Saturdays at the bar are always a nice way to escape. David and I are both retired, but we both have a Monday through Friday thing going. It may sound like leisure activity, but we see it as work and we come here to escape. Today, we’re dealing with weather and Linda’s Saturday prompt:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “can.” Use it as a noun or a verb. Enjoy!

SoCS by Linda G. Hill

If we were having a beer, it would be hard to avoid the overbearing topic of the week.

“Good afternoon, Dan. Hoping to find a cool spot and a cold beer?”

“I am, David.”

“Well, you boys have come to the right place, and you might be my only customers today.”

“Why’s that Cheryl?”

“The heat. The rain. Who knows? All I know is the patio is closed do to potential thunderstorms, and look around—you guys are all I’ve got.”

“It’s my turn to buy, Cheryl. Give Dan a large cold Modelo and I’ll have a John Howell’s Special. Why isn’t there any music?”

“We’re switching providers—don’t ask.”

“I could sing, David.”

“Dan, it’s bad enough that we’re having a heatwave. The second one of the summer, I might add, and there’s another one coming next week.

“That’s a great idea, but I don’t think I could pull it off.”

“What?”

We’re Having a Heatwave. It’s a perfect song, but no pun intended, I don’t think I can can-can. I mean, it was considered a little risqué when released.”

“I remember that song. It was a number one hit for Martha & the Vandellas in nineteen sixty-three. But I don’t remember it being risqué.”

“Wrong heatwave. Go back thirty years.”

“You boys are arguing over music that isn’t even playing?”

“It’s what we do, Cheryl. Where’ve you been?”

“I had to go downstairs for more John Howell’s Bourbon. Then I had to find the manager to unlock the liquor storage.”

“You keep the booze locked up?”

“Only the good stuff. I was tempted to pour you a glass of Woodford. I doubt you’d know the difference.”

“I’d know. So, Dan, why do I have to go back thirty years?”

“Ethel Waters sang We’re Having a Heatwave in a musical review called As Thousands Cheer. I prefer Ethel Merman’s version from Alexander’s Ragtime Band. That was in nineteen thirty-eight.”

“How’s that bourbon, David?”

“It’s fine, Cheryl. And it’s definitely John Howell’s.”

“You’re sure?”

“I am. Now stop messing with me.”

“Okay. Like I said, you’re my only customers.”

“Yeah, but you don’t mess with someone’s drink order. Right Dan? Dan, are you listening?”

“Yes, but I was recalling a time when my grandmother did just that.”

“Your grandmother? The one you call Sita?”

“Yes.”

“I suppose there’s a story coming. Cheryl, can you get ready with another round?”

“I have your bottle right here, and I’m two feet from the taps. I think I can make it, David.”

“Okay, Dan. The floor is yours.”

“This happened before I was born.”

“Then how do you remember it?”

“It was the stuff of legend around our house.”

“Where did this happen?”

“Kentucky. My mom and dad, my grandmother and maybe my brother went to a wedding.”

“That had to be a long drive back then. No highways to speak of in the early fifties.”

“Long and hot, not air conditioning, either. Anyway after the wedding, they were all at the reception. My mom was hot and thirsty. She asked the waiter for a glass of ice water.”

“When do we get to the part when Sita messed with the drink? I mean, you can’t mess with water.”

“You’d think. Sita spoke to the waiter in Syrian. She asked him to bring my mother a glass of anisette instead of water.”

“What happened?”

“Mom pounded that down.”

“That had to hurt.”

“Anisette’s not that strong, but it was surprise.”

“Well, I’m still drinking bourbon, but it’s getting low in the glass.”

“Here you go, David, a splash on the house. Dan, you want another beer?”

“Yeah,  but Modelo, not Bud Light.”

  2. we have a puddle near us that rarely dries up….Ruby always walked around it, she hated wet feet!

The heatwave song has always been a favourite of mine I remember we used to have old musicals on the TV on Saturday afternoon when I was a child . I loved all the big band and dance numbers.

    1. Maddie loved to walk in puddles. She would stand in that puddle and stare out at the park across the street. She would get so excited when I asked if she wanted to go into “Mitzi’s park.” (We called it that because our first setter loved that park).

I love the video. There are so many variations of that song.

I hope you get back toward heatwave temps in your neck of the woods.

    1. I wouldn’t sing in public either, Jo. My offer was more of a threat. Happy Saturday!

Your bed balm is impressive, as is Mr Buns.

    1. The bunnies are out early, eating before it gets too hot. Then they come out later when the shade from the bushes cools that side of our yard. The baby bunnies hide under the bee balm. We have to check before we water that.

  5. We are definitely having a heat wave, and I wish it would blow away. The folks up north had more rain than they wanted, and we’ve had almost none. Hot, humid, and dry. Mother Nature is on a tear. :-)

    1. She is, Judy. Looks like there’s no relief until Thursday. Even the rain doesn’t cool things off, but we do need the rain, so I’m not complaining about that.

    1. It is hot, GP. We do our best to roll with it, but these are tough days.

  7. those clips you posted were from a time when these entertainers worked without central air, its been so hot for so many days, we have to count our blessings that in 2024 there are places we can go to get out of the heat. Time was when there was little to no escape. does the beer help?

