It’s Saturday, time for Linda G. Hill’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt. I’m going straight to the prompt because it’s a doozy.

If we were having a beer, you’d be waiting for me.

My guess is, two Saturdays in a row on the road made Dan forget when he’s supposed to be here, Cheryl.”

“He’ll be here, David. In fact, here he comes now.”

“Welcome back, Dan.”

“Hi David. It’s good to be back.”

“I don’t know, Dan, the pictures you’ve been sharing make me glad I’m not competing with some of those bars.”

“None of them has a bartender as good as you, Cheryl. We long ago established that you’re the best.”

“Awww, that’s going to get your first beer on the house.”

“Um, what about…”

“Your bourbon is on you, David. Or Dan. Whichever of you is paying today.”

“I’ll pay. Dan has some explaining to do.”

“I do? What’s to explain?”

“Why the world saw your new book cover beaming in from Willow in the UK before we saw it here in this bar.”

“Here’s your bourbon, your snifter of seltzer, your glass of ice and your cherries, David. Dan, here’s a Modelo. And David, I had already seen the book cover.”

“You saw it, Cheryl? When? Where was I?”

“I saw it back in May, and then again in July when Dan changed it.”

“Changed it? What was it before? Why didn’t I get to vote?”

“Relax, David. The cover didn’t change much. I swapped pictures of the bridge, and I added a better picture of the police car.”

“You added? I thought you called up one of those chatGBT generator things and asked for a police car and a van on bridge.”

“ChatG-P-T, and no, everything in the cover is, or is from a photo of mine.”

“So, what, you took a picture of a sideways police cruiser the last time you were in Pittsburgh and some how stuck it on that bridge?”

“No. Actually, the police car is from Ames, Iowa. When I was there in June, my brother drove around the block and popped out of some little alley across from the police station.”

“So, you asked that chatgb, sorry, Pt thing to change the Ames car into a Pittsburgh car.”

“No, I did that. I changed it from Ames to Pittsburgh and added the lights—those are from cars in our local Firemen’s parade—That’s why it wasn’t finished until July.”

“What about the van?”

“That van was stuck in traffic ahead of me on Rt-128 in Waltham, Massachusetts. I just added the lettering.”

“That’s another question I have. Who’s Rascal Todd?”

“She’s a new character in this book. In fact, Introducing Rascal Todd was supposed to be the title of this book.”

“Back when it wasn’t going to include Zach and Billy?”

“Yes.”

“Well, I for one was happy to see the old gang back for one more story. You boys having anything to eat.”

“Wait, wait, you’ve read this book, Cheryl?”

“Again, yes, an early copy. I like it. Food? You guys want any food?”

“I’m afraid, I already ate, Cheryl.”

“Did you stop at Scooter’s Dan?”

“No. I had an errand to run up in West Springfield, so…”

“You stopped at the White Hut. That’s OK. I would have stopped there, too. We almost lost that place during Covid.”

“The White Hut? Is that the place that’s famous for their fried onions?”

“Yes, and their hand cut fries and onion rings.”

“Which did you have, Dan, fries or rings?”

“They have the best idea, ever, David. You can get a mixed order—fries and rings—for an extra twenty-five cents.”

“That is a great idea. It’s always so hard to choose when you know both are good.”

“I’d suggest that here, if the owner would consent to adding onion rings. You boys want another round?”

“We do, Cheryl. This John Howell’s Bourbon goes down easy.”

“OK, David. And since I saw the cover and read the book, I’ll slide you that bourbon on the house.”

“Thanks Cheryl. So, Dan, when do I get to read Introducing Rascal Todd?”

Secrets Held Against Evil, David. I changed the title when the book became part of the Dreamer’s Alliance Series.”

“Potato, potahto, Dan. When do I get to read it?”

“September. It will be out by mid-September.”

“And Billy is back? I like Billy. And Cynthia Leman, I like her too.”

“Cynthia Leman is back, David, stronger than ever. And Billy is the narrator.”

“I like that. He did a good job with your last book. And Abbie, is Abbie in this book, Dan?”

“She is.”

“Abbie, Cynthia, and Rascal Todd. That’s a lot of women.”

“Here’s your free bourbon, David. Do you have a problem with a lot of women in a book?”

“No, Cheryl, no. Of course not. No, I like women fine.”

“That’s good!”

If you want to follow part of the process of getting that car on the bridge, watch the slideshow below.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  1. Hi Dan I sense some friendly rivalry at the bar between David and Cheryl.. 😄😄 like David I am glad the old gang is back for another chapter in The Dreamers Allience.
Those photos are great, the critters around your place are so cheeky!
I was also very interested in how you made your cover … An excellent job 💜💜

    1. Thanks Willow. David is a little envious of Cheryl, but he doesn’t work as hard as she does. I’m glad you liked the little sequence for the cover. There were so many steps like that involved, but that gives a good flavor. I enjoy the work, but it’s tedious. I hope you have a great weekend.

