Welcome to Thursday Doors! This is a weekly challenge for people who love doors and architecture to come together to admire and share their favorite door photos, drawings, or other images or stories from around the world. If you’d like to join us, simply create your own Thursday Doors post each (or any) week and then share a link to your post in the comments below, anytime between 12:01 am Thursday morning and Saturday noon (North American eastern time). If you like, you can add our badge to your post.

Note: Since people participate on and off, especially in the summer, I am letting everyone know that there will be no Thursday Doors on August 10th and no Recap on August 13th.

Every year, our local volunteer fire department stages a carnival around the 4th of July holiday (Independence Day in the US). The carnival has amusement rides, food, fireworks, food, a parade, and more food. I don’t need to describe a carnival, or a parade, and I’ve already shared pictures of the food, but I like to highlight this event because of the people who organize it. Volunteer firemen.

These men and women are professionals. They volunteer their time. They attend training. They learn how to operate complicated equipment. They show up when they are the only people capable of saving lives, saving property and protecting neighborhoods. People in this town literally owe their lives to these brave men and women. I support them at this event, and in other ways, and they are welcome to a Thursday Doors post every year.

I hope you enjoy the photos in the gallery, and I hope you have the opportunity to thank a fireman for the service he or she provides.

I also hope you will take the time to visit a few of the other contributors’ posts. If you don’t have time today, please check out the Sunday Recap, where you’ll be able to access all of those posts.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  1. Great things happen when I stay up late! Wow, Dan. I almost didn’t get past the carousel but I’m glad I did. Those are some great looking vehicles. Seems like a fun time for all. I always feel firefighters don’t get enough credit for putting their lives on the line. Great post!

  5. It looks like an exciting time of the year, Dan. What a fun carnival, with rides, and fire trucks. My grandkids would love to go on all the rides and visit the fire trucks. Kids must be lined up at the fire truck doors to wait for their turns to look at the interiors.

    1. Our daughter used to love the rides. I have to admit, I liked it when she wasn’t tall enough to ride without an adult. As the parade goes by, the firefighters toss candy out to the little kids. Then they park all the trucks in a row and kids (and certain adults) can explore.

Your post is equally fun today!

      1. My grandkids love all kinds of rides. My daughter had a family camping trip two weeks ago. My 6 years old granddaughter went on the Zipline with her dad. She told me the story of meeting the height and age requirement to go with adults.

Love your Firemen’s Carnival every year. I agree with you, firefighters don’t get much credit for the job they do, most of them voluntarily. I thank them one and all.

How I loved going on the Carousel when I was a kid, and then going on it with my girls! I love the helicopter ride. We didn’t have that. We had teacups though. They were so cute. I often thought they should have been beer mugs!

The elaborately painted Newington Fire and Rescue truck is magnificent! All the trucks are when you stop and think of what they help these men and women do to protect us.

Great post Dan. You started my Thursday off with a flood of nice memories! Whoops! With the rain we’ve been having, I probably shouldn’t have used the word “flood”! 🤗

    1. Beer mugs? Oh my goodness, Ginger, I’d be riding that all night! My father and one of his cousins were thrown off an adult-sized helicopter ride (which hung from cables and was controlled with a rudder) for trying to get close to a tree.

The Newington firetruck was the star of the show. Once parked, the kids flocked to look at it up close.

These people don’t get near enough credit, so I’ll keep featuring them in some kind of post every year. And yes, careful with the word “flood” – let’s hope we don’t have more chances to use that this weekend.

  21. Last week the local news highlighted our fire department due to a rash of home fires we have had lately. The captain talked about how hot the firefighters get inside their suits. I really had no idea. They have the volunteers swapping out so the other firefighters can cool off. If it’s not the fire itself, it is their protective gear that can do them harm in this heat.
I hope someone knows what make/model that black car is. What a beauty!

  29. Hurrah to all the firefighters everywhere, and to that cute helicopter ride too! In Slovenia they are so busy these days since there are daily vicious storms with winds that knock down trees that kill people. And here in Tuscany it’s just hot. No rain for months. But we’re off to Slovenia very soon.
