It’s Saturday. It has been a busy week—for some of us, and we are here at the bar to simply relax. OK, relax and wrestle with Linda G. Hill’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt.

And, for the first time in a few weeks, we just get to roll along with the thoughts at random.

If we were having a beer, you would be paying.

“Hi Dan. I guess it’s just you and me today.”

“And Cheryl. Don’t forget Cheryl.”

“If he forgets me, I’ll likely forget the cherries in his John Howell’s Special.”

“Oh no, Cheryl. I’ve been trying, and enjoying, different drinks, but I’m looking forward to settling back into my routine, and that involves…”

“A glass of John Howell’s Bourbon, a snifter of seltzer and a glass of ice. Yes, David, we know what your routine involves.”

“Well, I’m really looking forward to this drink. I almost got killed on the way over here.”

“David. Methinks you exaggerate a bit.”

“What? ‘Methinks.’ Who talks like that, Dan?”

“I see it sometimes on Twitter. It saves characters.”

“I thought Twitter was gone. Isn’t is X now?”

“Here’s your bourbon, David. Dan, here’s your Modelo, and in case you’re interested, the chef informed me that Teagan’s Stuffed Mushrooms have been added to the menu. I should also mention that if anyone wants a Sazerac, we still have absinthe.”

“I’ll spring for a couple orders of mushrooms, Cheryl. Absinthe is a bit of an acquired taste.”

“I’m sticking with beer today, Cheryl. And, as for your question, David. I’m still calling it Twitter.”

“Methinks that’s absurd, Dan.”

“What?”

“Using the archaic form of ‘It seems to me,’ saves five characters. On the other hand, ‘X’ uses six fewer characters than Twitter. I mean, if every character matters.”

“David, who besides you, would get all worked up over the use of ‘methinks’ ?”

“Joe Walsh.”

“Joe Walsh? The guitarist for the Eagles?”

“And…”

“And what? Are you referring to his solo career?”

“No, Dan. I’m referring to the song he wrote for the James Gang – ‘Walk Away’ – Remember?”

“Ah yes. It seems to me I do remember.”

“Can you image that song if Joe Walsh had written, ‘Methinks you don’t want to talk about it.’ I don’t think it flows as well.”

“Ok, you win, David. Now what on earth almost killed you on the way over here?”

“Some jackass passed me on the off ramp.”

“What, you weren’t exiting fast enough?”

“No, you don’t understand. I was coming up to my exit, and the guy behind me was trying to get me to go faster.”

“If you were getting ready to exit, you were in the right lane, right?”

“Right lane, left lane, middle lane—none of that matters anymore. People are crazy.”

“That is a sad truth, David. So, this guy got upset and used the ramp to pass you on the right?”

“No, not that guy. He cut off a tractor-trailer and passed me on the left. Another guy behind him passed me on the right—using the exit ramp as if it was a lane of travel.”

“So, if we go back to song lyrics, you had clowns to the left of you, jokers to the right…”

“Yes, stuck in the middle. I almost had to go down to the next exit.”

“Here you go guys, Teagan’s mushrooms. Two orders. You guys didn’t feel like sharing?”

“Restaurant math is the reason, Cheryl.”

“I don’t follow you, Dan.”

“Well look at this plate—eleven mushrooms. How are we supposed to share that. Do I arm wrestle David for the last one? I swear, if there were three of us sharing an order, there’d be fourteen mushrooms.”

“You know, Cheryl, I don’t like to admit it, but Dan’s right. Last night, my wife and I split an order of soft pretzels at…well, at a place in Hartford, and there were three pretzels.”

“So, you cut the third one in half, right?”

“No, I ate two. Methinks my wife was fine with one.”

Under the gallery, and the advertising by this boy, I’ve included the two songs hinted at in the conversation.

    1. I have to agree, that is pretty. The pines will shine for several months now that the others are mostly bare.

  2. You had me with “archaic.” I knew I was going to feel right at home, and I did. It’s good to dust off a neglected word from time to time and keep the language oiled! Poor David’s near-death experience on the highway is something we all probably can feel. Scary. And the closer we get to the season of Peace on Earth, the more warlike it gets. As for your photos, I am in awe of the close-ups of the drippy pine and those leaves with the serrated edges. Those are beauties!

    1. I’m glad archaic works for you, Maureen. I’ve seen the highway madness move onto the on and off ramps. It’s crazy – people getting up to speed or slowing down, and people driving crazy fast on the same bit of highway. The drippy pine (I like that) seems to be a favorite today. I hope you have a nice weekend.

  3. Great songs Dan I used it too! I love the line Clowns to the left Jokers to the right! I have had that situation while driving too we call it a jam sandwich!
The photos are fabulous your bang on with leaf shadows…. Though the fat hummingbird/ drone could be a killer Whale?
Hi to David ( cantankerous as ever methinks) and the love Cheryl .
    Have a great week 💜💜💜

    1. I saw your post before checking here, Willow. Great minds thinking alike, methinks ;-)

I like “a jam sandwich” that’s what it feels like, and someone is bound to get hurt. All shadows are up for grabs. I like them, but I don’t always have a good explanation. Killer whale works.

