Happy Saturday and welcome to the bar. We’ve had a busy week, but Cheryl is back and David and I are going to celebrate our accomplishments by indulging in our favorite weekend pastime—eating, drinking and yacking like the old ladies after church when us children were dying to get out of our good clothes. While in the spirit(s) we will try to crack the code of Linda’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt.

Stream of Consciousness Saturday—Linda G. Hill

If we were having a beer, you’d be wondering about the week I had.

“You’re early, Dan. I was surprised to see your car in the upper lot.”

“The lower lot is now half reserved for delivery drivers, David.”

“Why on earth would anyone get delivery from here?”

“Whoa, David, are you saying our food is no good?”

“Hi Cheryl. No, not at all. I just mean why would you pass up the opportunity to come inside and wait for your food. Much like Dan does. He takes food home, but after a refreshing hour or so at the bar with you and me for company.”

“Okay, that’s better. I’m taking the liberty of serving your usual. I don’t want to compare badly to Curley.”

“Never can happen, Cheryl. Curley is a great backup, but you’re the best.”

“Aww, thanks Dan. I like you guys, too.”

“Cheers, Dan.”

“Cheers, David. How was your week?”

“It was good. You know I still have a few clients that I work with in retirement, and I met with one of them and pocketed a nice commission. How was your week?”

“Pedestrian by comparison…”

“As always, but you seem to enjoy it.”

“As I was saying, a little yard work, I did some woodworking, I wrote another story for the Thursday Doors Writing Challenge and I had a small victory over technology.”

“A victory over technology? You? That sounds like the choir shooting the minister. What, pray tell, did you do?”

“I had a coupon for eye drops, but the scanners at Target refused to accept it.”

“Shopping with coupons? Aren’t you taking this fixed-income thing a little too seriously, Dan?”

“David, these eye drops cost more per ounce than gold did when we were children, and the coupon was for three dollars off two boxes.”

“Three dollars each, or off the total if you bought two boxes?”

“Off the total, but still worth it in my book.”

“Mine too, my young friend. I thought you were fighting over six cents off a roll of paper towels.”

“No, I might let that one go. Fortunately, customer service at Target is eager to please.”

“I read the story you posted on Monday, is that the one you’re talking about?”

“No, I have another one for this coming Monday.”

“You’re really getting into this challenge, aren’t you?”

“I am. I used to be afraid of short stories, but I find them easier to do during this challenge.”

“I’m surprised you can say anything in just two thousand words. You normally use more to tell me about getting your oil changed.”

“Well, that usually involves a visit to Great River Park and breakfast at Maddie’s.”

“Yes. Let’s shut that down before it starts. What woodworking did you do?”

“I managed to get the components of my garden bench rough cut and ready for joinery.”

“I trust you’ll be bringing all manner of tools to bear on those pieces during that process.”

“Actually, I’m going to cut the joints by hand.”

“Do you guys want another round?”

“We do, Cheryl, and what’s that smell coming from the kitchen?”

“They’re baking the eggplant slices for eggplant Parmesan—it’s a weekend special. You want to try some?”

“I’ll pass, but it smells delicious.”

“I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, Dan. Did you say you were cutting things ‘by hand?’ with all those machines?”

“Yes. The pieces are curved and the joints at odd angles. It would be hard to set up for machine cuts, and not worth the time for one-off items.”

“I believe you meant two-off items, Dan.”

“Huh?”

“Well legs, arms, tops, bottoms—they come in pairs, right?”

“Not pairs, David. Mirror images.”

“Ah, I get it. Like making two left feet.”

“A mistake I have made more than once, yes. And since I have no wood to spare, it would spell the end of this project.”

“Apart from your antics, did you read about the all-electric tugboat?”

“I did, David. I’m surprised you found that article.”

“My client owns a fleet of tugboats.”

“Of course he does.”

“Remarkable technology. Wouldn’t you agree?”

“I would, but it is sad in one respect.”

“What’s that, Dan?”

“The copyright on Steamboat Willie expired last year. I was hoping Disney would re-release it in modern form.”

“You think this precludes that?”

“Lithium Ion Willie? I don’t think it works.”

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  1. Well that was a busy week….those tools are very impressive as are the produse! The photos are lovely the wildlife looking very cheeky! No sure I would fancy the eggplant or the smell of it cooking. Hope you have a good weekend Dan !

    1. It was a busy week, Willow, but it felt good to get some things done. Cheeky is a good word for these guys, especially the robin when it’s time for his bath to be drawn. The eggplant did smell good. They serve an eggplant fries appetizer that is pretty good. My wife and daughter like it more than I do, but they are tasty.

  2. That is going to be one handsome garden bench! The shrubs in your area have sure produced some beautiful blooms. Ours are budded out and that’s it right now. Thanks for the video because I had forgotten how simple comedy use to be. Happy weekend.

    1. Thanks Judy. I’m using reclaimed wood for the bench, so it will have some issues, but I think it’s going to turn out to be a nice place to sit. I think the old simple cartoons had more hints as to what was going on and less detail. I think that was good.

  3. Thank goodness I’ve learned to put my coffee down first. There were several laugh-out-louds here that might have been untidy. You and David were in fine form this morning! As for eggplant parmesan, I find anything parmesan is perfectly heavenly in the air. What a great fragrance to greet people! I can say nothing at all about your woodworking because it boggles my mind. I hope we get a picture of the progress. And the finished product, of course. I will miss those lilacs until next year.

    1. I guess David has to pick on me, now that Skippy is gone, but he doesn’t seem to mind. I will share in-progress pictures of the bench. It’s on hold until I get a replacement part for a sander that broke yesterday. The eggplant smelled much better than it tastes. I have to prune those lilacs, wish me luck.

