It’s Saturday and David and I are going to meet at the bar for a few minutes before a busy weekend gets in the way. In fact, I may not be able to read/reply to your comments until tonight, but I always reply.  While we grab a quick beverage, we’ll see if we can slay the beast that is Linda G. Hill’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt. Actually, she’s been kind to us today:

If we were having a beer, you’d be in a cheerful mood.

“Hi Cheryl. Is Dan here yet?”

“I think he just pulled in, David. Can I get you started with a John Howell’s Bourbon?”

“I want to wait to see who’s paying today.”

“You are. Dan paid last week when Smitha visited—don’t tell me you forgot?”

“No, but here’s the deal. I’m going to ask Dan to pick a number. If it’s less than the number I have in mind, he pays. If it’s equal to or higher, I pay.”

“What’s your number?”

“Huh?”

“Dan’s never going to believe you unless you tell me what the number is.”

“You’re probably right. Twenty-two.”

“That’s a weird number.”

“Twenty-one was Roberto Clemente’s number when he played for the Pirates. Dan is getting ready to go see the Yardgoats play on their annual Roberto Clemente Night. I’m guessing he has twenty-one on the mind.”

“So, you’re cheating.”

“No. That’s not cheating. It’s an enlightened guess, but it’s not cheating.”

“Hi guys!”

“Hi Dan. We’ve been waiting for you.”

“Any particular reason? I mean, I’m not late.”

“David has a bet to make with you. I’m involved, but only to keep it honest—I think it’s a dumb idea.”

“OK, David, what’s the bet?”

“Pick a number—any number. If it’s lower than the number I’ve chosen, you pay for the drinks. If it’s over my number, I pay for the drinks.”

“Any number?”

“Nothing absurd, but yes, any number. I’ve already told Cheryl my number, so this is all above board.”

“OK, forty-two.”

“Forty-two? Damn.”

“David’s number was twenty-two.”

“Ha! You thought I’d say twenty-one.”

“Off course I thought you’d choose twenty-one. You’re wearing a Roberto Clemente shirt.”

“Yeah, but forty-two is the answer to ‘the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.’ Am I right?”

“Well, you’re right enough for me to buy you a beer, Dan. I forgot about The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Oh well, you paid last week.”

“Forty-two was also Jackie Robinson’s number. Both of those numbers have been retired at Dunkin Park by the Yardgoats.”

“Here you go guys. Bourbon, a glass of ice and a snifter of seltzer and a cold Modelo for the winner.”

“Cheers, Dan. Isn’t Jackie Robinson’s number retired throughout Major League Baseball?”

“Yes, and the owner of the Yardgoats hopes to get Roberto Clemente’s number retired everywhere as well.”

“I guess you’d like that.”

“I would, but it’s not up to me.”

“When will the Yardgoats, I mean, Los Chivos de Hartford play?”

“They have two games left, but August nineteenth is Roberto Clemente night.”

“You and Faith going?”

“Of course!”

“Be sure to take some pictures.”

“David, like you have to remind Dan to take pictures.”

“Well, I’ll see you before the nineteenth, but good luck to Los Chivos.”

“Thanks.”

Note: The gallery is heavy with bunnies. Several of the pictures (all of the babies) were taken by The Editor.

Note: I will be late replying to comments.

  2. Looks as though you won’t have to buy pumpkins for Halloween! It was especially good to sit at the bar today. I hope your busy weekend holds lots of fun.

    1. It should be god fun, Maureen. If we get pumpkins, I guess we have to give them to the squirrels. At the moment, their cop is doing better than ours.

  3. Reading your exchanges at the bar always prompts a smile. I think the last time I visited a bar was in college, decades ago. I love your photos…lots of bunnies in our area as well. They seem to manage the heat better than the rest of us. Have a great weekend, Dan.

    1. I don’t know how they manage in the heat with that fur coat. They are cute, though.

    1. We don’t have a big year, Judy, but we have three places that provide shelter (I guess). I thought they were sealed, but what did I know.

    1. I think it’s our lack of “lawn” care that keeps them happy. They love our weeds :-)

The rose of sharon is beautiful, very similar to our hibiscus.

    1. I think we know some of his children. It was good to see them refreshing the banners. I think the Rose of Sharron and hibiscus are related.

  7. Great post this morning, more fun and uplifting somehow…maybe cause you weren’t paying, lol. I’m dying to know what kind of bunnies yours are, because here, we have domesticated rabbits and any wild bunnies are just jackrabbits as far as I know. I love those pretty Rose of Sharon, never seen those before down here.

    1. These are Eastern Cottontails – they actually have been disappearing around New England which is why Rivergirl doesn’t have any in Mane) but they are trying to reintroduce them. We also love the Rose of Sharon.

David was very perky today! But maybe from now on after you shake hands with him you should count your fingers! He’s getting a bit shifty in his old age!

The Editor took some great shots of the bunnies. Those baby bunnies are so darn cute, and so is baby Smoky. You and the Editor have a lot of wild mouths to feed! And those guys know they will never go hungry or without fresh water at the Antion Wild Life Estate.

That pumpkin seed left by the squirrels? They’re just paying it forward Dan!

Love the picture of the cat under the cow statue!

As always, beautiful shot of Old Glory. I commend your town for now including banners of our military heroes from the Korean War. Next time I’m in my town, I will check to see if we’re doing the same here. Every town should be!

Happy weekend Dan. I hope it ends this week and starts next week on the right note.

    1. The baby bunnies are way too cute, Ginger. We seem to have lost some of the Smokeys, but this one is so handsome – he’s almost jet black.

I am glad to see the town rotating the banners, and recognizing the veterans of the Korean War (and I’m glad they called it a “war”).

That cat was in her glory under that statue. She didn’t mind me taking he picture.

I hope you have a great week.

    1. Thanks Cheryl! I knew someone would know the answer.

We’re not sure if it was a bird or a squirrel, but we put raw sunflower seeds out for the birds, and the squirrels have been known to bury peanuts, so it seems logical they’d bury the seeds.

  15. PS I’m starting to think birds are the master seeders. That monster tomato ‘tree’ we had here last February was, as my mother-in-law used to say a ‘volunteer’. But we all knew who dropped that seed. 🫢

  22. So, the answer to the big question in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Jackie Robinson’s number are both 42. I have to wonder about that and what it means if I don’t believe in coincidences. What I don’t have to wonder about is that you have lovely photos in your gallery. I like the happy bees and other animals, but my favorite photo is the cat under the cow. Makes me think of cat/cow in yoga – alternating poses that might look strange to some but make my back feel better.

    1. I think the numbers speak for themselves. I’m not familiar with the cat/cow, but if it makes you feel better, I’m glad for you.

      1. In yoga, cat has an arched back, like a scared Halloween cat. Cow is the opposite with a sway back. Of course, the movements are slow.

        1. Oh. OK, I can see the cat. Hard to visualize bending for the cow. Thanks.

  23. LOL – when I thought of the number you’d choose, I wondered if you’d go with 42! My hubby always says this same line when he’s asked to choose a number, “Forty-two is the answer to ‘the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.’ Am I right?”
Your yard is becoming quite the wildlife sanctuary. Tell the Editor she did a great job capturing the little bunnies. It’s nice to read you had some cooler temps to enjoy, I hope this week treats you well and that the pumpkin blossoms aren’t eaten by new bunnies! 😉

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks Shelley. We’ve been surprised that the bunnies haven’t eaten the blossom or the leaves. Maybe they made a deal with the squirrels/ I’m more surprised I haven’t hit it with the mower.

      42 is he answer.
