I’ll start with a minor confession. I like McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish® sandwiches. Let me back away from that a bit. I don’t like them enough to have them often. It’s just that every now and then, they fill a certain void.  I say ‘they’ because I usually get two. Two sandwiches and a medium order of fries—I put the fries on top of the fish—That’s something I’ve always done.

I don’t think I’ve had a Filet-O-Fish® yet in 2024, but I came close last Wednesday. I was running errands and working on some things at home. The day got away from me. I had another errand to run. I decided to stop for my personal happy meal.

I pulled into the drive-thru line. The menus aren’t visible until you get to them and the woman on the other end was right on top of things and asked for my order. I caught a glimpse of the order of the person in front of me. He had some kind of burger and a fish sandwich and fries and his total was over $18. I asked the woman, “How much is a fish sandwich?”

“Six seventy-five.”

I did the math quickly. Two Filet-O-Fish® and a medium order of fries would be over $18. I told her no thanks, pulled out of line and went to Skooter’s where a Fish & Chips dinner is $14.10, which brings me to my one-liner.

One-Liner Wednesday by Linda G. Hill

Now, in case you’re thinking that this is a result of the rising minimum wage, you can put that thought aside. Connecticut has always had one of the highest minimum wage rates in the country, and although it went up this year, it went from $15.00 to $15.69 but most employers have offered more than minimum wage for years. Besides, Skooter’s pays the same wage. Skooter’s also had almost as many people working that afternoon—I counted five.

Our McDonald’s is one of the ones with giant monitors inside, where you order your own food. Of course, I was using the drive-thru. I don’t know if it’s still the case, but last year, they were one of the restaurants experimenting with the drive-thru orders being taken from a call center in a foreign country. I’m sure there’s a kid inside tossing fish paddies in a basket and pushing a button and then tossing fries in different basket, but the place isn’t buzzing with hired help. Then there’s the press about the CEO of McDonald’s who frequently boasted about their ability to raise menu prices without denting sales.

At Skooter’s a male human breaded two pieces of fish—pieces that looked like they were actually once part of a fish. I sat at the counter, ate my fish and talked to people.

  1. Interesting, Dan. Maybe the McDonald’s brand is worth the extra $4 to people. Lots of people are brand sensitive, probably because they suffer from FOMO. Haha, I learned all about FOMO from Michael yesterday.

    1. I suppose that could be, Robbie. I’ve always considered McDonald’s to be a safe choice when traveling. We are at the airport, so I guess I could see stopping there instead of a local diner.

Interesting about FOMO – I remember asking my daughter when I first saw that on Twitter.

    1. Thanks Willow. They seem to use a “what the market will bear” pricing model. They went too far over here, and dropped off in the last quarter. The CEO said they were planning on lowering prices on some items. That makes me want to go there even less.

  4. I must agree. The best fish and chips is from the Fishermans Co-op in my town. Anyway you want your choice of fish in a display case on ice cooked, grilled, crumbed pan fried and if you want it stuffed in a bun, they’ll do that too.
I too dislike any other food put on top of my chips, nothing! Why make my chips soggy?
My other peeve, while I’m at it, is putting food on top of the serviette/paper napkin whatever you call it. Why give me a already food cover item to attempt to mop up my own spills or wipe my hands?

My family prefers In & Out to McDonald’s so that’s where we go. Their prices have gone up some but, not to the limit that we’re ready to stop dropping in a few time a year.

I’m not a fan of their beef (no flavor to my tastebuds)but, I do like their fries.

The last really good fish sandwich I had was purchased ages ago in a bar in Charleroi, PA while visiting He-Man’s family. They were 2 feet long, thick, hot, fresh, and so good! That was his families Friday meal. Tradition. 😊

            1. Thanks Deborah. If we had access to an In & Out, I’d never go anywhere else. I always go there when I’m anywhere near one. The closest we come to that kind of taste is a place called Five Guys, and it’s nowhere near as good. Better than McD’s but far from In & Out.

Pittsburgh area bars and restaurants have the best fish sandwiches on earth. When our daughter and I went to one of the Lenten fish fries, a man recommended a bar for when I go back this summer with my brother. I already can’t wait.

  6. I love McDonald’s Filet-o-Fish burger without the tartar sauce. The sauce leaves me with a sore throat. McDonald’s and Burger King I visit them both regularly in my area. McDonald’s is just a walk away but for Burger King, I have to take the rickshaw. Today’s exchange rate is 1 USD = 83.5 Indian Rupees. So, if I order only a filet fish burger it will cost me 185 rupees which converts to 2.21 USD, and with a meal that includes fries and a coke it is 350 which converts to 4.19 USD. Let me also tell you that the prices have doubled in the past year because of inflation. Currently, elections are going on so I’m hoping the current government goes.

