“Why isn’t there a rhyming phrase that means the opposite of easy-peasy?”

That’s it, that’s my entry for Linda G. Hill’s One Liner Wednesday. It you’re interested in what’s going on, continue reading. If not, skip to whatever gallery I was able to work with.

Our weather

For the past month or so, I’ve been having a problem scheduling or updating posts. I’ve tried all the recommended solutions, to no avail, except to change my theme. So, I did that. I changed to one of the Full Site Editor themes that allegedly lets you add/subtract/tweak every element on your site. I promised to report, and here I am with an in-progress update. I’ll make it simple

I chose the theme Tenku – I thought I liked what the home page looked like, and I was informed in several emails with Happiness Engineers that I could change the things I wanted to change.

In my preview of Tenku, there was no sidebar. I asked about that, and the HE confirmed there was no sidebar but told me I could add one. He pointed me to a few tutorials that explained doing just that—adding a sidebar to your site.

I watched the video. I read and printed the tutorial. I made notes on the printed copy of all my current settings.

I activated the Tenku theme, and guess what? It includes a sidebar. I later discovered that that’s almost worse, because I have to change their idea of a sidebar as opposed to building mine.

Tenku uses the “Featured Image” in several places. One is on the main page, for both the most current blog post and the previous posts — I like that. It also uses them in the sidebar where I list previous posts — I don’t like that because they take too much room. I don’t normally set a featured image — the old theme defaulted to the first image on the page. This one doesn’t.

The galleries I’ve used in the past (and perhaps today) don’t spread out as far as the other content. That’s because I edited the width of the other content in the template. WordPress and lots of graphic gurus like an inordinate amount of whitespace I like enough whitespace to make the page easy to read, but not so much as to force you to scroll forever. Perhaps If Sergio Aragones was still alive, I could persuade him to add marginal drawings like he did for MAD Magazine. Short of that, I’d like to close the gap.

The sign says “God is dead”

Here’s the thing: I was able to close the gap on the body and the comments, but since the gallery isn’t part of the template, I can’t change it unless (hopefully this worked) I change it for each and every post. Since your theme applies to all blog posts, I can’t fix it for posts prior to this one. Sorry. I suppose I can add a gallery to the template, but I need to verify that I can delete it on posts where I don’t want it, but I don’t know what that would do to older posts.

My constantly in-your-face bit of marketing. Also doesn’t seem to fit. It has been squished by the new theme and the text popped out at the top and bottom. That is a Reusable Block — which I love. It means that whenever I add a book, it gets added everywhere. So, either I fix it so it doesn’t squish or I make a new one that I can add to the template. If I can add it to the template, I can resize it. I have to recreate it, rename it, and add it to the template, and delete the old one, or all prior posts will have it appear twice. Update (noon Wednesday): I think I was able to fix this!

The custom CSS I use was not brought into the new theme. I think I can add that.

So, in summary, the theme upgrade is not complete, has not been easy, and the helpful information offered by the Happiness Engineers hasn’t always been accurate. I will be attempting to fix these issues before Saturday.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  4. Hi Dan the new theme looks amazing! Shame it’s so complicated, I changed my theme last year and found that a fiddle but not as complicated as your change. I don’t think I could cope with all the work it would take to change again… I doubt I am savvy enough to deal with what you are dealing with.
One thing hasn’t changed you compression of a one Liner…. Or then again is it my comprehension of it . Have a great day 💜

I changed my theme less than two years ago, and I liked it. This time I thought I’d go for broke, knowing I could still reactivate the one I had. The theme I had before the last change had expired. The Happiness Engineers have been quick to answer questions, I just wish they all had the correct information.

  5. You’re brave, Dan, to boldly go with a change of theme! Well done and thanks for keeping us updated with what you are learning and the helpfulness of the Happiness Engineers. I view your posts on (android) mobile and use Jetpack. I do miss seeing your photo displays in their usual large size. Especially if there were any Bunnies. The lead art of God is dead is very funny!

    1. Thanks Babsje. I am still fiddling with the gallery options. The slide show works to display the images and the captions, but I don’t like the dull presentation on the blog page. The Classic gallery was so much better, but that’s almost impossible to use with this theme. I can build it, but I don’t seem to be able to edit it.

