“When did giving Tuesday become ‘Give us more money’ Tuesday?”

This may be the first time I started with the one-liner as opposed to the backstory. But it’s me, not a robot, not a chatbot, so you know there’s a backstory.

In case you were not aware, yesterday was the third race in the Triple Crown of the “Dipping Into Your Wallet” series. We survived six weeks of Black Friday (with probably two weeks of extended Black Friday sales to come). We survived Cyber Monday, which began in my inbox on Saturday and is still going strong. Giving Tuesday—which originally was an opportunity to help someone or some worthy institution—requests began showing up in my inbox on Sunday and will likely continue the rest of this week.

In the U.S., PBS stations (radio and TV) are part of our Public Broadcasting System. These stations are “not for profit” and they offer some excellent programming. They are partially funded by the Federal Government, partially funded by large institutions and, as the saying at the end of every show goes, partially funded by “listeners like you.” Well, me, in my case.

I give to my local PBS station annually. I give a little more (in some years) when they can’t quite seem to close the budget gap. But I didn’t respond to the “Please give us more money” email in my inbox yesterday morning. Well, I deleted it—I guess that’s a response.

I did give a donation in response to a request from the University of Pittsburgh. They were asking for a donation to the Pitt Pantry, a food bank for students. That seemed more in keeping with the original intent of Giving Tuesday.

This post is part of Linda G. Hill’s fun weekly series One-Liner Wednesday. If you have a one-liner, and would like to join in on the fun, you can follow this link to participate and to see the one-liners from the other participants.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  2. I wish you weren’t so right! It just doesn’t stop. It’s like that perpetual Going-Out-Of-Business sale. So I take refuge in your photos, where there seems to be peace. Needless to say, I love the image of the trestle, always my favorite. No. Wait. The Christmas-light water drips. No. The snow on the leaves. Yes, those three are my favorite. But there’s peace in all of these photos. Much needed. Thank you!

    1. Those are three of my favorites, too. Your comment made me laugh. For the longest time, as we drove home from church, we’d come to an intersection with a main road and almost always had to stop. Every week, the furniture store diagonally across was having a different variety of going out of business sale – last chance – everything must go – closing our doors – on and on and on.

    1. We do donate, and I watch a lot of shows, but this time, it felt like they were asking me to buy pizza for the people answering the phones. I mean “You’re already running a pledge drive!”

  5. Yes, Giving Tuesday has gone off the tracks, and the number of ‘sale’ emails is beyond ridiculous. Now to something that doesn’t raise my BP or drain my wallet – photos. I love the branch with the drops and the flag. May she rest in peace. Happy Wednesday!

    1. My inbox this morning had “There’s Still Time” emails for everything: Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday.

I spent so much time standing on our neighbor’s yard trying to get those drops into focus, I was wondering if she was going come out and ask me what I was doing.

Methinks they should change the name from “ Giving Tuesday” to “Gouging Tuesday”! Here’s a thought. If these companies stopped their incessant advertising on all the media and internet, they could maintain the needy quite nicely with all those millions not being spent on advertising!

The raindrop Christmas lights are so pretty. At least that night owl bunny proved your sensor lights are working just fine!

I love the leaf impressions in the sidewalk. The cigarette butt not so much!

Old Glory proudly flying under that magnificent blue sky is a wonderful tribute to Rosalynn Carter. May she Rest In Peace….and may we all learn to live in peace.

Stay warm Dan. We got a coating of snow. That’s it for me. I’m already done with snow!😂 Ginger

    1. Already done with snow? Oh Ginger, you can’t be done until we’ve had a pile of it. Now, I hope I didn’t jinx us.

I do like your idea for a name change. I was in the grocery before Thanksgiving. I had a pile of stuff I was buying for the Cub Scouts or Post Office, (who knows anymore) food drive where you fill a bag an put it out for collection. On top of that, the cashier asked me if I wanted to donate $5 to their food drive!

The night owl bunny seems to like turning those lights on. Or maybe he’s going to ask me to move the sensor. I’ve tried to get a picture, but I’m shooting through the screen and it never comes out well.

That flag is the biggest one around here, so I tend to go there for a half staff photo.