    1. It’s no surprise that theaters were some of the first places to become air conditioned. Still, the performers were under lights that even today are backing them. Beer feels good, but it doesn’t really help cool you. Water seems best, but, kinda bland 😉

  8. Great banter, Dan. Sorry I’m not here more often. Your post also made me realise how ignorant I’m about bourbon. I like a good Irish or Scotch, but very uninitiated to the world of bourbon.

    1. Well, John Howell’s is really Willett Reserve, and it’s very good. So is Woodford Reserve (actually, I lean toward that brand, but don’t tell John ;). I like Irish Whiskey, but I stopped drinking scotch many years ago. I’m gld you enjoyed the conversation.

You really ‘kicked the can down the street” today Dan. Don’t be so modest, I bet you can can-can!

Love the “Heat Wave” song no matter who sings it, but Martha and the Vandellas would be my preference. Mother Nature is really experiencing some vivid hot flashes, don’cha think?

The Bee Balm looks great and is making a lot of bees very happy. Linus’ pumpkin plants are a riot. I think you will have a bumper crop this year!

The reflection of Old Glory in the fire pit, and without a doubt, Maddie’s Puddle are my favorites.

Hope you and the Editor can stay cool. Wish some of this rain the meteorologists keep predicting would get here. Grass is starting to sound ‘crunchy’!

    1. Thanks Ginger. Martha and the Vandellas had a great run with their song, of course, it’s a different song. The old one was a great way to get Linda’s prompt into play.

Somebunny or perhaps a squirrel seems to be eating the baby pumpkins and some shoots and leaves. Still, they’re leaving the garden plants alone for the moment, so we aren’t complaining. Although, if I trip over a pumpkin in October, I’m going to have words for Linus.

The bee balm is really doing great this year, and the bee love it.

The reflections in the puddles mad me happy and sad. Maddie loved standing in that puddle on the basketball court. She was such a silly dog.

It’s raining here this morning, and now we’re under a flood watch. Locusts are sure to be next. Have a good weekend.

  11. Well, Dan, we are starting a three-day party of heat and humidity, so am guessing this will be your second heatwave when it moves east. We have had no major rain since a week ago Friday, when heavy rains added to the June rain palooza and a damn broke about 40 minutes NW of us that caused much damage. We needed this past week where the rain has given us a break, but sent in the heat to take its place.

When in CO last year, at a time when the wildflowers were still in display, brother and I came across fields and fields of bluish purple and white Aspen Fleabane. They are like miniature daisies, so not sure why they call them fleabane. Are they the bane of all fleas?

Stay hydrated, Dan, and stay in your cool places. Hopefully, we can eventually find relief from rain and heat with a more positive weather forecast.

    1. That will be our third heatwave when it arrives, Lois, but there’s only one cool day in the forecast between this one and that one, so I don’t see the point.

No clue why they call them fleabane. We only seem to have white ones here, but they are pretty. I mow around them.

I worked a little while in my shop today, but not long. Inside now. I hope you can stay cool.

  12. Woodford is female founded and owned, isn’t it? I used to buy the small bottles of it for when I make vanilla ice cream. But then the distributor for the liquor store changed brands so now I’ll be experimenting with some vanilla-flavored bourbon, instead.

Stay indoors. We have heat advisories today. I did some yard work this morning and am in to stay. Happy weekend, Dan.

  17. We have a heatwave every year. Right now it is in the high 90s and expected to be over a hundred next week. We are coming into the season we call Hells Back Porch. Usually get 60 + days over 100. Thanks for the mention and the photos were terrific.

  19. Very clever way to work in the can-can. I think I remember the Andrews Sisters version, but I like this one better.

And I do think that’s flea bane. It was all over Central Park, and that’s what I concluded.

My favorite photo is the close up of the leaves.

And those beers look very inviting…(K)

    1. Thanks Kerfe. The fleabane is pretty. We only have one little patch near the driveway and another bit in the back yard.

A lot of singers and bands recorded that song, with many variations on the lyrics. I’ve listened to many versions, they’re all fun.

I always like finding the dry leaves with the sun behind them. I also enjoy the cold beers.

      I hope you’re having a nice weekend.

  20. I remember that song. I think the Ethel Merman version is the one I remember. We too are having a heat way up here but not as bad as the one we had several weeks ago, we were well into the 40s, over 100. I was not impressed. I like the rain when I’m on the inside but the humidity is killing me, figuratively speaking.

  27. Where’s the rest of the Sita story? I know you said it was short, but this is too short! What happened to your mom? I have to think that downing a glass of anisette when expecting water would be the wors’ t’ing. I love that white Rose of Sharon, but I don’t know how much I’m going to love having this song stuck in my head, which it is. I didn’t have to listen to Ethel; I just had to read the title, and, blam, there it was, going ’round and ’round. I didn’t know the song was frowned on when it first came out. Boy, have things changed!

    1. I’m sorry for the short length. This was before I was born, so I only no how my mother complained about it. She didn’t say what happened afterwards. I imagine many comments in Syrian and my dad trying to thread the needle between his wife and his mother.

Sorry about the song being stuck in your head, Ethel Merman can do that. Thanks for the supreme effort in making this comment. I was worried you’d never get out of the WordPress Zone.

Thanks for the postlude about the Sita story. As I’ve said to my cousins, family is always an unfinished story. In this case, it’s probably more fun to imagine what happened than to know what happened.
