Happy Saturday. Before I join David at the bar, I have to explain how I chose today’s subject. Let’s begin with Linda’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt:

I was thrilled when I read that. The lights on the left side of my utility trailer stopped working and, since I needed to use the trailer today, I had to fix it. The word could be trailer or light. After completing the repair, I was gathering my tools. I realized that I had left one screw out of the taillight lens, I was wedged in between the back of the trailer and the front wall of the garage. While helping myself up, my right hand slipped and bent backward. The pain was intense. Given my awkward position, I couldn’t get up. I was able to reach my cell phone. I called my wife. She ran out, helped me up, helped me inside, packed my hand in ice and put away all my tools. When I told her about Linda’s prompt, she pointed out that the last thing that had to be fixed, was me.

If we were having a beer, you’d have nothing but questions.

“Yikes, Dan. what’s with that brace on your wrist?”

“It’s preventative. I injured my wrist yesterday and, while it feels much better, I’m trying not to re-injure it.”

“Can you hold a beer?”

“David, I wouldn’t beer here if I couldn’t hold a beer.”

“Cheryl, please bring Dan a beer and I would like a John Howell’s Special.”

“Coming right up.”

“You hurt your wrist fixing your trailer. Were you able to fix it?”

“I was. The lights are all working now. Here, look at the pictures.”

“Why is that white wire sticking out like that?”

“That’s the ground wire. It needs to be secured to the trailer’s frame. It was broken at the same place as the other wires, so I reattached it at the front.”

“Where was it attached before?”

“About halfway back, where the other wires split to the left and right sides.”

“Why didn’t you replace it at the same point?”

“I bought yellow and brown wire. Thirteen dollars a spool. I couldn’t justify a spool of white.”

“It will work from where you attached it?”

“Unless the electrons object to traveling an extra eight feet, it should work fine. In fact, it does.”

“Well then. I guess I should give you a hand. No pun intended. Do you know why the wires broke?”

“The trailer is hinged in the center, so you can dump stuff out. I use that feature to load my snow blower in the back. I think the wires got caught on something when it was going up or down.”

“So, they broke at the hinge point?”

“Yep.”

“Well, I was serious about giving you a hand. Your beers are on me. You can buy next week.”

“And the week after and the week after that.”

“Dan, what are you talking about. Not that I mind your buying three weeks in a row. But why?”

“We have visitors coming.”

“Three weeks in a row?”

“Yes. Three of my favorite authors, friends and mentors. They all have new books, and I’m not going to make any of them wait a month or two.”

“And the three are…?”

“Cheryl…”

“Cheryl Pennington? Our Cheryl?”

“Yes, our Cheryl. She’ll be here next week.”

“She’s here every week, Dan.”

“She’ll be here next week as a guest. Skippy will fill in for her behind the bar.”

“And after Cheryl?”

“Damyanti will be here on the twenty-eighth, and Teagan will be here on November fourth.”

“That is so cool. We’ve never done anything like this before. I can’t think of three better people to start with.”

  1. Ouch, your hand slipped and bent backward! I felt the pain too, Dan! You’re lucky to have the phone with you to call your wife to help. Fixing the trailer? Another day. I’ve never seen black squirrels. We only have grey squirrels here.

    1. I had just taken the phone out of my back pocket, Miriam. If I hadn’t, I would never have been able to reach it. We have grey and black squirrels (they are all technically northeast grey squirrels, the black squirrels are missing a gene). They are so darn cute.

  4. Glad your hand is okay and the Editor was home. I always carry my phone when I’m outside because one never knows when some strange injury can occur. Your light issue made me remember one camping time when a friend offered to hook up our brakes and lights while we were finishing up packing. About half way home, we lost the brakes on the trailer because he hadn’t wrapped the extra cord so it had been dragging on the highway until it frayed and stopped working. There we were pulling 8,000 lbs of trailer with no brakes. Scary and expensive. :-) Happy Saturday, and I’m guessing you’ll be enjoying a cold one and maybe a few Star Wars reruns.

    1. Yikes! Judy, that had to be scary. I caused some damage to a trailer because I was asked to connect the wires but I didn’t know what I was doing. I’m gad you managed to get home safely. I have to run things down to our town’s annual hazardous waste pickup today (that’s why I needed the trailer). Other than that, the heaviest thing I’m lifting is a beer.

