Before I slip in my one-liner, I have a technical request. I reached out to the Happiness Engineers yesterday after losing one long comment to a login fiasco and then having to log into my own blog in order to reply to a comment—even though WordPress showed my avatar and told me I was logged in as me. In defense of my position, I mentioned that this was not just my problem. You know the whole “safety in numbers” or “misery loves company” thing.

The Happiness Engineer responded with more questions. In fairness to them, the questions did indicate that they had read my request. One of the things they asked for is if I could identify other blogs where people are receiving Anonymous comments so they could visit those blogs. I am reluctant to send the HEs snooping around without warning. So, if you have been receiving Anonymous comments, or have been experiencing login problems and would like to help the HEs solve this problem, leave a comment on this post indicating your permission.

My one-line comes from a practice of various advertisers that seems to be growing. I’ve been seeing ads that end with “If you would like more information, please scan the QR code.”

As the title of this post indicates, that’s crazy talk.

“To scan the QR code, I have to get up and walk to the TV—something I haven’t done since they invented the remote!”

One-Liner Wednesday — Linda G. Hill

Even if I could somehow scan the QR code from the comfort of my chair, why would I want more information about someone’s Medicare Advantage plan, treatment for a medical malady whose name I’d have to look up first, or auto insurance that, given how many of these ads I see, must be over priced? Just take me back to my show.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  3. Though I haven’t noticed anonymous comments on my blog, I know that some of my comments became anonymous on others’ blogs. This whole thing about having to log in, or having to leave name and email address, seems so goofy since it all appeared to work quite well before “improvements.” As for walking over to the television, again happy I didn’t have a mouthful of coffee. A couple of LOLs in this — thanks! It would appear that the azaleas are taking over the limelight from the Beauty of Moscow. Gorgeous!

    1. I think they’re getting to the point where they’re going to ask us to leave the program and visit their site on our TV. Most Smart TVs now include a built-in browser. I don’t have a Smart TV, but I learned that while looking around for a new one.

Here’s hoping the geniuses at work can find an answer. I have thought the exact same thing about the codes as you have. :-)

    1. It’s a black squirrel, Wayne. They are a variety of Easter Grey Squirrels that have a genetic abnormality. They breed with grey squirrels and their numbers have been growing around here. They are adorable. The doves are the most easy going birds in the yard. Nothing seems to bother them.

Not Anonymous, but Ginger–who has been commenting on my blog for years–now needs to be Approved before her comments will appear. Why??!!! She is the only one. I thought this was some kind of WP fluke, but it’s been going on for about a month and I still have to approve her comments. And they are just comments–not video or anything weird attached. Help me, WP!

Ginger wrote on my blog that she used her iPhone this morning because she needed to charge her iPad. And I didn’t need to approve! She just commented a couple minutes ago and said her iPad was all charged so let’s give it a test run. And I HAD to approve her comment. That’s kinda messed up, isn’t it? Approve on the iPad but good to go on the iPhone. I don’t know what to think.

            1. My blog reading experience (especially with JetPack) is quite different on my iPad than it is on my iPhone. JetPack is awful on my phone for responding to comments (It never takes me to the right place in the list), but I don’t have to log in. I often have t login on my iPad.

  12. Dan, I have embraced the QR code way of life. It isn’t going away, so might as well adapt. The ones that flash on the TV screen crack me up though.

My comment box went willy-nilly last week, asking me to sign in, even though I already was. I haven’t had anonymous comments, but I have appeared on other blogs as anonymous. I hope you and the HE’s will get to the bottom of things.

  13. Good luck with the HE. I’m not getting anonymous comments, but do wonder how that can be if everyone else is having that problem. Usually I’m the epicenter for things going wrong.

I like your one-liner, but will admit I haven’t seen any commercials that want me to scan QR codes so haven’t felt the need to run to the TV like when I was a child being my father’s TV remote control.

