We are at the end of a quiet week and David and I are going to kick back, well, not really, barstools don’t allow for much of that, and relax. Before we move too far into our rest, let’s give a round of applause to Linda G. Hill for hitting the 50,000 word mark in her 2023 NaNoWriMo effort. According to Linda, a new series has begun. She also gave us a new Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt.

If we were having a beer, you’d have an odd question, at least Cheryl thinks so.

“Dan, what happened to the caution tape?”

“Hey guys, David, what on earth are you talking about? Did you guys drive through a construction site on your way here?”

“No, Cheryl, for the past several weeks…”

“Whoa, hold up. If this story is spread over several weeks, I have to pass. Are you going to have your usual beverages?”

“Yes. Well, that is, I’ll have a John Howell’s Special. Dan?”

“I’ll have a Modelo.”

“OK, I’ll be right back.”

“So, Dan, what did happen to the caution tape?”

“I’m not sure I understand, David.”

“Your ramp. There used to be caution tape down one side.”

“Oh, the railing. We removed the railing ‘system’ section that was on the ramp and replaced it with a handrail—matching the one on the other side.”

“Here you go boys. Bourbon, a snifter of seltzer and a glass of ice. Dan, here’s your beer.”

“Don’t sound so disappointed, Cheryl. Not everyone can match David’s sense of the absurd.”

“Absurd? Dan, if I understand what you just said, you took down a railing in order to put up a railing.”

“You’re not listening, David. I took down a decorative railing system and replaced it with a functional handrail.”

“Couldn’t you have added the handrail to the railing system?”

“That was the original plan. But we grew less and less happy with that railing the longer it was there.”

“Why? I mean it looked pretty good.”

“First off, the support posts were loose. I tightened them several times, but they kept loosening.”

“I’m beginning to think I should have paid attention to ‘Caution’ and not started this conversation. I assume there’s a second thing.”

“Yes. Being on the north side, it was a veritable petri dish for algae. I had to power wash thirty balusters on all four sides, twice a year.”

“Are you done?”

“Almost, David. It also made it hard to shovel snow off the ramp.”

“But you have a snowblower.”

“The ramp is Trex, snowblowers not allowed, and…”

“OK, OK, Dan, I get it. But, if the support posts were too loose for the railing, what makes you think they’ll hold a handrail?”

“I secured them much better. Once…”

“Stop. I’m sure the handrail is secure. I don’t need to know how it got that way. I’m one of those people who gets out of bed depending on gravity to hold me to the floor without knowing why it wants to.”

“That’s everyone.”

“What?”

“We know how gravity works, but we don’t know why it works.”

“And, for the umpteenth time, we, at least I don’t care. It was a figure of speech.”

“You guys want another round, or would you like to push your blood pressure a little higher first?”

“Another round, Cheryl, and two orders of Teagan’s mushrooms.”

“I’ll put those right in.”

“Dan, since you’re retired, why didn’t you participate in NaNoWriMo?”

“Fifty-thousand words in one month? David, I’ve been working on my next novel since the end of September, and I’ve only written twelve-thousand words.”

“Twelve thousand words?”

“Well, I did write the first four thousand three times, but yeah.”

“I’d think you should be able to draw some confidence from projects like your railing/handrail conversion and apply it to writing.”

“They’re not interchangeable skill sets, David.”

“Confidence is a state of mind, my young friend, not an accounting of skills in inventory.”

“That’s quite profound, David.” .

“Actually, it’s the bourbon.”

I tried to include a slideshow of the D-I-Y work but WordPress would not cooperate.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  1. Thanks for sharing this idea. I saw this squirrel was eating the peanuts and later he is running on the deck .Anita

    1. We’ve been surprised by the critters using the ramp. We’ve seen one of the bunnies jump up onto the porch and run down the ramp.

  2. Thank you for the good start to my day! I LOL’d my way through this and am still enjoying residual chuckles. I know high snark when I read it. So inspiring! A great shot of the trestle. And I’m almost positive I see smiles on those squirrels.

