It’s Saturday. It’s been dry all week with cold mornings and spring-warm days. David and I are at the bar with a week’s worth of catching up to do. Along the way, we’ll enjoy an adult beverage and work at Linda G. Hill’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt:

Stream of Consciousness Saturday

If we were having a beer, we’d be in for a surprise.

“Hey guys. Can I get you your usual drinks?”

“Yes, Cheryl. It’s the last Saturday in April. I think we should drink to that.”

“You make it sound like we’d drink to anything, David.”

“Not so, Dan, but you’ve ignored a lot of good days on your blog.”

“I know, but I’ve been at this so long, I think I’ve touched on all of those before.”

“Still, Tax day? Passover? Earth Day? Three biggies.”

“And calendar day.”

“What?”

“Calendar day. The day on which may page-a-day calendar’s tabs are exposed and can hold a page if I accidentally tear two off.”

“And this tragic event happens so often that you celebrate those little tabs?”

“Let’s just say it happens often enough that I notice.”

“I hate to think about a page floating aimlessly in February.”

“I put a paperclip on it.”

“Here you go. A glass of John Howell’s Bourbon, a snifter of seltzer and a glass of ice. And a beer for Dan. Dan, I think you might want to ramp this up a notch. I know you like bourbon.”

“Shush, Cheryl. He likes his beer. Don’t make him feel like it’s not worthy.”

“You’re only saying that because you’re paying today, David.”

“That has nothing to do with it. It’s just that beer is the traditional beverage for Calendar Day. Or so I’ve heard.”

“Then why are you having bourbon?”

“I don’t have a page-a-day calendar. I celebrated on New Year’s Day when I hung my new calendar.”

“I see. Let me know if you guys want to order some food.”

“Cheryl, before you leave us…”

“Yes, Dan?”

“How did Skippy do at his audition?”

“Oh! I forgot to tell you. He got the part. He’s in the show.”

“Which part, Cheryl? The play was ‘You Can’t Take it with You,’ right?”

“Yes, David. It’s at a theater in New Haven, and Skippy will be playing the part of Paul Sycamore.”

“Isn’t that the lead character?”

“No, that’s Penelope Sycamore. Alas, Skippy doesn’t have the right parts for that part.”

“There’s a male lead in that play, Cheryl. At least there was one in the movie.”

“David, you’re thinking of Martin Vanderhof. He’s the grandfather. That might be a stretch for Skippy.”

“Why, he must have a grandfather or two to study.”

“You guys. Skippy is perfect for the part of Paul Sycamore. I looked it up. The character is described as being a youthful, engaging, easygoing tinkerer. He’s handy, enthusiastic, easygoing and charming.”

“Handy? Skippy?”

“You’ve only seen him behind the bar, David. He was the one who figured out how to repair the icemaker when it jammed with ice.”

“Well, when the show starts, I think we’ll have to drive down to New Haven and take in a performance.”

“They’ll be in rehearsals for a month, Dan. The owner here set him up with a friend who owns a bar down there. Skippy is working part-time a block from the theater.”

“Is he coming back here after the play finishes its run?”

“No, David. He wants to stay in New Haven. He’s a two-hour train ride from Manhattan. He’s hoping to get an agent and audition for some plays in New York.”

“So, are they hiring a replacement, or are you back here every weekend?”

“Oh, they’re hiring a replacement. I’m not working every weekend just because a star is born.”

Four years ago, Teagan R. Geneviene was working on a serial story called Brother Love. It was my pleasure to provide her with images that she used as writing prompts. Later, she turned that into a book. When I wanted a song to accompany today’s prompt, I couldn’t think of a better one than Neil Diamond – Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show.

And finally, my own shameless self-promotion.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  1. Well done, Skippy for getting the part! Thanks for the Neil Diamond song. I’ve always liked that one.

    1. Skippy is on his way up. I hope his fans appreciate the growth of his character. I always like Neil Diamond, and that was the perfect song for today.

  2. Love the @#@* cartoon. Spring is there. My favourite Neil Diamond song. A mates brother had the 45 we played that so much. I can sing all the words still 👍😀

    1. I’m glad you liked the cartoon. I remember a few youth rallies at our church when I was growing up, it wasn’t Brother Love, but I understand those lyrics.