The bunny was running away. I was talking to it, and he turned for the picture. They’re all skittish, but we’ve had hawks flying overhead, so I guess they have good reason.

  9. Dan, I’m glad you didn’t break a bone. I’ve bent fingernails back before, but never my hand. Ouch! I hope it rapidly returns to normal.

The inconsiderate parking and car guy? Yeah, I dislike it when humans are too lazy to put things back where they found them. I also dislike the unknown drivers yesterday who changed lanes at the very last minute because…ooops. One almost took out another driver with the antics. Thankfully, I was a witness, not the drivers who probably had to get their hearts out of their throats.

It looks like you are having a pretty autumn. The colors are nice here, but our weather is making up for the sunshiny and rain-free summer. No fall bike rides…boo.

    Have an excellent weekend!

    1. Thanks Mary. My wrist feels much better this morning. Still some pain, but not a lot. I’m noticing pain farther up the arm, but not bad.

Inconsiderate drivers seem like a different kind of pandemic – they’re everywhere. The recent thing driving me crazy is people who pull into the on and off ramps at high speeds to pass people in the right lane of the highway. You don’t expect to see people going 75 MPH on an off ramp.

Our fall colors are muted at the moment, but we are having nice cool weather. I hope you get a few rides in. Take care.

Well, I’d say you were overdue for a mishap Dan. At least this time you weren’t carted off in an ambulance to the ER! I once bent my hand backwards and the pain was horrific. Like you, a day later the pain was creeping up my arm. All in all, it healed pretty quickly. I hope the same is true for you. Thank God you can still hold a beer!🤗

If I were that bunny and hawks periodically flew overhead, I’d be mighty skittish too! Your squirrel community is too cute for words. They have you and the Editor well trained. The tithonia the Editor planted may be a late bloomer, but it’s sure pretty.

You’re getting good at describing the leaf shadows! And that maple tree is stunning.

Nice shot of Old Glory backlit by the sun.

Give that hand some TLC this weekend. Hope you have a speedy and uneventful recovery. Ginger

    1. I’m off to the annual hazardous waste pickup (that’s why I needed the trailer – not that we have so much, but I don’t want it in the car). After that, it’s nothing heavier than a beer, Ginger. The wrist feels a lot better, and the arm pain is manageable.

The bunnies in our yard aren’t so skittish, but this guy was at a neighbor’s place. The squirrels, birds and bunnies all have us well trained. The little birds squawked at me to put water in the shallow bird baths. I come to serve.

I love seeing the flag backlit by bright sun.

  17. Gee Willikers, Dan! Don’t scare me like that… Granny Phanny was already gathering up her herbal remedies and splints upon seeing that photo. At least there wasn’t any pink foamy stuff… but still. I had a very bad break to my wrist back in DC. It’s amazing how severe pain doesn’t have to be in the legs to prevent one getting up. The one and only lucky thing about that episode was that a stranger crossed the road to help me get on my feet. I walked the half-mile back home alone. I’m glad you weren’t alone and very glad that it wasn’t a worse injury. Hugs.

    1. Thanks Teagan. My legs were partially under the trailer, so there was no way for me to get up on one knee. I joke about using those Helping Hands to hold things up instead of asking my wife to hold things from a ladder, but this time, I needed her hands to get me up. When I called her I was sure to say, “I’m not bleeding” lest she arrived with a wagon of gauze pads and alcohol wipes to keep me from passing out. She did a great job, and the wrist is feeling better.

  18. I’m glad your wrist is in a brace. That is the only way for it to heal. I have a special remote explosive device that I would be willing to lend you. It is for helping Mr. Multiplace and the cart dumper to quit those practices. Placed under the car and detonated, the car is then positioned within the white lines, only upside down. Just say the word. The photos are terrific. Thanks for the mention.

    1. Haha – I may take you up on that device, John. So concerned about his precious vehicle but not willing to walk the cart 20′. This is when I miss my 12-year-old Dodge pickup. I’d love to park it within inches of his car. The brace seemed to help quite a bit. At least it kept me from bending things during the night. I am not a quiet sleeper.