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed this one, Maureen. I think the squirrels smile when they have their peanuts in hand. They certainly keep giving us opportunities to make them smile. You’ll see a lot of the trestle for the next few months. Hopefully I’ll get a photo with snow on it, maybe even a train in the snow. That would make me smile!

  4. Railings look nice. Does WordPress care that I look forward to each and every DIY project? :-) I’m also wondering why in their infinite wisdom they decided to change the ‘like’ section so now the like goes to the end instead of the beginning, and it is smaller. I wish they’d figure out how to delete an old post and include the photos not moving the likes around. :-) Have a good weekend, and I don’t think either of us will have to move any snow until maybe Monday for us.

    1. I will try to post the DIY slide show with either Monday’s or Wednesday’s post. I need to figure out what’s wrong. Each time I scheduled this post, it ended with an error. I assumed I had too many pictures or a bad connection. I removed the slide show and it seemed to work. Now I’m not convinced that was the problem.

  5. That mailbox squirrel kills me every time. I think you should forgo getting mail and make him a little house…

    1. We’ve scanned several ideas for squirrel houses. About 35 years ago, we had a squirrel gazebo. It was about 2′ square, with a roof, and was mounted on a post about 2′ off the ground. The roof had a door, through which we could load peanuts. They could go up little ladders on each of two sides, take a peanut and go.

  8. I’m with David…adult refreshment does equate to a bit of confidence. It’s important to know, however, when confidence turns to silliness (that’s okay too) and then stupidity (not okay). I’m glad you secured the hand railing, Dan, so you and the Editor and guests can be safe going up and down the ramp. It’s important when the snow flies.

Have an awesome Saturday and weekend!

    1. Thanks Mary. David being silly – now there’s a concept I should explore some day. The handrail is important, as Trex can be slippery when wet. We actually tape the ramp off if its icy, like during freezing rain.

I hope you have a great weekend!

David was in fine form today! Give him another bourbon!

The ramp, rails and posts look great. Solidly functional. The beggar on the mailbox is quite confident you will hand-deliver his peanuts.

The photo of the plane and the moon….it looks like the plane is hauling a ginormous white balloon. I love it!

The trestle is such a pretty sight.

Your decorated tree looks great. But I think the squirrels would have approved if you had strung several yards of peanuts around the tree! Just sayin’……

Old Glory is looking good, as always.

Hope today ends a nice week and tomorrow begins an even better one. Ginger

    1. Thanks Ginger. I wonder if they’d like a string of popcorn. We grew corn one year, and they certainly enjoyed eating it off the cobs. Before I heard that plane, I hadn’t even noticed the moon. It was washed out in the bright sky.

The trestle will be a common sight here during the winter. Then it will disappear again.

Maybe we’ll put little gift boxes of peanuts under that tree ;-)

I hope you have a great weekend and a wonderful week ahead. David thanks you for the bourbon.

Freezing here – we’ve had sun by the seaside … but still freezing … now the freezing fog has rolled down – looks very chilly out there! Cheers Hilary

    1. Haha – Heather, you must have an abundance of confidence to strike out on a hike like you did. Our squirrels are ell fed, but they forage in the yard as well. We put feed out for birds, too and the squirrels steal some of that.

  27. “It’s Actually the Bourbon” might be a good title for a mini-coffee table book you could add to your to-be-written list that captures all the chuckle-generating sayings. Well done on the railings, that’ll make it easier for the squirrels to jump off the deck and onto the decorated tree while they wait for peanuts to arrive. Have they ever eaten the wires on the lights? We’ve had rabbits do that! As you’ve said though, the new railings will make it much easier to clean off the ramp! 🥳🎉😊

    1. Once, when I strung lights in a maple tree that we had, the squirrels destroyed them. I wish I had a video of the squirrels jumping from one post to another. That was the other problem with the railing system. Between the squirrels and the birds, you wouldn’t always want to grab the top rail ;-)

      1. I think of Christmas Vacation movie when it comes to critters in trees. It is fun to watch squirrels on the move, they are surprisingly clever. I know what you mean…our deck furniture with our frequently visited deck bird feeder will need a serious cleaning come spring! 🙄