    1. Thanks Maureen. The local management says the prices reflect their costs, but it’s hard to believe that a local diner, with only two locations, can buy provisions and ingredients for less than a company with a fleet of fishermen working to supply them.

I don’t know if they still use the offshore call center. It was weird. The call center took orders as they came in, from hundreds of restaurants. It came to light after someone complained that the person couldn’t answer when they asked for directions.

It’s raining again, so I might have more water drops to share on Saturday. I love the way they look on the blossoms.

  12. Because of the shortage of employees, fast food is not that fast and for sure cheap it is not. We use to pop in and out of the various fast food chains when doing errands but now that it costs so much, it isn’t worth it. I’m so mature that I look at the prices and in my mind what I use to be able to buy for that amount comes to the forefront. :-) Yes, I get sticker shock every time I check out at the grocery store too. I also do most of the checking out as well because they are employee short.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. We should get paid for doing the work, Judy. I do the checkout, the bagging but the prices haven’t gone down yet. I know things cost more. I can deal with rising prices, but it irks me when they raise them simply because they want more money. That’s what the McDonald’s CEO said they thought they could continue to do. Record profits, simply from cranking up the price.

  17. Good on you for just leaving without buying, Dan — people don’t seem to realize that if EVERYONE did that, places of business would not be able to gouge so badly with their pricing. They will always charge whatever the market will bear, but it’s WE who decide what the market can bear when we choose to go along with their insane pricing. If every single person who went to the grocery store on a Monday across the entire US boycotted an item for having gone up in price, I honestly don’t think the item would stay at that price for very long. (I’ve seen this happen on a smaller scale in my hometown, when a store suddenly ups the cost of milk… everyone switches to the other stores and next thing you know…. next week everyone’s price is the same again!) But no one wants to do without anything, even in the short term, anymore, and it’s sadly costing everybody.

  19. What? OMG! I had no idea they had gotten so overpriced. Once here I thought I would treat myself to fast food delivery (via Door Dash) A couple of years ago. There weren’t many choices, so I looked at KFC. Even without the delivery charge, a couple of meals cost the price of half a week of groceries. It’s insane. One of the points of fast food is that it’s supposed to be cheap. Horsefeathers!

Anyhow, the gallery is splendid. Hugs.

  20. “Grew up” with McDonald’s, but now I really only connect with them when I need a french fry fix, Dan. The cost of everything food-related has made a huge jump up, and my off-the-top-of-my-head reaction is it’s all about wanting to squeeze even more profit out of us. A business is in business to make money of course…but at some point runs the risk of sending customers elsewhere…unless those businesses are also currently playing the how-much-can-we-get strategy. If we stopped eating out…and found a way to significantly slash weekly grocery purchases…maybe consumers could force at least some companies to “blink” and bring their prices down. (The baby bunny seems unaffected by all these price increases…)

    Liked by 1 person

    1. You’re right, Bruce. That’s exactly the game they’re playing, and it seems McDonald’s got caught. The CEO said they were going to lower prices on “some items” in February. I guess Fish sandwiches weren’t one of them. I think we have less of an impact on the local fast food joints because of their proximity to the airport. Then again, if I drive to the next town, it isn’t fast food.

The bunnies have actually walked, or rather hopped, with feet. Lots of houses have sprayed to get perfect green lawns. Now we have the bunnies.

I haven’t eaten in a fast food place in quite some time, but that is astounding. Fast food used to be quick and cheap. I’m also not a fan of everything becoming automated. At the local CVS I shop at, they usually have one checker and a small bank of machines for self-checkout. That sounds good in theory—WHEN THE MACHINES WORK! Usually, the checker has to run back and forth between actual living and breathing customers to the self-checkout. One of my most recent transactions must have taken (no exaggeration) over ten minutes.

    1. I just experienced that frustration at Target, Pete. I’m not a coupon hound, but the eye drops I use are expensive, and I had a $3 off coupon that came in the last box I bought. The self-checkout wouldn’t accept it. I waited over five minutes for a human, who said she couldn’t help me. I had her take the items off the list because I know they have the drops at the grocery store and they take the coupons.

Being retired gives me the luxury of time. Enough that I can say, “Nope, I’ll go somewhere else.”

I enjoy a fish sandwich, if it’s properly prepared (which McDonld’s arent, but…) The bun needs to be toasted and the bread should have a little crunch. I do like McD’s fries, but even they seem more expensive than they should be. Oddly enough, neither my wife nor I like Chick-fil-A. I remember being excited when they finally opened one near us.
