It’s Saturday, and by the time you read this post, I will be closing in on the Connecticut border, on my way home from Pittsburgh. My brother and I converged on our hometown (and the setting for the books in the Dreamer’s Alliance series) from opposite directions (him from Iowa, me from Connecticut) a week ago. We enjoyed a week of sports, food and nostalgia, including spending time in a few bar and grill establishments. I’m going to keep this post short – OK, shorter than normal, as Linda G. Hill’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt arrived as we’re getting ready to head out on my last day in town, and there’s a Steelers preseason football game on TV tonight. For the prompt, Linda gave us:

I might be pushing the envelope a little by changing my traditional opening line to: “When we were having a beer” we were about to do something fun or had just been doing something fun.

I think it’s fair to say that the best part of this week was watching the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates beat the best-in-baseball Atlanta Braves Monday night. We had to endure a rain delay of over an hour, but since we had Pittsburgh Baseball Club level seats (the favorites of Abraham Rosella in The Evil You Choose), we were able to escape the rain.

Other highlights included a trip to the Steelers training camp in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, stops at family grave sites and a visit to my undergraduate alma mater in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Anyone who has read either the second or third book in the Dreamer’s Alliance series would not be surprised to learn that we stayed in the Fairfield Inn on Neville Island—we always stay there—it’s convenient to both of us as we drive in, and most of the places we like to visit. Last year, we discovered Carmody’s Grill, a delightful bar and grill on Neville Island. The tribute to Canada in the gallery at the top of the page was taken there.

We also discovered a bar that serves the signature meal of Zach, Billy, Abbie and Uncle Mike—fried shrimp and fried mushrooms. Good food, fun events, a few adult beverages and great conversations carried us through a wonderful week.

The gallery includes some pictures from the trip. I’m sorry if some of them make you hungry.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

    1. Thanks! It was a wonderful week. Exciting things, mundane things, all good. I think Pittsburgh is a fascinating place to tell stories. I have books planned (beyond this final book in the series) but they are all set in Pittsburgh.

    1. Haha – salads and some exercise :-) We visited the local historical society, and managed to answer a few nagging questions about our paternal grandparents. It was a very good week.

Are you and your brother twins? I thought I was seeing double.

    1. He’s 4 1/2 years older, but there is a strong resemblance. We have always purchased seats at the Club level – if we’re only going to go to one game a year, we figure we should splurge. However, the tickets are nowhere near the price of similar tickets at Fenway or Yankee Stadium.

Those onion rings were the best I’ve had.

  9. The Braves are driving me crazy. They did nothing but win before the All-Star break, now they do nothing but lose… well, it’s inevitable, I suppose…

  10. Wow! You two could never deny being brothers! How wonderful that you got to spend more time together, and on home turf to boot! You both do your parents proud.

And to put icing on this already sweet cake, your team won. How great is that!! But I think the Editor is going to be placing only healthy food in front of you for awhile!

    1. There might be a slight change in the menu this week, Ginger. But we were on vacation, so I think a little slip was acceptable. I did leave out a few pictures of slightly more healthy entrees ;-)

Seeing them beat the Braves marked the end of a perfect day. I didn’t mention that we took the riverboat shuttle to the game, so the entire evening was great.

    1. We had a great time, Jennie. On the way down to Morgantown, we got off in Waynesburg and drove down on Rt-19. That’s they way I had to drive my first two years there, before I-79 was finished. That alone brought back some special memories. The university has grown so much! I was amazed.

      1. I’m so glad you had a great time! I can appreciate your memories. Driving the old Rt-60 before I-64 was built brings back the same memories. I can imagine how much WVU has changed since you were there. Aren’t you glad you took that drive?

  20. Hi guys! Wow, your brother looks so much like you! It sounds like a fun week and I’m thrilled you got to see your Pirates take the ship! One thing we never did during our time in Atlanta was to see an actual Braves game. We were at the Battery (formerlySun Trust Park, now Truist) often since it was just up the road from our house. But we watched a few from Yard House Grill or Wahlburgers. Those pretzels might have been my staple diet while at the game, though. Yummy.

    1. Beating the Braves was special, Cheryl. We would have enjoyed the game regardless, but that was great! Pretzels, pretzel dogs and a variety of beer helped us enjoy the entire week. I have only heard good things about Wahlburgers.

  21. A pretzel dog would certainly hit the spot! Glad you had fun watching your Bucs, Dan. My Orioles have been a blast this season!

    1. You guys are well ahead of us on the turnaround, Paul. It’s funny, I get to watch the Orioles more often than the Bucs due to the division you’re in. I do like it when you beat those other teams. There’s nothing like a hot dog at a ballpark.

    1. We had a wonderful time, Lois. Abraham Rosella was a mob leader in the second book in the Dreamer’s Alliance series. He conducted business out of that club.

Off topic, but have you ever been to Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia? I saw pictures of some beautiful doors there in this new book I ordered (Accidentally Wes Anderson) and, of course, thought of you. Really pretty doors.

    1. Not exactly health food, Pam, but it was all good. I drew scenes out of those places for the books, and it was good to go back and visit. We even managed to drive across a bridge featured in the upcoming 4th book, when traffic forced us to find an alternate route.

Fairfield Inn on Neville Island—with travel envelope…did you need to use any of it after eating all the fun food? 🤔
Yippee for the signature meal that Zach, Billy, Abbie, and Uncle Mike loved to eat —fried shrimp and fried mushrooms. I chuckled at all the light beverages along with the food 😉
Enjoy the rest of baseball season and all the fun watching games together with loved ones!

    1. Thanks Shelley. The 4th and final book in the series is coming in September, and it is also set in Pittsburgh. The city offers so much to work with.

The hotel has a very supportive and friendly staff. They have a large lounge where they serve breakfast, but we used if for meals when we got take-out (some of our favorite places don’t offer dine-in service since the pandemic).
