Welcome to the bar, where they’re using their outdoor cooler to keep the beer from freezing but Cheryl has it reasonably toasty inside. David and I have stopped in for a chat and some adult beverages…and maybe some mushrooms. We’re going to try to dispense with Linda G. Hill’s combo Stream of Consciousness Saturday and JusJoJan prompt while we relax:

Linda G. Hill

If we were having a beer, you’d want to catch up on a quiet week.

“Hello my friend.”

“Hello David. How are you this sub-freezing day?”

“I am cold, Dan. I haven’t been out much this week, and my car actually creaked as I got in—don’t go there—and again as I started moving.”

“I’ve been out a few times, but I know what you mean about getting into that cold car.”

“Hi guys. It’s times like this I wish we sold coffee, but I’ve got bourbon and beer. If you’re cold, I can always Irish-up a cup of instant cocoa.”

“A John Howell’s Special for me, Cheryl. I might not need the glass of ice, but I’ll take the standard setup.”

“Dan?”

“A cold beer is amazingly refreshing on a cold day, Cheryl. It’s like having clam chowder in July.”

“So, what did you do this week, Dan. I assume you worked inside.”

“I did spend several hours redesigning and rewriting the script I use to gather the information for the Sunday Recap of Thursday Doors.”

“Hmmm, redesign—geek stuff. Rewrite—geek stuff on steroids. Can you fast-forward to the end of that story?”

“Sure. I am once again able to generate the table used in the recap. In fact, it’s now even easier than it was.”

“That’s great, Dan. I understand you couldn’t keep doing that by hand.”

“Do you want to know what the problem was, or how I solved it?”

“No, not really. Did you do any work outside?”

“I cleared the snow and ice we got on Tuesday, and while doing that, a bolt stripped on my snowblower. So, I fixed that on Wednesday.”

“How does a bolt strip?”

“It’s the bolt that holds the support bracket for the crank that turns the chute. So in addition to the normal vibration, it get vibration from the crank. That combination makes it get loose.”

“Then you tighten it. Over time, the loosening and tightening wear on the bolt—amiright?”

“Very good, David! You are exactly right.”

“Did you replace the bolt?”

“Yeah. The dealer is right in town and he had one in stock. Took about forty-five minutes.”

“Anything else done in the cold?”

“I repaired a couple frayed cables for my iPhone.”

“I’ve thrown out several of those. How do you repair them?”

“Heat-shrink tubing.”

“No, I thought of that. There isn’t any size tubing that goes over the jack and shrinks down to the size of the wire.”

“That’s true, David. So, I slit several pieces of smaller tubing and built up the cable to the point where I could shrink a large piece over them and the cable.”

“That was a great idea. How many layers did it take?”

“Two small, one medium and the final top layer.”

“Ok, now I have one last question.”

“Hold up, David. I have two questions. One, do you guys want another round. Two, do you want anything to eat?”

“Another round for sure. I saw Dan’s car at Skooter’s, so I’m not sure about food.”

“Dan???? Cheating on me?”

“I had a burger and a dog. I didn’t have breakfast. But I could eat some of Teagan’s mushrooms.”

“Okay. Beer, bourbon and one order of mushrooms.”

“Now, Dan. What about that hunk of wood you bought. What the heck are you going to make out of that?”

“David, you have to understand…”

“Stop.”

“What?”

“When you say, ‘David you have to understand,’ you’re getting ready to play the LP version. I want the forty-five version. Start, finish, cut to commercial.”

“Here’s your bourbon, David. You’re lucky Skippy isn’t working today. He’d never understand that reference.”

“I guess I’m showing my age, Cheryl, but Dan understands.”

“I do. The piece of wood isn’t big enough to be something, but it’s big enough to be the door of something.”

“The door of something? Like what?”

“I’m thinking of a corner cabinet. If I hollow out the back of that piece of wood, I can curve the shelves out to fill the void. It will be deceptive from the outside.”

“So, you could put something in it that’s curved and bulges out at the bottom.”

“Possibly.”

“Like a bottle of John Howell’s Bourbon.”

“Exactly.”

  1. Thanks for the laughs Dan…”the LP version versus the 45″ LOL…
The squirrels do look ready for another round of peanuts. Great idea for the hidden corner cabinet! Have a great day. Looks like you had your work cut out with all that snow. Well done!

    1. Thanks Suzette. The squirrels have been begging up a storm in this cold weather, even when I’ve been out working on the snow removal. Once it turns to ice, I try to keep after it, as it’s so dangerous. I’m not sure I can get this cabinet done the way I imagine it, but the hunk of wood only cost $6.50, so…

I hope you have a great weekend.

  3. “Geek stuff on steroids.” The bar conversation never disappoints. Obviously the squirrels are never disappointed either; they pop up like toast, just knowing a good meal is coming. The trestle, imposing as ever, seems to look colder in ice than in snow. Winter sure came with a thump this year.

