Welcome to the last Saturday of 2023. David and I are at the bar, getting our fill of bourbon, beer, mushrooms and football. Linda G. Hill has given us her last Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt and we’re going to try to work that in. I had hoped to have a minimal-length post for you, but — well, you’ll see. Anyway, the prompt:

Linda G. Hill

If we were having a beer, you’d have some questions about my blog.

“Happy New Year, Dan.”

“Happy New Year to you, too, David.”

“I’m surprised you tore yourself away from the Twilight Zone Marathon to stop for a beer. It did start today, didn’t it?”

“The one on SyFy did, and I haven’t really torn myself away. It’s playing on my phone.”

“You’re watching TV during our conversation?”

“Just for a few more minutes. ‘The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street’ is on, and I love that episode.”

“Oooh, so do I, let’s see.”

“You two are pathetic. You want me to put SyFy on one of the TVs?”

“That would be nice, Cheryl.”

“Okay, but there’s no sound, David.”

“Dan knows all the dialogue by heart.”

“Well, here’s your last John Howell’s Special of twenty-twenty-three. Dan, here’s your Modelo and I’ll put in an order of Teagan’s Mushrooms.”

“Cheers, David.”

“Cheers. In addition to being glued to the TV, I thought you might still be working on your blog theme. It seems every time I visit your site, it’s different.”

“It has been an ongoing process. People seem to like the new look, and I think I’ll be able to have it fully in place by the time Thursday Doors returns.”

“When is that again?”

“January eleventh.”

“Let’s see, you started on December twenty-sixth, and you hope to be done by January eleventh.  Now I know why so many bloggers are Themeaphobic.”

“Maybe just Blockaphobic, but I get your point.”

“So, the header is completely new. Are you going to try to get back to your ‘Curious Stairs’ photo — speaking of phobias.”

“What do you mean, David?”

“Those stairs go from the side of the railroad tracks to the edge of the Windsor Lock Canal. Who would ever use those, other than some ghoulish character carting his unsuspecting victims into the tunnel?”

“I guess I never thought of that.”

“Maybe it’s the Twilight Zone effect.”

“Well, the short answer is yes and no.”

“I hate that, Dan.”

“I know you do. I can still put that photo up there, but it won’t be there for every post. Posts have a ‘Featured Image’ which doesn’t have to be in the photo gallery. So, I can use whatever I like.”

“Speaking of galleries, have you found one you like?”

“Not really. But I can’t easily use the Classic Gallery. I mean, I can use it, but I can’t edit it very easily.”

“Otherwise, it looks like things are going well, Dan. What’s left to do?”

“I have to finish the Sidebar. It doesn’t support a feature I was using.”

“Which feature. As I recall, you had a lot of crap on that thing.”

“Thanks, David. Good to know you noticed. One of the bits of crap I put there was the badge for the challenge being addressed.”

“Like Linda’s SoSC thing?”

“Exactly.”

“That seemed like a lot of work anyway, Dan. I mean changing the sidebar for each post.”

“See, that’s the thing, David, I didn’t have to. That was all automatic. If the post was in the right category, the badge appeared.”

“Oh. And what, you can’t do that now?”

“Not the way I was doing it. But one of the Happiness Engineers gave me a workaround, and…”

“And you geeks love your workarounds.”

“I’m not sure it’s confined to us geeks.”

“Oh, it is, Dan. It surely is. Normal people hate workarounds. Normal people have workaroundaphobia.”

“You really think so?”

“Dan, using a workaround on your computer is like driving on the highway with that stupid donut spare tire.”

“I’m okay with the workaround, especially if it works.”

“That’s good. And when someone else tries to do it (or is forced to do it by the progress Bots), you’ll be there to help.”

“Progress Bots?”

“Yeah, the others of your ilk who seem to think that ‘good enough’ is never good enough.”

“My ilk?”

“No offense, Dan. I’d say ‘cohort’ but that was on someone’s list of words they wish people would stop using in the new year.”

“I rarely use that word, David, but I don’t use ‘ilk,’ either.”

“Look you two. Let’s not end the year with an argument. I have your next round, and these mushrooms.”

