Welcome to Thursday Doors! This is a weekly challenge for people who love doors and architecture to come together to admire and share their favorite door photos, drawings, or other images or stories from around the world. If you’d like to join us, simply create your own Thursday Doors post each (or any) week and then share a link to your post in the comments below, anytime between 12:01 am Thursday morning and Saturday noon (North American eastern time). If you like, you can add our badge to your post.

A few weeks ago, I was heading to Somers, Connecticut and I made a wrong turn. I knew within seconds that I took the wrong road, but I knew where I was going. I was on the road to Ellington, CT, not Somers. There were places to turn around, but I knew that, once I got to Ellington, I could make a quick loop and get back to the main road. The good news was I figured I could snag some photos along the way.

Ellington is a rural community. It’s still supports a lot of farming, but it’s also home to a number of people commuting to Hartford and other centers of activity like the University of Connecticut. I will probably drive back out there before too long. For today, I hope you like the photos I’ve gathered. I have a few more, maybe for next week.

I also hope you have a chance to visit some of the participants who have linked to this post.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

This weeks doors effort is once again from Tasmania. https://dancingwithmagpies.wordpress.com/2023/11/02/some-playful-doors-in-tasmania/

  3. I’m glad you took advantage of your wrong turn to Ellington, CT, and took all these beautiful photos, Dan. In my watercolor painting class, the instructor said, there’s nothing considered a mistake in painting. When we drop a color by mistake, we improvise to make it beautiful. It can be true in life, just like you did.

    1. Thanks Miriam. I think your instructor is right. I’ve made many wrong turns, but most have added something special. I’ve also made mistakes in woodworking that have ended up making the project better.

    1. Adding to my load? Nonsense, I loved traveling through your photos – I am a little hungry now, but I can fix that. Your doors and shutters are beautiful (I really like working shutters). I do wish technology would support picking that croissant off the dish and having it materialize here.

      1. Just imagine the tortures of ‘smellyvision’! Why is it when you walk down a street someone else’s dinner always smells better than your own? Our home in the Algarve has very much more prosaic shutters- not ones to feature in a photo but they keep out the cold (or heat!) I was pure envy!

  11. What a wonderful wrong turn to make. Ellington looks beautiful, and that New England architecture is so attractive. I was rather taken with the barns and the building that needed a lick of paint. I am intrigued to know whether you are at the wheel and moving when you take your pictures or whether you pull over and stop – I’d hate to think you are ‘on the move’ I have done a bit of that in Bristol, photographing street art at traffic lights, but I get a bit panicky.

    1. Most of the “drive-by” pictures are when I am not moving. Sometimes at an intersection, but not holding up traffic. Sometimes, off the side of the road. I prefer to park and walk around, but it’s not always possible.

I like the first hose. Everything about it captures the ethos of the location and the images of Connecticut, in my mind at least.
But my absolute favorite is the long barn that could use a bit of paint (as you noted in your comment on the photo). Its weather worn character is precisely what I enjoy about doors and architecture! Thank you, Dan. I enjoyed the lovely detour you shared.

Dan, I want to move right into that first house! What a beautiful, welcoming home that is. Love those arched windows and trim, not to mention the front porch.

I love both barns/silos, I just hope the one gets some needed TLC.

The churches, possible library, historical society are all fine buildings and nicely maintained.

That first house is a beauty. I’d like to sit and watch the activity on the green.

It was still below 30 when I walked today (and I waited for it to “warm up” a bit). There’s frost on Linus’ pumpkin patch. I think it might be time to cut those guys open and let the critters enjoy the seeds.