    1. It looks like winter is coming in short strong bursts this year. We’ll be back in the high 30s and 40s next week. It’s 12°f (-11°c) this morning. I’m not walking, and we have peanuts at the ready. Stay warm, Maureen and have a nice weekend.

I’ve never seen ashes on snow. Is it supposed to melt or just act like sand?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I think act like sand. The steel mills in Pittsburgh (in the 50s and 60s) gave ashes to towns that wanted to used them. We referred to the varying consistency product as cinders. Public Works crews would drive around, shoveling them out of a truck onto the road. The worst part was they would make the snow banks black. The second worst part is they were more corrosive than salt, so your car rotted.

I walk in the street when I get to this house (on a corner no less) because the stuff gets up in the treads of my boots and stays there until I track it into the house.

  5. The food looks outstanding, and I got the LP vs the 45 but then I should. :-) Nice piece of wood and interesting project. Before I wish you a happy weekend, I need to ask a WordPress question. At one point recently didn’t you have trouble scheduling a post? All of a sudden scheduling isn’t an option for me so I wondered if you figured out how to work around it without code. :-) Thanks in advance.

    1. I was having problems. I did have the “Schedule” button, but is never stopped “spinning.” The HEs gave me a workaround which was to Disable “Hide related content after posts” in the Reading sub-menu under the Settings menu in the Admin panel.

I hope you have a happy weekend, as well.

  8. I followed everything, which caused me to look in the mirror. 😳 They now make heat tubes for the iPhone charger cords. I just saw an ad for them. Your photos made me feel at home cause it is 24 degrees here this morning. Thanks you for the link, and wishing you a super weekend, Dan.

    1. Good to know about the heat tubes. I actually think I have one tube that will shrink down far enough, but this method is working. Of course, I can only imagine the Apple Designers cringing at the idea of a black bit of tubing over their precious white cable. We were at 12 degrees this morning. It will get colder tonight, but warmer days are coming next week. Stay warm, John.

  10. Brrrrr…. We got 10 inches of the white stuff. Twice what they predicted. Two miles south of us at CLE airport they got 4.5 inches. Lake effect snow is always a surprise. Kinda like that squirrel who is holding onto his new year resolution to meet you at the door for peanuts… Happy Saturday Dan

    1. It’s a small burger, Cheryl – 2oz, but I love the simplicity of that compared to the giant burgers most places serve these days. Toasted bun, lettuce, tomato, cheese, mayo and I add raw onions. Go with the Irish! I hope you have a great weekend.

The river looks lovely and so does the trestle bridge. Out back we’ve got the lake starting to form. It’s been cold and warm here so the snow in the mountains melts a bit and makes it way down here filling in the marsh in places. We’re getting warmer again next week after the storm that’s supposed to blow in today.

I’m curious and looking forward to seeing what you do with that wood. Have a great week-end and stay warm!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I’m glad you liked that, Deborah. I don’t know what made me think about it. The river looks cold, and it will get a little colder before it warms up. I doubt it will freeze over. That takes about two weeks below freezing, and we will stop at one. If I am able to move forward with the cabinet, I’ll post some in-progress pictures. Stay safe and warm in this crazy winter of freeze-thaw cycles.

Great bar banter today! I more than remember 45’s and 78’s. The record shop I went to had several booths in it where you took the record in, closed the door, and listened to it before purchasing. This ensured the record wasn’t damaged and that it was the record you wanted. Some outstanding songs on those vinyl records!

Yes, freezing here too. The squirrels and birds have increased appetites, and we’re going through peanuts like crazy…..also suet and a variety of wild bird seeds.

I remember neighbors using ashes on their sidewalks/driveways. Awful dirty mess though! I’m amazed at how many people dutifully clean their sidewalks of snow, but never use sand or ice melt so you can actually walk on it!

That one-squirrel-welcoming-committee would break my heart if I saw him! He looks so pathetic!

That’s a very interesting idea you have for that piece of wood. I have no doubt you will find a way to make it happen!

Old Glory looks beautiful even in these temperatures!

Hope you and the Editor can stay warm and dry. A few warmer days next week. Woohoo!

    1. Thanks Ginger. When I saw that squirrel, I felt like I was late. I found a triple-peanut in my pocket and tossed it to him. I wonder if he practices that look. They been eating up a storm, them and the birds. But with the ground covered, they really don’t have much to feed on.

I remember weekly trips to the record store, but by the time I was buying, it was LPs 3 for $10 at Brother George’s. My cousin told me about those booths. She had a pile of 45s.

The ashes are awful. I end up walking in the street to avoid tracking the stuff into the house.

I think I can hollow out that hunk of wood and make it into a door. The tricky part will be making the cabinet and fitting it with hinges.

Stay warm. It looks like we have one more bitter cold morning to get through.