    1. I love that comment, Ally. Yes, we were the remotes. But we were intelligent remotes, “Put the ballgame on” – my brother and I know what that meant and what channel to turn to. Of course there were only three, but still…

  14. Yes, just take me back to the show! Typing a comment here and other blogs this morning I’m being prompted to log in. I AM LOGGED IN! This comment box is giving me a (log in optional) note meaning after I comment I’ll be giving another dialogue box that asks me to subscribe to your blog or continue reading. I am already subscribed to your blog. It’s been going on for weeks and it’s very frustrating.

  15. On occasion, I have been quite puzzled by the request to log in to a WP site when leaving a comment…while of course already being logged in to WP. It has happened a couple of times a week for several weeks now, but I do not recall which sites were involved or if any “pattern” could be ascertained. I have not had any Anonymous comments to-date, but I post much less frequently so perhaps that is in my WP future as well. As for those QR codes, my remote would be quite mad if I used anything else in conjunction with my viewing activities…and I like to keep my remote happy…it tends to play hide-and-seek when I don’t.🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks Bruce – a runaway remote is definitely something you want to avoid. I can’t determine a pattern either. Yesterday I successfully left two comments on blogs. Then, on a third one where I appeared to be logged in, my comment was deleted and I was prompted to log in.

  16. Geeze, Dan. Always something, isn’t it? I haven’t had stray comments but they make me sign in often to post comments when I am already signed in and follow the blog whose post I’m attempting to respond to. We don’t have a cable or satellite network here and use only streaming so many of those problems don’t exist. We did recently ditch a couple of networks that rarely have anything for us and are increasing costs. Good luck with those happiness freaks, um, I meant geeks. 😉😂

  17. Good point about the QR codes although I rarely use them.

Regarding those comments, things seem to have been a mess with comments on WordPress. I can like a post, but when I try to comment my credentials seem to get lost. Not all the time, but sometimes. However, this seems to have improved in the past few days. So, at the moment I don’t have a problem, but we will see if I can post this comment.

Love your one-liner. Do “they” ever stop thinking of ways to try to get us to buy something? Not remotely interested.

The mourning doves are my favorite bird in our backyard where I created the Bird Park. They are so cute to watch. I love when they pair off and nestle down around plants and rocks and stay for several hours, while all the others come and go.

Love the black squirrel. Haven’t seen any here.

Lots of playful baby bunnies though. Also fun to watch.

Old Glory looking mighty spiffy in the sunshine.

Happy Hump Day. Enjoy the weather’cause tomorrow promises a lot of rain.

    1. Thanks Ginger. We saw a pair of Mourning Doves sitting on the fence like the crows did. We’ve never seen them there before. Apparently, they mate for life, so a pair is probably husband and wife (or two females out for some girl time after having sent the guys on an errand).

We have lots of baby bunnies this year, and lots of black squirrels. We are one of only a few houses that have food out and a reasonable clean birdbath – not always up to Master Robin’s standards, but clean and full.

  19. I get several anonymous comments a week. Of course, I took a week off so I haven’t had any comments in the last seven days and none so far on two posts. This has been a problem and I of course wrote the HE’s and finally gave up with all the screen shots etc. They acted like I was the only one having the problem. Good luck. Great photos.

  20. Every now and then I have to log in to leave a comment or even to reply to comments on my own blog! It’s so random that it doesn’t seem worth the trouble of notifying WP. In my experience Help Desks are getting less and less helpful! Mourning doves are so sweet! I love to watch them coo.

  29. Hi Dan, yes, I do get anonymous comments left on my blog posts, but that’s because I switched off the setting on my blog that says that users must be logged into WordPress or must leave a name and email address to be able to leave a comment. If I had the setting switched on, I’d be annoyed that I was getting anonymous comments. I don’t mind anonymous comments as I know some folk don’t like having to leave their details.

    Hope that helps.

    1. Thanks Hugh. I have that switched off as well. Running a challenge, I think it’s important to let people leave a comment or a pingback.