      1. Oh, yes: good luck! I’m sorry to hear about the disappointing eggplant, but I think that’s a tricky vegetable. A broken sander, too? Indeed, may your luck improve!

  4. You’d think the bunnies wouldn’t like munching near the road. Must be a sweeter grass…
I think we’re going to have a record breaking rhodie bloom this year due to all the rain. I’ve never seen our bushes this full of buds..

    1. We see them eating in that patch all around the neighborhood. I usually cross the street so as not to scare them into trying to cross the street. I think our rhodies did set a record this year. I guess they like it wet.

      1. They do. Can’t wait to see our bloom this year…

  5. That one image says rough cut, but it looks very smooth. Do you have much sanding to do?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks GP. There is a lot of sanding involved, especially along the cut lines, and it has to be done before assembly. Unfortunately, I am now waiting for a replacement part for the sander I need to use (I’m not doing that by hand).

  6. Mmm…eggplant Parmesan…used to love that when I was still able to eat tomato. You should have tried it, Dan.

Eyedrops…the OTC drops are expensive enough (I can vouch for that), but now I have to use prescription drops for dry eyes. The cost of generic is not bad, but any of the name brands? They are hugely expensive and most likely add gold flakes to them as I find no other reason for the cost.

I had planned on writing for the Thursday door challenge, but I can’t even manage one blog post this month. Busy, busy, and brother is coming for a visit on Friday. Maybe I’ll be back after the visit. Happy weekend, Dan!

    1. This place also makes eggplant fries as an appetizer. They are fixed the same way. They give you marinara sauce for dipping, but you could ignore that, or switch to something else. I am hoping to avoid the prescription eye drops, as the stories I’ve heard about those prices scare me.

I’m glad you’re busy. From the photos I’ve seen, it seems like it’s stuff you enjoy. That’s what’s important. I hope you have a good weekend.

  7. Hand joinery?! Impressive, Dan. Good luck but I suspect you’ve got this easily enough. Still, anyone who makes things like you do deserves best wishes since the final product will no doubt be amazing. Have a great weekend. Like you, not a fan of eggplant but to each his own, eh?

    1. Sometimes, cutting by hand is less time consuming and going slow lets mistakes emerge before they are too far gone to be salvaged.

“Busy” doesn’t quite cover your week Dan. The bench is going to be awesome. Can’t wait to see the finished project.

Lively conversation at the bar today. Glad to have Cheryl back.

Sad to see those lilacs are about finished for this season. Same here, but my Rhododendron is quite beautiful.

Love those squirrels on the fence. They have no shame when it comes to peanuts.

Loved the video. Silly, simple fun.

Hope you enjoy a pleasant weekend Dan.

    1. Thanks Ginger. You know me, I’ll share in-progress photos, once I have more progress to show.

We’ve moved the feeding to the back yard where it used to be when we had Maddie. It took them a while to get used to the layout again, but I think they understand.

Spring is about to yield to summer. I’ve been working in shorts, and sweating up a storm. My dad always said it built character (as did every miserable thing in life).

I hope you have a great weekend.

  9. Thanks for the rhododendrons, Dan. I miss seeing them in my yard. The project looks great. 👍🏻I don’t know if I ever told you this, but sometimes when I’reading your conversations with David, I hear it as Hal and Dave of 2001 A Space Odyssey. “Dave, I really think I’m entitled to an answer to that question.” 😉Happy Saturday!

    1. Ha ha – Maybe I’ll ask him to open the pod bay door.

The rhododendrons are doing well this year. I was surprised by how well the new ones are doing. I guess they like the rain. I hope you guys have a great weekend.

      1. Thanks! We have a sunny day so good one to get out a bit. Hubs bought me a shiny new battery powered weed-eater, so I smell garden work ahead. I just can’t face another visit from the property gardener whom we have nicknamed The Destroyer. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

  10. I love anything Parmesan except perhaps liver! I vote no to any attempt to modernize the old Disney cartoons! Yikes – Snow White gets Botox to stay young forever? Noooo.

    1. I do like Steamboat Willie, but you’re probably right, they would mess it up, for sure. Liver Parmesan? Now that’s a thing than should never be allowed to happen.

  12. Wait a minute–you passed on the eggplant parmesan?! I had to catch my breath before I could read on. 😉

I have had that same problem with coupons not scanning. The checker holds that scan gun over one time and then says, “It’s not scanning.” Well, no kidding. So what are you gonna do about it? Whatever happened to the old ‘override’ or calling the manager to do his magic? Looking forward to Monday’s post because you know ‘inquiring minds want to know!”

Bugle weed! I have that, too, but had not idea what it is called. Thank you! Have a great weekend, Dan.

    1. I have had a piece of the eggplant, Lois, but I’m not a fan of the whole combination. I do like their eggplant fries, which are French fry shaped, on the thick side but very good.

I was at the self-checkout. The clerk that came to assist said “It has to be in this color box” pointing at the picture on the coupon. I showed her the Bold lettering saying “Any variety, any size” but she was having none of it. Customer service took $3 off the slip.

I think Bugle weed is also called ajuga, but that might be a slightly different ground cover with blue flowers. I hope you’re having a great weekend.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Ajuga and bugleweed are the same! Have you seen that Camzyos (sp??) commercial, where some of the picture is in blue? I think Mike (the guy in the commercial) picks some ajuga to give to his wife. It’s in the mint family. Whew! These commercials are getting deep.

I think eggplant is an acquired taste, so I get it. Weirdly, I have never had eggplant fries.

        Liked by 1 person

        1. I haven’t seen the commercial. My wife would smack me for taking the blossom away from the bees.

The critters are hoping I’ll bring some food to share when I start using that bench.
