One of the rituals of summer in our little town is the Volunteer Fire Department’s carnival, fireworks display and parade. They missed 2020 due to Covid, and 2021 because by the time the State said they could have a carnival, it was too late to organize one. They bounced back in 2022 with a smaller event. When it was clear that residents were ready to support them, they came back strong in 2023 and again last week.

I like to do my part. I go to the carnival and buy 21 food tickets for $20. I never use all 20 tickets, but you never know when you might want to snag a burger for the walk home. I also buy a beer, and I toss a tip into the fireman’s boot (tips go toward their scholarship fund).

They have the carnival this time of year because today, July 4th, is a national holiday here in the U.S. Today, we celebrate our independence from the ‘U’ in “color,” “honor,” and “favor” and from the need to be exceptionally polite when waiting in a line—sorry, queue. I do wish our founding fathers had retained the rights to produce sticky toffee pudding.

Of course, we had other reasons for declaring our independence—all good ones.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

That’s why I periodically use the caption I have on the flag photo that I’m using today. We need to recognize our independence, but also the fact that it applies to everyone. We also have to remember the people who fought for this independence in the first place and the people who have fought to maintain it for almost 250 years.

    1. It is fun, and it’s a lot of work by a group of volunteers who serve this community so well. We support them in other ways, but this is a fun way to show them we appreciate their service.

    1. Thanks Steve. I decided to snap these photos early in the morning. I’ve taken photos during operation, but it seems to make some people nervous. Still, seeing people, especially children, on these rides adds a different dimension.

      1. Relevant comment because I hear you could be in danger of substituting your Presidency for a Kingship. Seems a shame having gone to all that trouble never to be in that situation again. You are right about not forgetting the lessons of the past. King Charles 1 being a smart arse said he the King was above the law . They beheaded him 10 days after he made the statement.

  14. The close call on this one came with the three wristbands. These are wonderful images for the 4th — kid rides are the best! Thanks for the words from the past; we need some reminders of idealism. I think. Thanks also for more of my continuing education: sticky toffee pudding! Never heard of it, but Google enlightened me.     1. If I make it to four wristbands, Maureen, I think I should get a free beer. I decided to get photos of the rides before people get on them. Not as much fun, but fewer curious looks coming back my way. I don’t get up on that soapbox often, but I think we forget the meaning of these holidays, and the cost paid (by others) for a day off. I’ve only traveled to England once, and I had sticky toffee pudding for dessert on my last night there. I was almost hoping my flight would be cancelled. I hope you enjoy the day and the weekend.

    1. Thanks Ginger. I visited Faith yesterday, and that’s the extent of driving I plan to do this weekend. The Editor maintains a ban on anything close to dangerous this weekend (after multiple years where the 4th ended with a trip to the ER/Urgent Care). I will be editing my next book and sipping something cold.

      The carnival is a wonderful gift from the Volunteers and a great way to support them. I hope they know how much we appreciate their service, and I hope people remember the price paid for our independence.

      1. White Paws, the lone male of my little group, is the most afraid. No matter where he is, if there is thunder, rain or fireworks, he gets up and heads under the bed. I feel bad for him, too, but I just let him be. ‘Course, his little girlfriend, Piper, quickly follows him so maybe we need to rethink being too sorry for him…😹😼

  30. Yeah, that caged Ferris wheel isn’t for me either. My Dad said he wouldn’t spin it, but he loved the spin so the kid in him won and he spun it anyway, it wasn’t fun for me. I never have been able to do spin just loops, ups, and downs for me. Give me an old fashioned Ferris Wheel, and a roller coaster and I’m good.

  40. Oh, I remember such carnivals in the town where I grew up. It looks so fun! Thank you for the lovely memories. Thank you also for the inspirational reminders.   43. A lovely post, Dan. I remember going to a fair in South Glastonbury every year as a kid. Good memories. And I appreciated your patriotism and that the principles on which the country was founded need to apply to all Americans. We aren’t there quite yet. Wonderful summer photos too. :-)

    1. Thanks Diana. I saw a notice that Glastonbury will hold it’s 48th Apple Harvest & Music Festival in October. I’m not sure the firemen still have a carnival, but I know they also have a food truck festival.

      This wonderful country of ours is still a work in progress. I hope we keep moving in the right direction.

  44. Nice post, Dan! There’s just something about a carnival that draws me in. I’m sure the role it played in a couple of legendary Twilight Zone episodes helps, but it’s more than that. It’s such a touchstone of our youth, and those times in summer when we could play all day and have a blast with such simple pleasures.

  47. Great carnival pictures. Back in the 80s and 90s, carnivals especially in Mumbai were a big social event. I mean really big. You would find crowds even on weekday evenings because people were a lot more social back then. There was only one TV channel that the entire India would watch, so everyone would watch the same serials (soap opera) and listen to the same radio programs. The carnival would bring the town together. I have so many memories of me and my mother. We did some absolutely foolish things. I often narrate those stories and laugh at what I and my mom did. I love those rides as well. This carnival would take place on a big ground right opposite Marine Drive. I’m sure by now you would know what Marine Drive is. It’s a C-shape beach promenade that opens to the Arabian Sea. So, when we take a ride on a massive Ferris Wheel and when we reach the top, we see this 180-degree view of the open sea and then feel like we’re falling into the sea as we come down. Have you tried that Ferris Wheel with multiple movements? It tumbles as you go up and down. It is advisable to try that one before eating anything or else it is likely that one might puke. These days these carnivals here are struggling. Kids are more interested in smartphone and VR games so often they’re visited by my generation folks who now might not try these adventurous rides.

      1. The saddest thing which I often witness is this – a group of friends come into a restaurant/McDonald’s/Burger King or whatever food establishment you can think of. All talking at the same time, excited and happy. They sit down and then they pull out their smartphones and now no one is talking. They are all busy with their devices. That is such a sad thing to see. I mean back in my college days our chats had no end. We could chat for days and not get bored. The smartphone generation can’t put down their phones for five minutes. I & Sarah never pull out our phones when we are together. Unless of course, there is a call or WhatsApp message.

        1. I read about a bar in London that installed filters to block cell phone signal. They put up signes encouraging people to talk to each other. When I am in a bar or restaurant, I try to engage with others.

          1. That’s good. Speaking of devices and establishments, I also dislike the concept Starbucks brought to India where people just enjoy free Wi-Fi, turn on their laptops and hog seats for hours. This might work in foreign countries where population is not a problem. In India, whenever I enter a Starbucks, I find it hard to find a seat because these people just sit there and act (and I mean it) like they’re doing some really imporant work. Plus, I also do not appreciate Starbucks calling out my name loudly letting everyone know what I’m drinking today – Tall Java Chip for Sharukh. Ten heads stare at me and they’re like Oh this guys is having a tall java chip today.
