Another Saturday has come, and David and I are going to sit at the bar and discuss recent events—don’t worry, we never go near the topics that just sent shivers up your spine. Not here, and not when alcohol is involved (which is why we’re here).

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “sum.” Use the letters “sum” in a word in your post or use the word “sum.” Enjoy!

Linda G. Hill’s—Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt.

If we were having a beer, you’d be pretty excited about something in the news.

“What’s the good word, Dan.”

“It’s your turn to buy.”

“I guess that is good from your perspective. What about some good news for me.”

“Voyager-1 is operational again.”

“What?”

“Voyager-1. Don’t you remember the Voyager spacecrafts?”

“Before you two get lost in space, are you planning to take on some cargo while you’re docked at the bar?”

“Clever, Cheryl. Yes, I think we will have what has become our usual Saturday order.”

“Modelo and a John Howell’s Special. You guys certainly are predictable.”

“I like to think that we’re consistent.”

“Like your spacecraft duo, Dan.”

“Indeed, Cheryl. We were launched our careers at the same time. I’ve retired, but they are still adding to the sum of man’s knowledge.”

“Face it Dan. Voyager added more to man’s knowledge the moment it flew past Saturn that you have in your entire life.”

“That’s true, David, but that doesn’t depress me, it makes me feel good. Think about it, those guys really got something right with both those crafts.”

“I’ll tell you what’s amazing.”

“What’s that, David?”

“That there’s still a team working on the Voyager Program, and that they fixed a problem in a spacecraft that’s over fifteen billion miles away. My dealer can’t fix the backup camera in my car.”

“That is sad, when you think about it.”

“Do you think they’ll be disappointed?”

“Who?”

“The people who Voyager runs into.”

“Why would they be disappointed, David?”

“Well, Voyager is carrying that golden record thing, right?”

“Yes, they both carry one.”

“That’s never been updated. So, they find that, they read it, play it, whatever, and they think they know who we are. What if they decide to come here and find us the way we are today? Do you think they’ll be disappointed?”

“Wow. That’s a good question. I mean, in some areas, we’ve added a lot to the pile. We’re better in so many ways.”

“Yeah, but in some areas, we’ve made a fine mess of things. Dan.”

“Well, if they’re capable of coming here, I guess if they don’t like what they find, they could just exterminate us.”

“Sheesh, Dan. That’s a heck of a thought. I was coming to see if you guys want another round and here you are talking about being exterminated.”

“Not only that, Cheryl, He said it like it’s a a good thing!”

“No, David, Cheryl, not a good thing. I just tried to put it in perspective. Besides, Voyager is no where near any place that has people. We’ll all be dust before anyone shows up.”

“You are just a fountain of comforting thoughts, Dan.”

“You’re the one who asked if they—whoever they are—will be disappointed, David.”

“You’re looking at this all wrong, guys.”

“How’s that Cheryl?”

“Maybe they get here. Not earth, but right here. Maybe where they come from, no one ever invented beer. Maybe no one ever made bourbon, or pizza or stuffed mushrooms.”

“Voyager-one doesn’t get close to another planet for forty-thousand years. This place might not still be here.”

“We should have packed a cooler to go with that golden record.”

“Dan, did they even put recipes on there?”

“No. No recipes.”

“Idiots?”

“David, what food from nineteen seventy-seven would you have described?”

“Hey, we had cheesecake back then. We had chocolate chip cookies. We had ice cream and pie and German Chocolate cake. We had beer, wine, bourbon and milkshakes. Hell, Dan. We had Twinkies—we could have put a pack of Twinkies on board, they’d still be good.”

“That’s it. If we had only thought to include some chocolate, a pack of Twinkies and a freeze-dried pie. They wouldn’t be coming to eradicate us.”

    1. Thanks Judy. We have a similar dogwood in the front, but I think it was hit by the last hard freeze we had. Very few blossoms, and only on the top where it gets some sun.

  3. When you think of how basic the technology on Voyager is, it really is amazing she’s still reporting back. More dependable than a Timex. 😉
And I apologize to your wife on the bunny’s behalf.

    1. It really is amazing that they are both still going. They hope their fuel will last until the 50-year mark in September 2027. That would be cool. But we’re actually learning some stuff we had no idea about.