  6. Happy for you, sad for me, because no way could I tackle the theme change you just did. I have coffee in hand and a cookie, but it’s not enough caffeine and sugar to grasp the IT experience needed to do what you did. Same exact weather here with puddles everywhere. I haven’t even put gas in the snow blower yet. :-)

    1. I will admit that having spent 42 years in IT helped with this transition. It’s nowhere near done, but at least it’s working. I was expecting to make a minor repair on a rain gutter yesterday, but the fog never cleared and the light rain never stopped. We are socked in again today. They say the fog is just in the Connecticut River valley, but we are way above the river. I don’t know when we’ll see any snow :(

I don’t like all the things this theme “breaks” on my previous posts. I had no idea that that would happen. They aren’t show-stoppers, but I wish I could fix them.

    1. Thanks John. I won’t be too hard on the engineers, there are so many themes to choose from, I guess they can’t know them all. I would think that WordPress could give a better explanation of what each theme includes out of the box, as it were. I chatted with a few HEs, and they were all supportive, but if I had known the theme included a Sidebar, I would have asked different questions. I like what I have (will have) but it shouldn’t be this hard.

It was a bit startling seeing your blog with a new look even though I knew it was coming. 😂
I hope you get it all tweaked and customized so you’re template is set up and it’s just plug and play.

The drops and fog are lovely, and I disagree the pine needles were color too! I love green. 😀

    1. Ha! You’re right. I forgot about the evergreens. I don’t give them enough credit for carrying the entire weight of color during the winter.

I had no clue about the fact that the “Featured Image” would be slammed onto the header. I had hoped to keep my 13-yr-old photo of the steps on the Canal. I though that bit of continuity would help ease the transition. When I previewed this post, I was shocked!

  16. The blog looks wonderful, Dan. I admit I was a bit surprised to see the lovely photo first thing on your blog–but it, and all your photos, are beautiful. This theme is a nice one. Very clean-looking. I’m guessing all the white space does that. I really like it. But lemme tell you–there is no way I could ever do this. If I ever have to change my blog, I will be begging you to please make up a bogus blog, stay on the phone with me, and walk me all through the entire process. 🤣
A rhyming phrase for the opposite of easy peasy? I think it should be holy moly! Linda–please consider giving Dan bonus points for this. 😉

  17. Sorry you’ve been having issues yet you seem to handle them with great aplomb unlike I would (I’d grouse and whine about the block editor) and I’m sure the Happiness coaches hate it when I contact them-I’m convinced they speak in Yugoslavian at times. Some days technology seems to conspire against even the best intentions. Well done, Dan!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks. I worked with technology for over 40 years, so that helps. This took a bit to figure out, and the process is more tedious than I wish it were. I don’t think blogging should be this hard. There are many themes that are easier to configure. They don’t all take this level of effort.

      Liked by 1 person

  18. If you close the gap between the paragraphs you should perhaps indent the first line of the paragraph. There might be a css configuration for that. Nice photo with the drops of water trying to fall from the plant.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks Frank. That’s a good idea. I haven’t added the custom CSS I was using. One of those bits was to indent the whole paragraph. I think there is a property for indenting just the first line. That might be a nice look.

  22. Well, one naughty but maybe pithy phrase might include the first word ‘pretty’ and the next word to rhyme with it and imply not-easy-peasy…(‘persnitty’?)!

    1. That’s a good description, Teagan. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s coming along. I didn’t have much time today, but I did get my custom CSS installed and I added one to indent the first line of the paragraph. It’s slow progress, but progress. I need to get the sidebar looking the way I want, then I can relax.

I have been spending a week converting my old Corel Draw files to Adobe Illustrator with mixed success. I want to get rid of the Corel files and only keep Illustrator. Can’t afford to own both apps. Cortel let me rent the software doer under $40 for a month. So, I’d better get cracking. I’ve thousands of files to convert.

  26. Dan, your new theme looks fantastic. It looks so clean, but most of all, it makes your blog inviting to read. I’ve witnessed several bloggers go with FSE themes, and I have to say that it brings blogging into the 21st century. The Classic theme I’m using looks so outdated to the new theme you’re using.
I agree with what you said in another comment that a Happiness Engineer isn’t going to know everything about every theme. I think they do a splendid job.
