Here we are on the first Saturday of 2024. David and I are gearing up for a storm that might bring us a significant amount of snow. Of course, the weather folk are much better at telling us what happened yesterday than what might happen tomorrow. Still, it’s good to be prepared. Speaking of prepared, we are ready to tackle Linda G. Hill’s two-fisted prompt as she combines Stream of Consciousness Saturday with Just Jot January:

If we were having a beer, you’d be wondering about my drinking plans.

“Happy New Year, Dan.”

“Happy New Year, David. Is that a John Howell’s Special you’re drinking?”

“It is. Cheryl had to pop downstairs to change the keg, but you’ll have a cold Modelo in your hands pretty soon. That is, unless you’re doing Dry January.”

“Here’s your beer, Dan. Sorry about the head. When that settles down, I’ll pour a little more in.”

“Thanks Cheryl. I’m guessing you’re glad we’re not doing Dry January.”

“Makes no never mind to me. We have a nice array of mocktails on the drink menu.”

“Mocktails?”

“For the FOMO crowd, Dan. They don’t want to drink, but they still want to be out with the fun crowd.”

“I’m sorry, Cheryl. What’s FOMO?”

“It stands for ‘Fear of Missing Out,’ David. Trust me, it brings a lot of people into this bar for all kinds of occasions.”

“Dan, are you afraid that we’re missing out on something by coming to the bar early and leaving before the fun crowd arrives?”

“Not at all, David. I embrace JOMO – the Joy of Missing Out.”

“JOMO, I like that. Finally, an acronym I can latch onto.”

“Speaking of joy, Cheryl, did you hear how Skippy did last night? I heard he filled in for the star of that play.”

“He called, Dan. He was supposed to work today, but he had been out late celebrating. He did very well.”

“I’m glad. Sounds like he had a dose of just do it spirit, and it paid off.”

“And speaking of ‘just do it’ spirit, Dan, you and Cheryl both seem to be embracing Linda’s Just Jot January prompt. You’re certainly giving me a lot to read.”

“I hope we’re not boring you, David.”

“Not at all, Cheryl. I can honestly say that I’m enjoying your posts and I’m not sick of Dan’s yet.”

“Gee, thanks, David. That’s, um, quite the compliment.”

“You know I’m just joking, Dan. I have enjoyed the little bits you dribbled out about your new blog theme. That seems to be a hit.”

“Well, you might want to skip my post on Monday. I’m going to wrap up that explanation with a look at the pros and cons.”

“Thanks for the head’s up. I’ll pop in for the pictures.”

“I’ll leave a link for you to skip the text.”

“Another JOMO moment for me—thanks Dan.”

Note: As you can see, I’ve formally adopted the theme I had in place on Wednesday. It causes the fewest problems and it offers the captions in both the composite and slideshow views. For you iPad (and perhaps other tablets) users, I have an answer for you. If you get a menu like the one shown at the right instead of entering the slideshow when you press on a photo, you are pressing on the photo for too long. A short firm press will invoke the slideshow. A longer press will give you this menu. Also, if you don’t have arrow keys to advance, swipe the photos in the slideshow with your finger.

And, for those of you viewing on a phone or smaller tablet, if the captions are masking too much of the image, rotate your phone and view the gallery in landscape mode. I have shrunk the captions as much as I can, and I reduced the columns from three to two. It should be readable.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

And I’m with you on JOMO. We started frequenting bars and restaurants at weird hours during the first Covid to avoid crowds and discovered we liked it. Now we day drink and have late lunch/early dinner all the time.

    1. I only heard that term this week, Ruth. Some psychologist said we should “embrace the JOMO” instead of feeling bad. That advice rings true with me – always has.

    1. It’s funny, Liz. He is pretty large, and he’s not one of the ones in our yard. He does live in a small stand of oak trees. He must be good at foraging. I give him a peanut two or three times a week. JOMO is the way to go.

Beautiful shots of winter skies. The critters in the wood pile apparently are leaving instructions for you. They must think you’re DoorDash!

“The other squirrel that lives in that hole” looks like he can’t fit in that hole! Lol!

That’s an especially nice photo of Old Glory.

I just knew Skippy would ace his acting gig! 🤙

Happy snow blowing Dan. We’re as ready as we can be. I’m hoping the meteorologists are exaggerating the amount of accumulation. Be safe out there. Ginger💞

    1. I almost tagged myself as Flapdash, Ginger. They do seem to like having delivery service. The squirrels near the park live in a little stand of oak trees. I’m sure they stored quite a few nuts, but if they see me coming, they line up for a handout. I don’t feed them often, so their weight is due to good foraging.