My wife was not happy with that bunny, but she wasn’t mad enough to chase it away. The dig fast, so the damage was done.

  4. The way I see it, we do such a good job of exterminating ourselves that we’ll have done the work for them by the time they get here. I agree about the marvel of the repair. And I also agree that recipes would have been a great idea, though I cringe at the idea of 40,000-year-old Twinkies, which no doubt would have evolved into their own life form by then. I’d have volunteered the first pierogis I ever made; they’d still be in their prime 40,000 years hence. (Dough by Goodyear.) I love the trestle through the trees, of course. Thanks for the good start to my Saturday!

    1. I’m sure they will wonder what happened to us when they get here. Perhaps they’ll do a fly-by and decide not to stop.

Pierogis would have been a good food item to share. You.re right, the Twinkies would likely be Twinkoids by now. Perhaps seen as an invasion. I hope today is the start of a great weekend.

He does look grumpy! And what a pretty dandelion. How lovely of you to plant flowers for the bunnies ;-)

    1. Especially in the cold of space. Those guys would still be good.

That cat has been giving me that face for years. She/he didn’t like our dog, but never ran away-just teased her as I struggled to keep her quiet. You would think we planted flowers for the bunny. We’re pretty sure that’s who ate the dandelion and a small one that was just starting to bloom.

      1. True thing!

Too funny. But also a pain in the butt to aggravate your dog. It does appear that you offer up your flowers to the wildlife ;-) I, meantime, am cursing the ground hog who ate my cukes (before they could even flower) and lettuce…

        1. Groundhogs earn the ‘hog’ in their name. Sorry for your cukes. That’s a major loss.

Twinkies should have gone into space, and the recipe for them! Nothing would destroy a Twinkie, although one million years from now they might be Twinkie Dust.

So glad to see Grumpy today. I think he’s like me, he hates having his picture taken.

Your Korean Dogwood looks magnificent, and the pink dandelion is a beauty. I never knew they existed. I have to look them up.

Sorry about the Editor’s flowers, but apparently she encroached on the bunny’s prime napping spot.

Very fitting that flags were burned on Flag Day. We just gave a couple that we had to the VFW to properly dispose of. We’ve done that for years. It’s sad to see so many tattered flags flying that people just ignore. It’s so disrespectful.

Wishing you a Happy Father’s Day Dan. I hope there’s a cold brew served with dinner a dessert that defies calories!

    1. Thanks Ginger. Faith and I have a fun day planned.

Ironically, The Editor planted some clover in that patch, as well as flowers. I guess none of that mattered to a bunny looking for a cool place to nap. I had to put that fence up because she was pruning that new bush.

That cat always gives me the sour look.

I do think the Twinkies would have survived the journey. I hope you have a great weekend.

Since it left the solar system, it’s on its own power. It won’t last too much longer, but they are hoping it can make its 50th anniversary in September 2027. I am, too.

There are people who started their career at NASA with Voyager and have never left (other than to retire). Apparently, it’s sending back data that we’ve never seen before. Sending instructions 15 billion miles – boy, you better hope there were no typos in that code.

  26. This was a good conversation, Dan. I and Sarah often ask these hypothetical questions to each other to spark a discussion. For instance, both my parents never saw a computer in real life. Well, my mom did have a glimpse of it but those computers were those bulky ones with a floppy drive. So, I often ask myself and Sarah – what if my parents would return and see the world we live in? I mean back then (during their existence) there were no supermarkets with trolleys, smartphones, laptops, or anything like that. Even calculators were sort of semi-luxury. However, there is one question that me and Sarah have no answer to, and I would like to ask you and your audience here. Here it goes – My mother passed away young (age 51) and quickly of a heart attack. On the other hand, Sarah’s mother is going through the health problems of old age and frequent hospitalization which is hard to experience for her. So we often ponder what would people choose if given two choices. Choice 1: See your parents pass away quickly but at a younger age or Choice 2: See them grow old and go through all the pain and health issues. Do you get what point I’m trying to make here? Apologies in advance if my questions hurt someone emotionally. It is not my intent.

I hope you’re having a great week!

Maybe he doesn’t like having his/her picture taken. But there are a lot of people here who like seeing that cat.