“You’re right, Cheryl. Here’s to the new year!”

David, Dan, Cheryl and Skippy all wish you a happy and healthy new year!

Note: I’m sorry, but this gallery style only shows the captions if you click on a photo and enter the slide show. I’m trying to figure out what gallery looks better. Your thoughts are welcome.

For those who can’t see the captions or enter the slideshow, Here they are:

  • 1) Sign – Do we really need this sign? Apparently, we do
  • 2) Train – On it’s way to the trestle over the CT River
  • 3) Food – We finally have a Mexican restaurant in our town
  • 4) Leaf shadow – I’m going with brontosaurus
  • 5) Smokey – You’re welcome, Smokey
  • 6) Single leaf – This guy might be here all winter
  • 7) Two leaves – Trapped in the hedge
  • 8) Pizza – The best part of grocery shopping around lunchtime is our store’s pizza
  • 9) Cards – I was not ready for this
  • 10 Cat – Farm store greeter
  • 11) Trestle – Trestle standing over high water
  • 12) 2 Drops – Fog and rain for the past five days
  • 13) Car – The sticker says “Frequent stops” Someone didn’t read it
  • 14) Bourbon – Willett Pot Still Reserve. A.K.A. John Howell’s Bourbon
  • 15) Multi-Drops – I love seeing this tree in the fog or after/during a light rain
  • 16) Flag – The flag at our grocer from a sunny day last week

The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  2. Good morning Dan and happy New Year to you and yours …plus everyone at the bar too.
I like the new look…. Having changed my blog theme last year I am with David and I am theme and blog changing phobic …I am okay with blocks and almost okay with jetpack….it’s a case of fingers crossed and flying blind in my case!
I like the gallery, I see I can comment on photos in …but I can’t find any captions.😁😁💜💜💜💜

    1. Thanks Willow, especially for the info on the gallery. I like the layout of the photos, but I don’t like forcing people into the slideshow to read the captions. If they don’t always show up there, then I’m not using it. They have so many gallery options, yet none seem to really work well :(

I am hoping that this is the last theme I need, at least for a long time. Of course that depends on WordPress making the new features available while still supporting the old ones.

Happy New Year, Willow to you and your family.

  8. For me, add “phobia” to anything having to do with a computer. The gallery for me has no captions, clicking on a photo does nothing, and when I hover over a photo I get three ghostly choices. I tried clicking on one and got what looked like editorial hooey on the side. Cropping? I think no. I hit the X in a hurry. Nope, not doin’ that again — heaven knows what I would lose. I love the photos, though. I also loved the bar talk. Thanks! I do hope you end up with things as you want them to start out your new year!

    1. Thanks for the information about the gallery. This one will not be used. I don’t know why it’s so hard for them to get a gallery that shows captions on the main page, or a slideshow that works. I also don’t know why it works for me but not for others. Oh well, time to move on from that. I’ll get this to a comfortable place – maybe not perfect, but comfortable.

      Happy New Year Maureen.

Great conversation at the bar today! Kudos for all the “ph” you used!

I am disappointed that I cannot enter the slide show. All I get is SHARE, ADD TO PHOTOS and COPY. I also can’t enlarge a photo! PHooey! Sigh. That doesn’t diminish my enjoyment seeing your photos though. 🤗

I’m assuming that beautiful cat is from where you buy your dairy. I would love to know the caption to the photo of the car!

  12. I like the format and photos, although the header photo seems a bit large. But don’t take my comment too serious as it is what YOU like and are happy with that counts.

I went into the Dollar Tree on Wednesday and although they had their Christmas things greatly reduced, they were already putting out Valentine’s Day decorations, cards, etc. Retailers can’t quite wait for one holiday to be over with (I’m still on Christmas time) before they start with another. It’s kind of crazy.

As I was walking with my neighbor late yesterday afternoon, we noticed many trees with dried leaves still hanging from the branches. Weird weather this year. No snow for Christmas and continuing above normal temps. Chance for snow Sunday morning, but I’ll believe it when I see it. Have a wonderful weekend, Dan!

