Welcome to Thursday Doors! This is a weekly challenge for people who love doors and architecture to come together to admire and share their favorite door photos, drawings, or other images or stories from around the world. If you’d like to join us, simply create your own Thursday Doors post each (or any) week and then share a link to your post in the comments below, anytime between 12:01 am Thursday morning and Saturday noon (North American eastern time). If you like, you can add our badge to your post.

I have had a busy week, but I knew I still had enough photos from our trip to Pittsburgh (and side-trip to the WVU campus) so I decided to take the easy way out. I’ve described the photos as best I can in the captions. Some are long, so the lowercase ‘i’ in the circle thing may be required.

I hope you enjoy the pictures, and I hope you have a chance to check out the links to the doors by the other participants. We have doors from around the world. If you can’t view them all today, check back on Sunday for the weekly recap, in which all the links will be presented.

Note: On Saturday, there will be two important announcements made at the bar. I hope you can join David and me.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  1. Dan, winderful photo all. I like that long shot of the Pennsylvania countryside…idyllic and iconic.
Nice to see the former church repurposed. Love the deep red door.
P..S. I agree it’s always nice to see a Dairy Queen.

    1. Thanks Miriam. There have been churches transformed into housing, and one into a brewery. I’m always glad when the buildings can be saved. So much went into their construction, it’s a shame when they have to be torn down.

      1. It’s the culture and heritage we saved, Dan. In Fullerton, CA, the residents lobbied to save one theater in downtown even though it wasn’t a theater anymore. They got some funding to reinforce the structure so it wouldn’t collapse. I don’t know what they do it for right now.

  3. Hi Dan, These are a good last lot of pics. The red door of the Pi building is lovely. The picture of Pennsylvania’s countryside looks like a painting and I like the angle from which you clicked St. John’s parish. It looks like a good summer- all the photographs have the sun shining on them.

  8. Interesting ex-church with a red ex-church-door. Interesting to speculate about the building with an unknown function. The satellite dish is unlikely to be for TV these days I guess. For communication then? Financial services? Startups?

    1. After I took a close look at that building, I realized it’s quite large. I was trying to crop it to show the coolers better, but it goes back a good distance. It is interesting to speculate. Maybe I’ll add it to the Writing Challenge next year and someone will tell us the story.

Your post was interesting and thought provoking.

    1. Jack’s Bar is typical of the Pittsburgh bars I remember. I think it was in the 1990s that a man wrote a book called “Bar Bars” – he called out Pittsburgh as having too many to list. Small, blue collar places to grab a beer and watch some sports.

I enjoyed your post today, especially the gate.

  13. The photo of the Pennsylvania countryside is a real eye-catcher. Love the corner door in the first photo, and also the corner windows above. Yes, the bright red building that’s under 24 hour surveillance with the two coolers left there is a head scratcher!

The former church that’s now Pi Inc and soon to be repurposed again must’ve been a beauty in its day. Love the red door. Hopefully new owners will provide some TLC.

Nice collection today. You always find something interesting in your bag of tricks Ginger

    1. Thanks Ginger. Driving to Pittsburgh, and driving 45 minutes outside the city always provides scenes of beautiful countryside.

I do hope that church is preserved and maintained going forward. I have one more trick to pull out of this bag. Hopefully I’ll have time to prepare it next week. Then I need to drag my butt out there and get some new doors.

I hope you have a great rest of the week.

  15. That tiered building of unknown purpose needs only a little frosting to make a great wedding cake. I love the picture of the farm in the middle of the fields; there is breath to be had there. So different from the city feeling. I also liked the combination of the football field with the college spires in the background. I so hope that Pi door gets good attention — it’s a beauty. I’ll see you at the bar on Saturday!

    1. Thanks Maureen. This was an eclectic mix. I don’t know why I didn’t capture a sign or something to remind me of what that building’s purpose is. Oh well, perhaps another time. The rural areas outside of the city are so beautiful. On the ride to St. Vincent’s College, my GPS took us off the highway on a shortcut like those in the movie Holiday Inn. It was pretty, but I was glad my brother was driving.

    1. Repurposing an old church is certainly better than knocking it down, or letting fall to nature. The countryside in Pennsylvania is beautiful. I am amazed every time we drive through the state (which takes forever).
