the computer breaks before I am forced to move to another one. It is annoying to make the transition. However, I keep the data on (backed up) external solid state drives and some on cloud storage, so that part should be easy. Best wishes making the transition to your new laptop.

  5. If you want to ease your computer pain a bit, try to imagine what it’s like to have no idea what you’re talking about and still have to get a new laptop. I keep asking myself how I could live so long and know so little. On the other hand, there’s the trestle through the summer trees, the Rose of Sharon against the stormy sky, the Muppet mushrooms. THOSE I get! Nice shots! And now I must deal with “anyone else but me, anyone else but me” going around in my head.

    1. Thanks Maureen. When you consider all you’ve had to learn and adapt to, I think you know (or have known) a lot. Too bad the farther we go, we have to deal with things that last way less than the things that preceded them. I’m glad you like the pictures today. Last ones off the old laptop. We’ll see if I have any come Saturday.

I love the Rose of Sharon with the dark sky background. Beautiful! That poor cat is sad because she woke up and saw the world is still the same!

Saw the Connecticut River on the news, not sure what section, and it looked like Niagara Falls gone crazy!

Lots of weird looking mushrooms here too. Yucky.

Despite the miserable weather, Old Glory is looking grand.

    1. That may have been up near Holyoke, MA – large falls and rapids there. I’ll have pictures of Great River Park under water on Saturday (I drove by today on my way to get may car serviced). They said “Showers possible” yesterday – we have almost an inch of rain.

I actually felt bad for that cat, Ginger. She’s usually trying to hustle me off her property. Maybe she was just tired of the rain and the heat.

The Rose of Sharon are busting out their summer stuff. It’s good to see color in the yard.

I waited around for the sun to reappear so I could get that image of the flag. I’m glad it finally poked through, and I’m glad you like it.

I hope you have a nice day – more rain later this week.

  9. Welcome to our world, Dan! I hate having to get new computers and transfer everything, not to mention being unable to play my fav games bc the newer versions refuse to run them. And don’t even get me started on the subscription service for Word. Rather than buy a newer computer, I’ve pulled everything off to an external hard drive so I can keep using this one. I resist paying a monthly subscription with Word. (no, resistance is not futile!)

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I do have the subscription to Office, Carol. The major benefit (in addition to the software) is 1tb of cloud storage. I also use Excel and PowerPoint, so… Still, subscriptions in general bother me. Everyone wants to nibble away at my monthly income. Having them has made upgrading a little easier, but not easy enough. Losing access to favorite programs is sad. I still have several that I miss where the “new and improved” version is nowhere near as good.

In the course of upgrading, installing and getting this newer laptop ready for work, I have rebooted more times than I can count. Everything acts like it’s the only program running. “I need to restart the computer…” Well, who are you? Yes, I’ve been talking to my software.

      1. Absolutely, Dan. I’ve been ranting this exact sentiment to my dad so much recently. My everyday laptop still runs Windows 7, and I’ve been using it since 2012. I have a newer laptop that runs Windows 10, and I hate every single thing about it. I hate the operating system, I hate the new trackpad style, I hate how some of the most basic buttons on the keyboard now have to be paired with “Fn” to make them work! And some of the buttons are just GONE, like, oh, cool, I guess no one but me uses the “home” button for anything anymore. And it won’t install or run 2 of the only 3 programs that I need for work. Now I understand, they’re old — one is literally version 1.1 from 1997, I get it! But I don’t NEED anything more fancy and expensive. I don’t want a new operating system. I don’t want a new machine. I don’t want to spend more money to “upgrade” when what I HAVE works just dandy! I just want what I have to keep on working. Same with my “phone”. (Put that in quotations because it works only with wifi, can’t make calls or anything.) It was a gift a few years ago, but it’s a really obscure model, so couldn’t find a case for it. I baby the heck out of my stuff, so thought it would be fine. Well, the plastic back suddenly started breaking little chunks out down the side of the phone. After three little pieces fell out, I woke up one morning and the screen was cracked. I taped up the side where the pieces were coming out, but then of course the OTHER side where the buttons are started popping apart too. But the phone itself works just fine! I don’t want a new one! If you SAW my phone right now, I’d be embarrassed. I glued the hell out of it to get it back together, and then I covered it in electrical tape and packing tape. It looks HORRIBLE. BUT it works. I don’t want to get a new one — I just want what I have to go on forever. I just don’t understand the mindset of the people today who want a new device every two years, or every time there’s something new. I think, “Do you not customize ANYthing you own that you can so easily just discard it and start using a new one!?” I spend so much time getting things just how I want them, looking how I want them to look, functioning how I need them to function…. why would I want to then up and change them!? Am I really the weird one!??! (Sorry, as you can tell, it’s a nerve all right, lol!) :P

        1. I do understand, Wendy. It’s when the software you do need refuses to run on the old machine that you have to change. That’s where I am. Of course, I did do this for a living, so I shouldn’t be complaining. I feel like I should get some level of “professional courtesy” for supporting Windows for so long. I know, they don’t care. That was then… Hang in there.

  16. That Rose of Sharon… I feel your pain Dan. When my photos ruled my existence my PC memory filled up so fast. And I didn’t trust the cloud. Getting an external hard drive helped but I don’t even have them all categorized. It was much simpler with Picassa. It put everything into neat files and was so easy to use. I got a new Gateway laptop which was okay but was so expensive we got less storage. It’s taken me a long while to learn the new ‘fruitspeak’ of my latest laptop and having other devices of the same brand helps only a little. As soon as I master this one I’m going to master Spanish! 😉 Good luck making friends with the ‘new guy’.

It is a Windows 7 laptop and missing a Backspace and Return key so I slip on a pair of vinyl gloves to hit the “nubs” that are left. I only use it for photo storage, but it works fine. I work from home and have since 2011. I use a Windows 7 laptop with a wireless keyboard to remote into work where we have Windows 10. However, I have a brand-new Windows 10 laptop purchased by my boss that I only use to do updates and run scans so it is ready when this Win7 laptop bites the dust. I don’t really care for the Win10 interface. Windows 7 is like an old shoe to me. So yes, I “get” it. :)

I have had two desktops crash that were Dells.

        1. I was the IT guy, and I stopped buying Dell after one attempt very early on. We stuck with HP and IBM/Lenovo. I’ve only had one laptop that wasn’t a ThinkPad, and that was a Compaq back in the early 90s when laptops were rare.

It cannot accommodate Windows 11 and is four years old already. I bought a copy of Microsoft Word 2010 and have not gone to Office 365 on my personal laptop … not interested in doing that as I only use Word. I will always sing the praises of HP!

            2. I didn’t know that … I have no family, so it would just be me using it. I would be interested in the 1 TB of storage though. That’s a lot of storage.
