Happy Saturday. We are taking time out from a 3-day weekend to enjoy our usual Saturday treat. We’ll spend enough time here to solve Linda’s SoCS puzzle, and then we’ll move onto the solemn and fun festivities.

Stream of Consciousness Saturday—Linda G. Hill

If we were having a beer, you’d be trying to escape.

“Happy Saturday, Dan. No plans for the weekend?”

“I plan to avoid anything having to do with shopping or travel, David. How’s that?”

“That’s good. As long as Cheryl has some John Howell’s Bourbon, I don’t have to go anywhere.”

“I have bourbon and Modelo on tap for you guys. It’s going to be slow here, unless people want to pre-picnic on our patio.”

“I’d like to be on your patio during our picnic tomorrow, Cheryl.”

“Not a hot dog and burger guy, David?”

“Those are fine foods, it’s the company I’d like to avoid. My wife’s family.”

“They do seem to bring out the worst in you.”

“Put that family at a convent social and the nuns would be tossing hymnals at each other before the day was over.”

“No wonder we can’t have peace on our time, David.”

“It’s true, Dan. These people will fight about anything—and this is an election year.”

“Can’t you make an excuse not to go?”

“It’s at my house this year! We get it every four years. They skipped Covid, so it moved back a year. Now we’re stuck with the presidential election years. It’s enough to make a man drink.”

“David.”

“Yes, Cheryl.”

“You already drink. Here’s your John Howell’s Special. I gave you an extra cherry.”

“Thanks. By the way, Dan, if you’d like to drop in for a burger tomorrow…”

“Thanks, but no. I think I need to write something.”

“The rest of Bessie O’Hara’s story? You left us hanging on that one.”

“Actually, I have another story about her, but not the one you’re thinking of. Still, it might help.”

“Are you publishing that on Monday?”

“No. I have a different story scheduled for Monday.”

“According to my calendar, you’re out of Mondays, my young friend.”

“I know. I thought I’d tell you the story next week when we’re here.”

“Next Saturday is June first. I thought this was a month-of-May thing.”

“It is, but Thursday Doors always runs from Thursday to Saturday, so I extended the deadline.”

“Was the Saturday thing your idea, Dan?”

“No. Norm Frampton always gave us three days to get our doors in.”

“You gotta love Canadiens.”

“Why not publish the story on Friday?”

“I’ve been writing a lot. I don’t want to overdo it.”

“Dan, since you retired, you’ve written four books. You have another one coming soon, and you publish this blog four days a week. You seriously can’t expect us to believe that your worried about asking us to read too much.”

“Well, if you have more time to read, Teagan has a new release.”

“She does?”

“Yep, The Delta Pearl is out in books form.”

“Books—with an ‘S’?”

“It’s a ‘steampunk duology’, so yes, books—damn, now you have me thinking about the Twilight Zone—‘Having to do with books?’ Yes, sir, Books,’ That’s from the questioning of Mr. Romney Wordsworth…’ in The Obsolete Man.”

“That’s a great episode. Remember the crowd at the end of that, when they grab the guy and slide him up the table?”

“Yes, I do.”

“Those are my in-laws. And that woman who pushes the microphone out of the way, that’s my sister-in-law.”

“Cheryl, please give the old man another glass of bourbon. Maybe you could hide him here for the weekend.”

“Thanks Dan, but this is the first place they’d look.”

“I guess you’re right. It’s the first place I’d look for you. Give my best to your wife.”

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

    1. I cross there every day, and I usually wait until there are no cars anywhere near the intersection. Nobody stops for anything.

  2. My sympathies to David! I am reminded of my grandma and her siblings, who could foam at the mouth over who was what age. They lived to be angry. Thanks for this gallery of photos. Those buds, the quiet flag, and that wonderful playground are a much-needed antidote for our times. The white rhododendrons are otherworldly. Enjoy your weekend of avoidance (and writing)!

    1. Thanks Maureen. Too many people live to be angry. I do my best to avoid the ones that I know.

I like that the rhododendrons bloom on different schedules. We don’t have that many, but we have blossoms somewhere for a long time.

I hope you have a great weekend.

  3. Your rhodies are beautiful. I like your plans for the holiday weekend because they echo mine. :-) I just saw that NH is expecting 2M visitors this weekend, and I plan to try and avoid them all. :-) You’ll be writing, and I’m working on two new raised beds. Have a good one.

    1. I hope to spend some time in my workshop, too. I’ve go the bench parts sanded to the point where I can start working on assembly. We have a little yard work to finish, but there should be time for both.

I’d be avoiding those tourists, too. Enjoy the weekend!

  6. Holidays can be rough with family reunions. My heart goes out for David, I have one like that – no matter what the conversation, he can turn it to politics!! (my least favorite topic!!) ugh

    1. I think we all have one (or more) and they don’t seem to like being happy. I’m old enough that I don’t feel bad telling people I’d rather not discuss politics.

      1. Oh, i tell them I hate politics and don’t want to talk about it, but they just keep talking.

  10. Hey, Dan! I think I see what you did there. You never said the word, just described the action of moving, correct? Love your pics!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. The word is in there, but it’s tucked away, Kim. I did try for a bit of a moving vibe though.

I hope you have a great weekend. Speaking of moving, are you still leaving soon?

      1. Yes sir, Praise God! We leave next Thursday, first overnight in Amarillo, next night Albuquerque, then landing in Echo Basin, Colorado with any luck, we will spend a couple of months there, then move next door to Utah for a month before heading east. I just hope and pray my body continues to heal and get better, and the secret to that happening is to MOVE!

  11. My sympathies to David for the family dynamics. Being around angry soul sucking people these days is a hard row to hoe. It’s getting harder and harder to avoid them despite all sorts of avoidance gymnastics. People seem far to willing to be upset about something and far to willing to blow things up about the slightest little thing. I think they all need to take a deep breath and put their phones away. Wishing you a peaceful ‘howliday’ weekend. Elsa, Wilson & I are keeping it low key. Mostly so we can avoid the nutters.

I sympathize with David. His in-laws are a carbon copy of mine. Always arguing, someone not speaking to someone else, absolutely no fun to be around any time of the year or any day of the week.

Your rhododendrons are just beautiful. I only have one but it is packed solid this year with blooms. And the baby bunnies are blooming too! 🤗

So nice to see Old Glory flying quiet and proud.

You seem to have a good plan for the weekend Dan. Monday sounds like it will be an indoor day in these parts.

I have a new toolbox to assemble. I might do that on Monday. A day in my shop guarantees that I’ll be thinking about my dad.

I hope you have a nice weekend.

Of course, the shopping part would also apply to evenings, weekends, and anything after about 9 am. :-) That sandwich looks pretty good to me and paired with a dark beer, even better.

I think I’d find a reason to miss a family get together that had politics on the menu.

    That is all.