  4. The mere thought of absinthe makes me cringe. The bad memories are enough to make me avoid it now.
I’m voting for the bunny leaf shadow.

  5. Thank you, Dan. Now, I have words to describe our highways, “clowns to the left of you, jokers to the right.” Our police forces are so understaffed that we never seen them on the highways which results in most drivers going 10-20 mph over the speed limit, and they definitely cross lanes and pass on either side. Scary. Happy weekend, and I hope the mushrooms were delicious, all 11 of them. :-)

    1. It’s scary to think that that’s a good description, but that song was the first thing to pop into my head when I read Linda’s prompt. Getting to it was a challenge, but New England drivers came through. I wish we had more police out there. We’ve seen some very bad accidents. Take care.

  6. People have been seeing figures in the cloud formations for centuries – you on the other hand are the first one I know who finds characters in the shadows of leaves. Way to go, Dan!
(I haven’t made Teagan’s mushrooms yet, but I’m dying to!)

    1. I blame (or credit) Maddie, GP. She would stop to sniff every one of those leaves.. That’s when I started seeing shapes, as she finished up sniffing. Let me know when you’re going to make those mushrooms. I think I can be there in 20 hours ;-)

  7. You two are always a couple of clowns at the bar, Dan! We enjoy all your witty banter though and I’m so glad David is ok! Traffic is indeed scary, especially in the DFW area. I’m so glad to be away from it and in a peaceful place…for now. I’ll keep you posted on if that changes in Florida next month!

    1. Thanks Kim. When I was still working, we had to get special permission to rent a car in Florida, and they wanted to make sure we couldn’t get our business done without it. Good luck!

  8. 😂😂😂 Methinks that was a fine analogy using a great song. Clowns and Jokers are being kind to those drivers, Dan. As a lover of Shakespeare and all things old world-ly I like the word methinks. I also like betwixt and whilst. Sorry, David. I also agree about the bluebird hotline and the name change. 🤦‍♀️I think I’ll have to pass on Linda’s prompt today. It could get me into trouble. So many clowns, so little space. 😉Happy Saturday guys!

    1. Thanks Cheryl. We do our best to stay safe on the roads, but it isn’t easy. I do like the older words. As for the clowns, generally not a fan, especially when they get behind the wheel.

Dan, bringing a car nowadays is life-threatening! Everyone makes up their own rules of the road. And for some people, walking isn’t any safer!

I love the diamonds on the pine needles. I cannot believe that first photo of the tree with all its leaves. What a beauty.

I agree with all the leaf shadows, except for the first. I see a dolphin.

“Methinks” is a phrase my dad always used, and I picked it up from him. I never thought of it as being archaic, but now methinks I do!🤗

I laughed out loud at the squirrel on your railing looking down at the squirrel on the deck floor who was looking for peanuts. The one on the railing must’ve been saying, “You fool, I ate them already!”

Old Glory manages to shine even when there isn’t much sunshine.

Hope you and the Editor have a nice weekend. Methinks you need a bit of leisure time. Ginger

    1. Thanks Ginger! Dolphin works for that shadow. Someone else suggested killer whale. Methinks I may have gotten that one wrong.

Since I’m getting to the point of being archaic, I think I’m entitled to use archaic language.

That tree just doesn’t want winter to come. It keeps hanging onto those leaves.

The squirrels try to con us (and it usually works for them).

I hope you have a great weekend.

  10. You know how sometimes people choose to change lanes at the last minute, like when they start to get off an exit ramp and then go “oops, wrong one” with their steering wheel without checking for other vehicles? Yeah, I witnessed that not too long ago, three times within two days. One guy was very close to causing an accident with someone else as my heart was up in my throat when it happened. I am not a perfect driver, but this stuff makes me crazy. Makes me want to stop at Cheryl’s bar for an old fashioned. ;-)

Hope you have an awesome Saturday and weekend, Dan. I would have joined the SoCS family today, but there’s the too-many-things going on again. Thankfully, though, I am staying home and away from the crazy drivers!

  11. David was on it today! It reminded me of one of my favorite George Carlin quotes (although there are many): “anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac” They are all jackasses to me. My husband gets so irked when someone passes him on the right. Which leads me to telling him he should probably get out of the left lane…and there ensues a conversation. 🙄

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Haha – one of the problems in CT is that we have a lot of left-hand exits. I can’t move over for the wanna-be-maniac behind me because I’m getting off soon. And, if I do move over, they will never let me back in. I take a “mirrors forward” view of the road. If I’m passing the traffic to my right, I’m OK in my lane.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. That’s funny. Here in my town, we are just the opposite. And some drivers don’t realize the right lane runs out onto that right turn, so they are scrambling to the left. Mostly the Alabama drivers…🙄

        Liked by 1 person

        1. I try to avoid those situations where I have to scramble, but sometimes they sneak up on you.

  19. Your leaf shadow photos are so imaginative! And that Stuffed Mushrooms recipe is a keeper. But one theme from this post that resonated is the notion of “routine.” The older I get, the more I value routine or predictability perhaps. But maybe that’s just me? Very good post in any case!
