Cee is on a break, so she just let her CFFC Challenges from last week run again. The CFFC challenge was/is:

Last week, I mined the archive for pictures that made me feel cold. Many of you agreed. Since the past two mornings have started with me walking with the temperature at 20°f (-7°c), I thought I could snap some new cold images. I hope you agree.

  1. It’s cold here also but not as cold. I love your squirrels, Dan.

    1. Thanks Miriam. You’re in the same climate with Cee. We tend to run a little colder in the winter over here.

      1. You’re welcome, Dan. Cee is 23 miles south of where we are. We have frost. No snow yet.

  2. We got a jolt of winter yesterday, and these pictures fit in nicely. We’d best get used to it, yes? That’s an impressive shot of the blue jay; I can’t imagine one of those sitting still for a portrait — you must have promised him a peanut. I love the image of the curving road in late autumn.

    1. That might be one of the blue jays that visits our yard – I wasn’t very far from home. I don’t toss peanuts onto other people’s property. Squirrels and blue jays do not understand. That curving road is the one from which you can now see the railroad bridge. Look for that photo later this week.

      1. Oh, yes, I can believe the jays and the squirrels don’t like it much that you won’t throw peanuts wherever they want you to. You’d think by now they’d know. I like that road even better now that I know it leads to that view of the trestle! I will certainly be looking for that!

        1. It’s one of the few roads that runs along the river where you can actually see the water. It’s not the safest road, or the most well maintained, but I take it now and then just for the view.

Yessireebob, those pictures look cold! It’s the same here. Sammy and Smokey and the rest of the beggars are no fools….they’re right there waiting for their peanuts!

Frost covered grass and leaves that crunch when walked on….no mistaking that winter is just around the corner.

I’m surprised not to see a little head poking out of the woodpile!

Love the “puddle” and that’s a magnificent shot of the bluejay.

Old Glory, rain or shine, snow or heat, half staff, always flying proud. Ginger

    1. Thanks Ginger. We haven’t see “whack-a-mole” yet, but I’m guessing she’s getting ready to set up housekeeping. I think it’s too hot in there during the summer.

The frost gave way to rain yesterday, but I think we’re in for plenty of frost this week.

I hope you have a great week.

  6. I can’t get over how fat Sammy is! Our squirrels aren’t nearly that plump. Must be their peanut-free diet. ;)

    1. These guys are constantly foraging in the yard, in addition to begging at the door. I think they prefer bulking up to storage, although there are some skinny ones who bury some of the peanuts.

  7. You seem to be having colder weather than us. We’ve seen a few frosts but no ice. Love that you have a chunky squirrel mail delivery.. so cute.

I seem to remember us having colder weather than you guys last year. Maybe I need to put an arrow on the roof, pointing to Maine.

  8. We had a few cold days at the end of last week and should expect just a couple mornings under freezing temps this week. I’ll take it while it lasts because it’s just a question of time!
    Lovely images.

  9. It’s 13 degrees F here right now. I won’t be making my trip to the mailbox for hours yet. Brrrr!
I saw an Elephant munching, your Blue Jay looked more like a Golden Jay in that lovely light and perspective, and the squirrel on the railing looks so fat and fluffy with its winter coat.
Stay warm and have a great week.

    1. You can have this record, every time, Deborah :-) At 13f, I don’t go for my walk.

I was thinking about an elephant. I wasn’t sure it was heavy enough. I had to look up Golden Jay (then I had to refine that to ‘bird’ because I didn’t know Golden Jay was a thing). I’ve never seen one of those around here, that I know of. They are beautiful. Sammy thanks you for attributing his fat and fluffy look to his winter coat ;-)

    1. 20f is generally the lower limit for my walks, John. That was because we felt the sidewalk was too cold for the dogs’ feet. I’ll have to see if I stay inside during all the cold snaps.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I’ve been seeing the blocks in other people’s blogs for about two weeks, Cheryl. I wasn’t sure when they would make their way here, but it’s nothing I’ve done. Some of the squirrels are gathers and some like to bulk up for the winter. We have lots of protection against the cold.

  19. Those squirrels do look cold – good thing they have you helping them out. After a gorgeous Fall and three of four perfect holiday weekend weather days, we got snow followed by freezing rain last night … and so it begins.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. We had a dusting of snow last night. Just enough to remind us that it’s coming. The squirrels in our neighborhood lost almost 10 trees (including several oak trees) this past year. Three houses right around us have gone from having trees to a lifeless green lawn. More than ever, I think we have to help them.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. We have four less trees in my neighbor/my yards this Fall and I thought that was bad for them. The squirrels and birds have moved on, but it was rough on them, I’m sure. I feel badly that I’ve not gotten to the Park in three days as we had freezing rain then a snow squall went through – tomorrow’s not looking too good either.

        Liked by 1 person

          1. I’ve not made it to the Park for three days – my poor pals are wondering what happened, but we had freezing rain Sunday, then snow – the paths are no double slick. Tomorrow for sure.