    2. Brian, the story Dan mentioned was “inspired” by the song, but I went off the rails pretty quick — except for a few scenes that brought in the lyrics. The main one is at this link. If you scroll down there’s a snippet I narrated.

  4. That Sand Cherry shot is a beauty! I’d never heard of it so I had to look it up, of course. (Google gets quite a workout here.) And now Skippy is gone from the bar. Wow. Will we find him in another book sometime? I bet a lot of your readers are wishing him luck! You know we’re going to have to hear how he’s doing!

    1. You never know where that young man might turn up, Maureen. I know a lot of people are wishing him a successful career. Maybe he’ll come back and visit.

The sand cherries are funny. We bought them over 20 years ago. We were told they would get quite large, but that they’d only last about 10-15 years. They never grew much beyond chest high, and they don’t seem like they’re going anywhere. The blossoms are lovely.

    1. We try, Judy. It seems everyone around us is cutting down trees and spraying their lawns with pesticides and weed killers. There aren’t many places for these guys to live or find food. I think ours is the only birdbath for 5-6 houses in every direction. We had to take down some trees that were too weak and too tall, but we planted more than we took down. I wish they grew faster, although the birds and squirrels are starting to sit in them now.

  6. I’ve never heard of bugle weed but it’s lovely.
Not as lovely as all those baby bunnies though!

    1. I think it has another name, as well. It only blooms in late spring, but the bees love it. My wife took the baby bunny pictures for you (she’s up and out earlier than I am). They won’t be small for long.

Congratulations to Skippy! But I’m sad he won’t be at the bar any more. He has found his niche and he should pursue it. Curious about his replacement. I like the idea that we might have a say in it.

Love those baby bunnies. Their cousins are romping around here. Soooo cute!

I’m quite familiar with frozen birdbaths. Even this morning there was a thin layer of ice!

The sand cherries are beautiful and I’m happy to see that squirrel outside of his treehouse.

Old Glory looking proud as always.

Love this Neil Diamond song. Heck, I love Neil Diamond. He could sing the Yellow Pages (remember them?) and sell millions of copies!

Have a happy and carefree weekend Dan. Warmer temperatures coming our way.

    1. I’m laughing at Neil Diamond singing the Yellow Pages – I do remember them, Ginger. Sometimes, I wish we still had them. When I search for a store that sells something, I get a million answers from places all over the world.

I plan to give you guys a chance to vote on a new bartender. I have no idea how that’s going to work, but I’m willing to give it a shot.

Baby bunnies, frozen birdbaths, hungry birds and squirrels – we’ve been busy on these cold mornings.

For me, Neil Diamond never sang a bad song and couldn’t sing a song badly if he tried. Fantastic talent, and eye candy too!

  13. Love that pine needle image. The depth of field is fabulous. Congrats to Skippy. Break a leg, buddy! Last night just before midnight the dogs needed to go outside. It’d been raining, very unusual for Denver-snow is more likely, but anyway…I couldn’t help but notice a bunny trying to stay dry down the alley (luckily the dogs missed seeing it). Poor thing…I couldn’t help but feel badly as it seemed fairly drenched. I’m sure he/she was cleaning up bits from the city’s garbage pickup earlier in the day. Those trucks always manage to strewn stuff in the alley and if the squirrels don’t get it, the bunnies, trash pandas and blackbirds compete for tidbits. Must be a tough life being a bunny, especially in the city.

    1. IT must be hard being an urban bunny. Ours don’t seem to mind the rain. In addition to the one that had babies, another one seems to be building a new next under our porch. She’s been carrying in building material all morning.

I’m not quite sure how I got the pine needle image, but…

I don’t really use it that much, but I always get a cute free ones and enjoy looking at them sometimes. I also have a desk calendar that I use to record things such as which day I paid a bill, sent something by mail (our post office is that bad), and other important things that I want to keep track of off of my phone.

  28. Yay to the baby bunny. We actually saw a groundhog at the house across the street from us yesterday. We assume it/they (?) are living under someone’s deck nearby. The birdbath froze? Yes, I am sure that caused a bit of a backup until that was rectified. I am sure the birds relayed that “temporary closing” to each other on their traffic reports.