  2. I’m positive I’d like the White Hut and their combo, and you gave me a lunch idea. Congrats on the new book. You’ve certainly been busy in the writing shop this year. I hope the new one is a success like the last ones, and it’s a feeling of pride for you personally. Last weekend I replaced a garage door outdoor keypad all by myself, and I was so chuffed I would have bought you two beers if we lived closer. :-)

    1. DIY does give you that feeling of success. I also have a project going in the wood shop, but I’m way behind on that one. I’ll share some pictures when I get to a point where I think it’s going to work. If your lunch is anything like my lunch was, it’s going to be good. I hope you have a great weekend.

  4. Is White Hut for the hamburger lovers who can’t afford to eat in the Castle? 😉

    1. As much as I enjoy the occasional slider, the hut is far superior to the Castle – but a great joke!

      The baby bunnies wave back.

  5. The White Hut looks like something straight out of the ’50s!

    1. The White Hut was a teenager in the ’50s. It opened in 1939 and (I wasn’t here) it seems like it was a significant part of Springfield. They closed briefly a few years ago, but someone bought the place, and as rarely happens, they kept everything the same. I’ve been going there since the 1980s, and it’s hard to drive by without stopping for a burger with grilled onions or a dog with everything,

  6. I don’t know what’s going on with WP, but this, along with several other posts, never made it to my Inbox. I had to go to Reader to read this.
David is such a riot. He always almost is on top of things and then…no. No, he’s really not. Such a character. Enjoy the weekend, Dan.

    1. There are some things about WP that defy explanation, Lois. I miss notifications often. For people who post on a regular basis, I go looking. For others, I look at the link to the previous post and think, “I didn’t see that…”

David is an odd duck, but he’s our odd duck.

      1. He most definitely is our odd duck. Bar would be way too quiet without him.

  7. David is definitely a man of questions. Good thing you always have the answers! Congratulations and best of luck with your new book venture. A nerve-wracking but exciting time for you.

Seeing the transformation of the police car fascinated me, but also makes me wonder how I would ever know if any photo I’m looking at is the real deal or doctored. That’s scary.

Love seeing all those busy bees in your plants, especially the one covered in pollen. I can’t believe that maple leaf, in the beginning of its Fall transition and on the ground already. Hope it isn’t an omen for what winter has in store for us. After all, it’s apparent Mother Nature has lost her mind!

Hooray for the White Hut and its new owner. Nice not to see another empty building sitting unused and watching it slowly cave in on itself. I hope their business soars!

Have yourself a great weekend Dan. You should take the Editor to lunch at the White
    Hut!

    1. Thanks Ginger. This is when things start to get crazy for me, leading up to that, “Dan, it’s done!” moment when I let it go. The police car transformation is relatively simple stuff compared to what experts can do. It is scary. I wanted to be able to say the cover is comprised of photos I own, but there are plenty of ways to get images that you can use. It was fun to create a scene, though.

The maple leaf might not have fallen. The squirrels sometimes cut the loose and let them dry. Then they add them to their nest. We generally leave them on the ground, and we always leave some near the fence in the fall, in case they have to make repairs.

The best thing about the White Hut’s new owner is that he didn’t change a thing!

I hope yours is a great weekend.

  8. Dan, it seems you could write a book based solely on choosing and manipulating a book cover. And it’s complications. Ha! 😁

I thought of you while hiking in CO. A cute little chipmunk sat on a rock, looking longingly at me while I was munching on a few nuts. Unfortunately, it’s a big no-no to feed critters in the park, sooooo…poor thing.

Have a great Saturday and congrats on book #4!

    1. Thanks Mary. The covers are more work than I imagined, but I get stuck on an idea, and you know how that goes.

I guess I would follow the instructions, and I know those guys have to be able to forage for food. The poor things around here have been losing their natural food sources for years. They’re even losing the artificial sources. Several of the older neighbors who died had bird feeders and birdbaths. None of the younger families seem to bother. Maybe they will if they have children. That’s when we started feeding the squirrels. They were so much fun to watch.

      1. I get it. Where my brother lives, they keep building apartments and houses and buildings, so it’s no wonder I saw two bucks standing on a street corner, foraging in the grass. It’s a shame, really, too many people taking away the beauty of their surroundings.

I could do without the wasps, but the flower is lovely. One of the things I miss about our new life is not having plants around, but air plants I can manage.
I need to mention your books and PJ’s (unfurling artist) Christmas cards on my blog for great gifts when I post next. Maybe it would bring both of extra business this holiday season!

    1. Thanks Kim! I appreciate every mention of these books. I don’t like the wasps, but they are so docile when they’re enjoying the flowers, and we need pollinators, even if they can be nasty at times.

  18. After I recovered from the photo of the hamburger with double-sides, I was able to laugh as usual. In particular I loved the GBT/GPT part. I’d be giving that all kinds of wrong letters, I’m sure. The entire process for the book cover made me reach for a cold cloth for my forehead. I congratulate you, however, on getting just what you wanted and on making so much good progress. The red and white of the diner would sure pull me in even if I didn’t know about the onion rings! What a beauty!

    1. I’ve been sharing a lot of food pictures lately. When I got here this morning, I wanted to drive back up for another burger. Getting the cover the way I want it drives me crazy. I was so happy my brother was willing to drive around and then try to angle his car so I could get the right shot. I was reluctant to stand in front of the police station taking pictures. The White Hut always makes me want to stop.
