I’ve been working on a writing project—with any luck it will be my next book—that has a wide variety of characters. Several are professionals, you know, the kind of people who have clients instead of customers. Anyway, it got me thinking about when I worked as a consultant and some of the things people might not consider when they think of those professions.

Two years ago, I shared two funny stories (first, second) about a lawyer I worked with during that time. Don W, a.k.a. DW2 was defending a client of the accounting firm that I worked for. I was brought in as an “expert witness” (sounds way better than it really is).

The client was located near Orlando, Florida. I lived in Hartford, Connecticut, but I traveled extensively to Orlando that year. I had to conduct tests on a specific mini-computer that was set up in the client’s facility. The lawyer worked in Lexington, Kentucky but he would travel to Orlando when I was there to discuss my findings. We stayed in the same hotel, and we usually had dinner together. Of course everything was expensed back to our client.

One night, after dinner, we sat at our table, finishing a bottle of wine, and Don looked over at me and asked:

“Which one of us is going to treat the other with our mutual client’s money?”

This post is part of Linda G. Hill’s fun weekly series One-Liner Wednesday. If you have a one-liner, and would like to join in on the fun, you can follow this link to participate and to see the one-liners from the other participants.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

        1. They’re bad guys anyway.

          1. What’s a good story without some bad guys in it. I don’t have enough bad people in my current WIP. I need to fix that!

            1. Haha. I’m trying to write a mystery, so I need a measured amount of bad, and I need to spread it around.

  4. My brother used to sign things with his initials, DAO. One of his co-workers began every phone call with a rendition of “Day-O.” Our working years gave us some lasting chuckles, didn’t they? And that little red maple! What a show! It’s giving you a fine preview of what’s to come.

    1. That’s funny, Maureen. I had to put up with “Book ’em Danno” throughout my career. That little red maple is hanging on for the show. I love that color.

      1. I always told people my name was Lois ‘like Lois Lane.’ Invariably, the response would be, “Hi Lois. I’m Superman.” But they were the client, so polite laughter ensued. 🙄

Nice to see your town celebrates important birthdays.

    1. I don’t think I’ve ever built anything for me. When I was building these stairs, Maddie was checking them out for sleep places. and the squirrels like getting out of the wet grass. I figured you’d like that banner.

  7. I started thinking about what I’d like for dinner on an expense account – steak and/or lobster kept coming to mind.
You knew I’d love the last two pictures, eh Dan?

    1. The best was when we took the client contact to dinner. They’d thank us, not always realizing that their company was paying the bill. They say “A consultant is someone who steals your watch and then sells yo the time.”

I did know you’d enjoy those two photos, GP. I wanted them side-by-side.

LOVE today’s one-liner! You are getting to be an expert on leaf shadows Dan!

The little red maple is determined to hang on for as long as possible. MiMi is such a good girl looking after Sammy. If I were in the dairy store, I would want to bring their cat home with me!

I don’t think that’s your welcoming committee Dan. I think it’s The Beggars Committee figuring out how to get more peanuts from you! Because, you know, the poor guys are starving! Lol!

I like that wisp of a reflection in the burning pit, the birthday banners, and Old Glory looking proud and spiffy.

    Have a happy Wednesday. Ginger

    1. I’m not sure I got all the shadows right, Ginger, but I have fun with them. I’m not sure what people driving by are thinking.

MiMi loves watching out that door, and you’re right about the beggars. They know I never leave without peanuts.

That might be a new flag. I think they replaced it last year for Veterans Day. Maybe that’s a thing now.

    1. I didn’t take as much advantage as I could, Teagan, and I visited some seriously crummy towns. Orlando was hard. I was there from April to October – the only guy on the plane, in a suit and not going to Disney.

  21. We had clients and they would call about their employees. Once we handled their injury, they became claimants. They should have paid us more just to keep things straight.

  22. Similar story, not as funny. About a hundred years ago I had a date with a ‘colleague’ (not from the same company but at the same conference). At the end of the meal he asked if I’d mind ‘splitting the check. You know, expense reports and all that.’ Needless to say, that was our first and last date.