    1. Thanks Mary. The header image is large. It’s on my list to see if I can shrink it some. I’d hate to see what happens if I had a portrait style photo, and I don’t want to have to start creating a Featured image for every post – feels like work.

It has been in the upper 40s with rain and fog, since Sunday night, here. I’m ready for some cold and snow.

We don’t really do anything for Valentine’s Day, so it’s a lot of wasted effort from my point of view. I guess it won’t be long before we see the Easter Bunny or a bunch of shamrocks.

I hope you enjoy ringing in the New Year. Ours will be a quiet time.

  15. I like that nowhere staircase, Dan. Things that spark the imagination have grown too few and far between these days. The new theme looks good, not too far removed from what you had before. I really miss my old theme from years ago when adding a slide show or video link via embed was easy peasy. I hope that phrase isn’t on David’s list. Lol But Ido agree with him on the workaround issue. I’m not lazy or incapable. I just prefer using those brain cells for writing. 😀I deal with enough technical difficulties just uploading and editing photos. Enjoy your marathon! I just love the one where Grandma Walton is terrorized by a mini Lost In Space robot. But my favorite is when the world is going to end, first by one extreme and the girl wakes only to find it is the other. Do not adjust your set…

  23. Your bar banter today is great, just like every Saturday. I am very happy with this version of the photo gallery! I like that it has fevered to the full size images. The one that had the images two abreast in miniature was too small for viewing on mobile with Jetpack, and having the captions overlaid on the tiny images obstructed the photos too much. But I suspect that my viewing preference may be an odd use case? So do whatever is easiest for you. That said, here it is lunch time and your pizza photo has conjured up more fond memories of Park Road Pizza in West Hartford! I have a hankering for pizza now and not a slice in sight. And that photo brought back the New Year’s Eve pizza delivery I ordered. When I opened the front door to receive the pizza, a bat flew in along side it. Not good with a one-year old daughter in the house. Calls to animal control ensued. What fun. Anyway Happy New Year’s to you and your family and the gang at the bar on Saturdays.

  26. The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street. Best TZ ep ever in my opinion. Brontosaurus leaves are the best! Happy New Year to you and yours, Dan!

    1. Thanks Bruce. For my last 15 years at work, I exited the highway at Maple Street. I always had to laugh.

Happy New Year, and all the best in 2024.

  27. Phun post, Dan! Phabulous and phantastic, just like the Twilight Zone. Hmm, we only have a Cheers marathon here.

  29. They gallery worked great for me. It had the captions and the arrow worked smoothly to move from slide to slide.
I see you got your featured image up, yeah! I hope you get the side bar worked out by 1/11/24. I have to prewrite that 2024 on some checks or I’ll be making lots of mistakes!

Happy New Year, Dan to you and the family!

    1. Thanks Deborah. I’m not sure why so many people are having trouble with this gallery, but I’m not likely to continue using it. I have to figure out which one works for everyone. I wish this wasn’t so hard.

The featured image is flexible. I won’t always be using this one, but this will rotate in from time to time. I’m pretty sure I’ll have this where I want it before Thursday Doors resumes. I have figured out a way to announce the link on Wednesday for the people who like to schedule their posts in advance.

      Happy New Year!

  30. 🥳🥂😅 Woohoo – way to work your way through updating your theme. I’m happy to report that I can comment, can backspace on my comment, and can scroll through the photos in the gallery, and I can see the captions on the photos in the gallery. I must admit though, the Brontosaurus photo looks like the Eiffel Tower to me. 😉🧐 Happy New Year to you and your family, Dan! May the Twilight Zone of odd things happening on your blog be gone for 2024 and beyond.

    1. Thanks Shelley. Eiffel Tower? Hmmm, possible, but I read it was closed due to striking workers 😉

      1. Oh, jeez, I hadn’t heard that so I stand corrected – it is definitely a Brontosaurus then! 😉😅

  31. Well, give me an alternate method and call me geek, because I love workarounds. Back in the early days of BBS-based web sites, I got mine to do something that my sysop said … “You aren’t supposed to be able to do that.” Score one for ignorance: I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to be able to, so I did. lol

    1. It’s great when workarounds work. It’s even better when they aren’t supposed to ;-)
