Although it is getting colder in our area, all but the first photo in the gallery were retrieved from the archive from years in the past. Cee’s CFFC prompt this week is:

I don’t have a photo of the woman I worked for in the late 70s, but she could send a chill up your spine in a heartbeat. I’ll go with that other chilly woman – Mother Nature.

  3. cold is a feeling always hard to capture, these are well chosen. Often wonder how the little birds survive in the winter

    1. Thanks. It must be hard for the little birds. We put out food and water for them, and we do our best to leave some habitat.

    2. Your question made me think of the first verse of The North Wind Doth Blow, a Mother Goose rhyme I remember from my childhood:

      The north wind doth blow,
      And we shall have snow,
And what will the robin do then, poor thing?
      He’ll sit in a barn,
      And keep himself warm,
And hide his head under his wing, poor thing!

The whole poem is here: https://www.poetrynook.com/poem/north-wind-doth-blow

      1. Nice 😊 it would be lovely if they all had barns. I live in Finland so cold winters are given, so feeding birds if possible is important, but you have to continue to feed until the ground thaws .

      2. I don’t remember that poem, but I like it. We end up with a lot of little birds nesting in shrubs.

  4. The words are visual – I got the picture immediately. :-) Good photos too especially the one of our old friend with the buffalo plaid coat. Happy Monday of this holiday week, Dan.

  5. Great photos but I’m not sure I like this prompt. I mean, why invite coldness into your life sooner than you have to! It’s still warm-ish here. But, as they say, winter is coming…

    1. It is, and we’ll recognize it by many different signs.

  6. The snow-nosed squirrel (maybe a new species?) is hilarious! He knew perfectly well what he looked like and how it would sell! Clever little con. As always, it’s good to see all the cool stuff (pun intended) around us every day. That little frozen patch in the dead grass took me back to some of the empty lots of childhood — such adventures there. The snowy cypress is my favorite for pure gorgeousness. The one that made me cold was the wind through Maddie. I felt that! Thanks for helping me wake up!

    1. I think Smokey rushed out and put some snow on his nose just for effect. He’s is adorable (and he knows it). We were always amazed by our setters (all four) that they loved the cold and the snow. They don’t have an undercoat, so no winter coat for them. Maddie loved that plaid coat, though.

      1. And she wore it so proudly. I bet she was a trend-setter (haha).

  10. Smokey with his little white nose is adorable. While it is always great to see snow photos, thankfully there is none here. We are getting a cold snap here tomorrow–down to the 50’s! 😆

    1. We might hit 50 on Wednesday – that’s the only day in the 10-day forecast where it will be that warm. We’ll keep Smokey fed.

  12. As is typical, you have captured this latest challenge quite terrifically in photographs. I had to zip up my vest as I looked at the ice under the lake shelter. It’s that time of year where shivers are not unusual. Here’s hoping you’ll stay cozy and warm indoors.

    1. Even though Maddie is no longer with us, I still bundle up and go for walks. But I don’t walk if its under 20 degrees.

      1. You and me both! I know if it’s too chilly for Elsa, it’s too chilly for me. That’s why God made elliptical machines. 🤣

  13. Dan, I don’t know how Smokey got that snow to stick on his nose, then come to your front door (probably knocked!)knowing full well that you would have your camera at the ready! This guy is so stinkin’ cute….and he knows it!

Maddie in her plaid coat with her silk blowing in the wind is a joy to see. I love seeing her here.

Notice how the ducks are swimming only where the sun is shining! And those birds on the electrical lines would give Alfred Hitchcock heart palpitations just thinking of a sequel to The Birds!

The snow on the cypress is a stunning winter scene. And talking about stunning, Old Glory with the winter backdrop of green pine trees backed by bare limbs is quite an impressive sight.

Happy Monday Dan. Stay warm. Keep the wood stove cranking for MiMi. Ginger

Stay warm, and have a lovely Thanksgiving!

    1. 21 is cold. It gets colder here, but I don’t walk when it does. I guess if they minded the cold, they could fly south. We will feed them and try to keep fresh water out for them.

I hope you can stay warm and also have a lovely Thanksgiving.

  15. Love these photos! I’m chilly after looking at them…by the way, was that a black squirrel? Or just the light? My sister has a black squirrel in her yard and I’ve heard they’re rare…Maddie looks beautiful by the way! Love her coat!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. That is a black squirrel, and they aren’t rare around here. They seemed rare up until a few years ago. Now we see them all over the neighborhood. They are Easter Gray squirrels with a missing gene. They can mate with gray squirrels. I’m not sure what the results are likely to be.

Maddie loved that coat. We would walk, and she would want to keep it on long after coming home.