Skippy had a good night on stage. Who knows where that will lead him. I think we’ll see more of him this year.

I think I’m ready for the snow. The forecast keeps changing, but the amount of snow is creeping upward. I hope you stay safe and warm.

I am so happy about Skippy! I hope he comes back to the bar soon to give us a blow-by-blow. David should have some choice comments about that. 😂 Have a great weekend, Dan.

    1. Thanks Lois. At least with having ruled out the theme, the Happiness Engineers are working on the problem I’ve been having. Other are having similar issues, so maybe they’ll find a solution. In any case, I do like this new theme, and I appreciate the feedback that has helped me getit right.

I think we’ll see more of Skippy, in and outside of the bar. Who knew? Have a great weekend.

  14. Yikes. Snowstorm huh? I wonder if my group in NE will be catching some of that. They’ve had very
little snow as of yet. I’m glad you’ve mastered your theme situation. I think it looks great. Now that we know Skippy can act, maybe he’ll put on a better show of bartending. Lol. Just kidding. He has a heart of gold, that one. I love your day’s coming and going photos, Dan. Glad David is enjoying my mini saga. JusJoJan is a fun event and I am determined to keep up. Stay warm!

    1. Thanks Cheryl. I guess we need to give Skippy a script for the bar. He will be hard to deal with now that he’s had a taste of success. This storm appears to be a nor’easter, not moving in off the plains.. These are always the biggest events we have, regardless of the season. I think we’re ready. I hope you have a nice weekend.

  15. First of all, I like the morning shots with the beautiful pink light, Dan. Since I took off a couple weeks in and around Christmas, I didn’t know you were contemplating a new theme, but I like it. Was it easy to switch?

I love JOMO! There are so many things I’m happy to miss. I don’t know if I’ll ever use the acronym, but I like what it represents. :-) And of course, hurrah for Skippy!!!! I’m not a fan of “Just do it” as Nike isn’t on my favorite company list. But that’s okay. You made it work.

Enjoy the weekend and hopefully the weather won’t get too bad.

    1. I’m glad you like the theme, Janet. It wasn’t hard, but I’d say it was tedious. Once I figured out everything that had to be done, it became a matter of how much to do at any one time. It was nice having a bit of a break. I still have some things I want to do, but nothing major.

I’m not a fan of Nike, but I felt compelled to reward Skippy’s fans for their years of support for that poor kid.

  16. We might get the first snow that sticks down in the valley today they’re saying.
Your walk was lovely. I see the squirrel has a large front opening now not just a hole to request peanuts. 😀
Which reminds me I better go check my bird feeder. The birds are going through a block of suet every 1.5 to two days lately. Stay warm!

    1. We just put out more bird seed. These guys know that a storm is coming. I think that squirrel has a full blown apartment in that tree. He/she goes in and you can’t see them if you look into the hole.

  17. Ha! I can relate to JOMO. I hope the weather doesn’t get too bad, Dan. Remember it’s okay to use that grand snow machine even if there isn’t a lot, if it saves your back or knees. One thing I do not miss is snow. Big hugs.

    1. I look forward to using the machine, Teagan. As soon as we have enough for the town to plow, I fire it up because they push a lot of snow onto our sidewalk, and the town requires that we clear it.

  21. Ah, the joy of missing out. I hadn’t thought of “flipping” FOMO like that, but it’s a pretty cool attitude to have. I’m glad I’m on Team JOMO. A lot less stressful…a lot more rewarding life. Hope your weather doesn’t impact things too much there. We may have actually gotten that long-awaited one inch of snow so we can officially say it snowed once again, but rain is already mixing in and I think by Monday we’ll be back to green grass and dry roads.

  26. There is something about that JOMO idea… Our snow started about an hour ago. It’s bloody cold here with a “feels like” temp of 3℉ – decided I didn’t really need to do a nighttime walk!
The new theme is nice and neat and easy to read. Lovely sky shots. Our kids start school only on Tuesday, the 9th – of course Monday is always a Ped(agogical) day…

      1. I did my first shovelling of the day. I guess maybe 4-6 inches? I know I’ll be going back out there as it has not stopped at all. I like to go out more than once so there is less to take care of. Thankfully, it is the soft and fluffy stuff that doesn’t weigh a tonne!