Stay warm, Ginger. Maybe we should start “Treat Yourself Thursday”

    1. I forgot Small Business Saturday, Lois. That one is often a bit of a scam as well. A few years ago, American Express was championing that, even sending a list of merchants where I could get a $10 statement credit. I used the card in a couple restaurants with no trouble. I went to use it at a local hardware store and the guy told me that the merchant has to pay into the credit. I stopped using that card during that period.

I’m glad you like the pictures.

  16. Great one-liner, Dan. There are a couple veteran organizations that I support, and the funds go 100% to serving the vets (homes, medical care). No administrative cuts. A church-related group used to ask for money, but when I checked them out, and discovered their CEO made over $400,000/year, I wrote them. I explained that I could solve their financial problems. Fire the CEO and hire someone who believed in the cause. I’ve never heard back from them, and they don’t harass me anymore. 😊

  17. All kinds of great photos Dan. Love the multiple water drop images. As for the triple crown of raiding our wallets I always look at it as if I am not giving anything at all I might want to consider these options. The reality is we keep a list of our donations and the time of year we make each donation. If the the triple crown requests come in ahead of schedule well that is their problem not mine. Not my monkeys.

  18. All the stores hitting my inbox with pleas for Giving is annoying. They’re using the wrong word…it should be Spend Tuesday for them! Only one plea was from a real charity that hit my inbox. So I did the same and hit delete on all the store ads. I’m hanging onto my wallet. 😀

I love seeing the trestle bridge, and those rain drops are so cool!

    1. I rarely give when asked to. I like to research and give on my own. The Pitt Pantry isn’t something I can usually designate my annual gift toward, so I gave yesterday. 100% to the pantry, if they were telling the truth.

I’m glad you like those photos.

  21. I agree with you! Everywhere I look somebody’s got their hand out looking for more money. Some of the blogs I follow asked me to buy them a cup of coffee or fund some thing. There are charities I support religiously and I’m getting annoyed. I only have so much money and I give us generously as I can but too many these ads make me feel embarrassed but I don’t give more. Isn’t that ridiculous. I know charities need more but I should not feel ashamed.

  29. There’s nothing left now – oh ya, Christmas itself. I got the same PBS plea in my inbox Dan. I stream “All Creatures Great and Small” by PBS on my computer as I cancelled my cable years ago, so I subscribe to their advance program notices. They soon will have the fourth year of that six-week series which begins in January. I did not give to my Detroit PBS station either, choosing Michigan Duck Rescue and Sanctuary and the Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary, both which do a lot for rescuing abandoned or dumped waterfowl, or rehoming senior dogs, respectively – neither gets a lot of press. I am turned off by non-profits who send out constant mail, especially “gifts” – they are spending the money they were clamoring for to keep their organization afloat. I liked your photos, especially the icy droplets which do look like ornaments. Sad to think for whom the nation’s flags will fly at half staff next … sadly it might be Mrs. Carter’s long-time soulmate.

    1. We don’t give to the CT PBS station in our area, Linda, rather the one in MA that we are actually closer to. They’re just as bad, but they have some original programs that focus on the local area. I like that.

The charities you’ve chose seem like good ones. It’s often the ones you don’t hear about doing the best work.

I have to agree, I think Jimmy Carter will be joining Rosalyn soon. Maybe he’ll surprise us.

      1. I like the local programming too Dan – sometimes they focus on events on the Detroit River. The big charities have corporate donors so it’s nice to pick charities that you can see the results from your donation.

  30. I’m with you, Dan. We give to a number of places but I try to do it when they offer matching gifts and not when I’m “supposed to.” Then there’s the whole Black Friday thing which is such a farce. I remember when it was actually on Friday during normal business hours. Next it began early in the morning, then the night before. Now the creep has continued and it’s not only days prior to Friday, but days after. I find it totally annoying and tend to ignore it completely. It’s all about buying.

  35. Loving the pictures, as always. I also delete all of what my grandfather used to call “gimmee money” mail and email. I give what I can, when I can, where I can. I do kind of appreciate the emails, though, because sometimes I learn about a place I want to support that I didn’t know about, like APOPO Hero Rats, who search for bombs, mines, and buried survivors. I also give to my university’s pantry. I survived too often on dried noodles to want anybody else to have to.
