We are in the middle of a hot and humid week that is about to change to a hot rain. I am working through (what I hope are) final edits for Bridge to Nowhere, so I’m going to try to get closer to Linda’s suggested length for this challenge.

I couldn’t resist this one-liner:

Vegan Jerky
Vegan Jerky

Beef jerky is made from beef — Pork jerky is made from pork — Turkey jerky (I like saying turkey jerky) is made from turkey — I wonder…

The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. 1. Using port to make jerky sounds a waste 😂 The flowers and animals photos are so good Dan.

    1. Perhaps, but it does make a tasty snack. It’s softer than beef jerky and the flavor is more nuanced.

      Thanks Brian.

  2. I love those bunnies and squirrels. We don’t have them here. It’s too dry and not enough greenery to each. A few of your bunnies look like they are getting plenty to eat! That dark colored squirrel is so cute.

Lovely flowers. I’ve never heard of bee balm flowers.

    1. Thanks Kay! I don’t know why WordPress does that. It happens to me, too. Our bunnies are enjoying a yard full of things to eat (I’m sure our neighbors cal them weeds). We give them water, and a place to live.

The bees love the bee balm.

  7. The bee balm and Rose of Sharon are beautiful. I feel sorry for that quince bush, though; if the nibbling rabbit is anything like the rabbits here, that bush will be stripped to mere twigs in no time. Although there was peril to my keyboard when I read that you like saying turkey jerky, I needed the moment of continuing education: vegan jerky? I wonder if plants know what we’re doing with them.

    1. The bunnies stand up and nibble the lower portion of the quince. I don’t know how they avoid the thorns. I get stabbed every time I prune those bushes. If the plants are in a battle withcows and pigs, I’m not sure it’s one they want to win.

  8. Flowers are beautiful. Hot and humid is right. 5:20 am, and the humidity is 96%. It’s like winter only summer because you have to stay inside. I thought I left this weather in the midwest. :-)

    1. I had to abandon my shop yesterday. It got hot and humid inside, and hearing protectors became ear muffs.

Most excellent bunny portrait to start the post. And your blooms are lovely.

Turkey Jerky, it has a nice ring to it! Sounds like a song title Allan Sherman would come up with!

Love seeing those bees enjoying the bee balm. Rose of Sharon is beautiful, especially the Double. Never saw that before.

Your critters are looking mighty fine, and how nice to see Smokey. I wish the rabbits would munch on my quince! Seriously!

Old Glory looks beautiful with the sun shining through her.

Yesterday we were at 92*F with a ‘feels like’ of 102*F. Believe me, it absolutely felt like 102*F. 😡

    1. Laughing while remembering Allan Sherman, Ginger. It was hot and sticky here. I had to end my time in the shop before noon. Wearing hearing protectors became untenable.

The bunnies can prune the quince all they like. I’ll get them a ladder if they want more than they can reach.

Everyone is hiding in the shade somewhere today, Hardly any ones to be out there in this soup.

      Stay inside – stay cool.

  14. I have been vegetarian for a very, very long time but went vegan for about 5 years. Too many soy products. That vegan jerky is probably soy-based or TVP. Plus, vegan cheese is so gross. So back to vegetarian, happily.

Dan, that last photo is so cute. Tiny bunny and huge shrub. Reminds me of that old saying: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

    1. The vegan jerky is a soy product, Lois. When my wife’s church (Orthodox) observes their fasts, they are mostly vegan (they allow shell fish and fish on some days). There are a lot of products catering to that market, but not a lot of good ones.

I think that bunny can do it, if he wants to 😉

  16. Having never eaten any jerky, if/when I do I’ll start with something more traditional like beef. Work my way up, or down, to vegan. 🫤

  17. Your flowers are gorgeous. Turkey Jerky is fun to say it makes me smile.

I haven’t tried vegan jerky I’m a beef jerky gal, but Baby Girl had some of her venison last season made into jerky and it was so good. She had some of those jerky sticks made too and they were delicious. Softer than the beef ones we buy in the store.

I hope the heat eases and you all get some relief soon.

    1. Thanks! My brother had some venison jerky that was very good. The pork jerky we get is softer than beef. We actually started getting it as a special treat for our dog. The forecast says “cooler” for the rest of the week, but that means 89. Lower than 93, but not what I’d call cool.

  18. I would have thought that vegan jerky would have tasted obnoxious. Or at least some of them. Love to see the menagerie. I have missed them.

  19. As a long time vegetarian I just have to say…some things probably shouldn’t be vegan-ized and suspect jerky might fall in that category. Unless it’s sweet potato jerky which is surprisingly quite tasty for an interesting chew. Happy mid-week. Try to stay cool. The West Coast’s heat wave is starting to arrive and ramp up-we’ll be in the triple digits for a few days. With the official arrival of autumn ‘just’ 73 days off, it can’t come soon enough for me. Heck, I’d gladly be happy needing to get out the snow shovel at this point. ;)

    1. Sweet potato jerky sounds interesting. We’re rolling with whatever the season throws our way. We had thunderstorms last night, but no relief from the heat. They just made it more humid.

  23. We have quite the crew in the yard these days. Unless the flag was lowered for a member of the local community, there was no reason for it to be lowered. I didn’t see anything on the Town’s website. The state’s website has nothing during the time period.

  31. Well, I’ve never tried any jerky so I’ve no clue what vegan jerky tastes like. I did my research on vegan jerky and read some of the comments on my way down here. In India, there is this unique trend that annoys me the most. People here prefer vegetarian cakes. These cakes have no egg, milk, or butter but other oils to give them a soft smooth texture. However, these people will consume eggs, milk, and butter individually or in other food products. In fact, if you look at statistics, India’s consumption of milk is increasing yearly. I’ve seen hundreds of people who love to add ‘extra cheese’ to their sandwiches, pizzas, pav bhajis, and whatnot, but they want a pure vegetarian cake. These days this vegan thing is quite trending here in India as well.
