Welcome to Thursday Doors! This is a weekly challenge for people who love doors and architecture to come together to admire and share their favorite door photos, drawings, or other images or stories from around the world. If you’d like to join us, simply create your own Thursday Doors post each (or any) week and then share a link to your post in the comments below, anytime between 12:01 am Thursday morning and Saturday noon (North American eastern time). If you like, you can add our badge to your post.

There are several things to cover in this post so please forgive the haphazard flow as I navigate through them.

First, let me mention that today’s JusJoJanuary prompt is “Olive” from Kaye. Check out her blog, you might like it. As for Olives, I am not a fan. I have tried them many times but I just can’t. So, I’m using Popeye’s girlfriend as my Jot. Olive Oyl, according to WikiPedia, was created by E. C. Segar in 1919 Segar’s comics featured several of her relatives (named after other oils), including her brother, Castor Oyl, their mother, Nana Oyl after “banana oil”, their father, Cole Oyl, and Castor’s estranged wife, Cylinda Oyl; more recently, Olive’s nieces Diesel Oyl and Violet Oyl have appeared in the cartoons. Also among Olive’s family are her two uncles, Otto (Auto) Oyl and intrepid explorer Lubry Kent Oyl…When Bobby London took over the strip from 1986 to 1992, he added the sultry blonde Sutra Oyl, Olive’s cousin, and Standard Oyl, a distant relative who was an extremely wealthy corporate magnate.

Next, we move onto the 2024 Thursday Doors Badge contest. We had eight wonderful entries for this year’s contest. As administrator, I don’t vote, and I have to be honest, I’m glad because I would have found it very hard to choose. The voting occurred between midnight Sunday to 6:00 PM U.S. Eastern time on Tuesday. After removing a couple votes from people who had not participated in Thursday Doors during the year, we have a winner. The badge entry from in primo piano photos won by a wide margin. Follow that link if you want to learn 101 things about our winner. Behind this entry was a four-way tie for second place. So, as we retire our 2023 badge (above) we welcome the badge for 2024 (below). You should be able to right-click and “save image as” to save a copy for you to use. If you want to link to this image, the link is: https://nofacilities.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/primo-piano-photos-tdbadge-2024.jpg

in primo piano – photos

Last but not least, I have doors to share, but they aren’t new. I’m sharing some of my favorite doors from 2023. I was going to gather a lot of new doors during the three week break, but the weather in our area was not conducive to photography.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  1. That’s interesting, Dan. I didn’t know about all of Olive Oyl’s relatives, especially about them all being different oils. * I’m in love with that turret house, and the brick one is right behind. * Congrats to Piano (couldn’t find the person’s name). It’s a truly beautiful image. Hugs.

    1. Thanks Teagan. I was surprised to find all of Olive Oyl’s relatives. They’re kinda quirky. They date from when she was the lead in a comic strip, not just Popeye’s girlfriend. Our new badge provider opted to be identified by blog URL – which is fine. Thanks to you and all the others for participating, I really am glad I didn’t have to vote. As for the turret house, wouldn’t you just love to be working on your WIP in one of those round rooms – I would.

  8. Happy New Year Dan, a lovely selection of great doors this week, and great to see some of them again. Of course painted utility boxes are always going to grab my attention, and there is something comforting about that barn.

I’m taking a little break from Italy for the moment, with these doors from a National Trust property, Cotehele in Cornwall from August last year: https://scooj.org/2024/01/11/thursday-doors-11-january-2024-cotehele-cornwall/#Cornwall#Cotehele

I’m probably going to burn in hell now, but I couldn’t help but laugh at Beeman, and the pyramid mausoleum is way cool.

I am glad you liked the look back at 2023. I would like to be sitting at my desk inside one of the round rooms of that turret.

  29. You have lots of good doors today, Dan. The power doors grabbed my attention immediately and I like the River Styx door. The one next to it, “Wood”, amused me because it’s the family name as well as what the door appears to be made of and if not wood, it’s amusing because of the difference rather than the sameness. :-) Just how my mind works. I like the winning badge, too, but I agree that it was difficult to choose.

    1. Thanks Janet. It was hard to choose, but this one stood out to a lot of people. I like it, but I am glad I didn’t have to choose. Our laughter at the door in the cemetery was inappropriate, but we couldn’t help ourselves. At least we were alone.

There was another tombstone in that cemetery that was funny. It was shaped like a bench, and the family name was “Sit” :-)

      Like

      1. Why is it inappropriate to laugh in a cemetery? If you’re laughing in delight over someone’s death, that would be different, at least to me.

  32. You know I love the cemetery doors, Dan. You might have to build an igloo with a door! 🙂Congrats to the winner. All the doors were great but this one just beckoned me in. As for olives. Never been a martini drinker except for any of the dozen new versions, but I have developed an appreciation for good black olives on pizza or a nice charcuterie board. Along with the wine I only drink on those occasions. The pizza? No,no,no. Beer it is! 😂

    1. I can’t imagine the cost of those tombs, Cheryl. I think I’ll be fine with a simple headstone. My wife and daughter love black olives on pizza, but we always got them on the side. Hmm – both of them hearken back to my youth. Today I have a contribution for this site from my Wordless Wednesday post. 1. Thanks Mae. My wife and daughter both love olives, but I just can’t do it. Sorry.

    1. Thanks Jan. I appreciate the support of the people who entered the contest. The regular Thursday Door players have chosen the badge they want to wear, and I think it’s a good choice. Thanks for stopping by,

  51. Thought I’d pop back this morning, Dan. I was still feeling very bleary-eyed yesterday and didn’t take in half of the above. I love the Olive Oyl saga, and had no idea about her extended family, and the new logo is great. Off to visit those 2 blogs now and a few others. Have a good weekend!

  52. Great doors Dan! I love the building with the tower, almost like a rapunzel type tower. I completely forgot you were returning today so I will participate next week and have saved the new logo, nice picture!

  57. A wonderful collection of your favorite doors, Dan! It’s hard to pick a special one, but I really do like the house with the “rick work.” I’m late as usual, so sorry, but here’s my entry. Take care!
