Welcome to Thursday Doors! This is a weekly challenge for people who love doors and architecture to come together to admire and share their favorite door photos, drawings, or other images or stories from around the world. If you’d like to join us, simply create your own Thursday Doors post each (or any) week and then share a link to your post in the comments below, anytime between 12:01 am Thursday morning and Saturday noon (North American eastern time). If you like, you can add our badge to your post.

First off—There will be No Thursday Doors next week! Also, when I prepare the Sunday Recap this week, I am going to limit it to the automated process. That means, you need to leave a link in the comments if you want your post in the recap.

One of the first days when I was visiting my brother he took me over to see the Student Union at Iowa State University. Unlike the relatively modern student union I shared last year from West Virginia, the Memorial Student Union is a historic building that began its life with several floors of hotel rooms.

I was visiting during new student orientation, so our exploration of the building was limited, but I found some doors, and we found some of the historic hardware my brother remembered but which seemed to have been replaced (they haven’t gotten to the upper floors yet).

I hope you enjoy the doors in the gallery. I also hope you’ll take a few minutes to visit the doors mentioned in the comments by the other participants. I will include them in a recap on Sunday, but other than that, I won’t be posting until Monday, August 12th. I will hang a placeholder post here for those of you that ignore the fact that there is no Thursday Doors.

I hope you all have a great weekend and wonderful week.

Since this is my last chance to remind everyone about my latest novel, I’m going add the new version of my little billboard.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  1. Very stately buildings and doors, Dan. I also like the cute fire hydrant, which is a door to water for pumping. Just saying. I’ve been missing Thursday Doors because I’m just too busy to do much visiting of other blogs, but I miss it and will get back to it, hopefully soon.

    Here is mine:

    1. I don’t know. My brother wanted to take me there specifically to see the door knobs. We were both disappointed when we saw that they had been replaced on the first few floors. He had the idea to venture higher in the building, and happily, we found one of the old sets.

Great photo today on your site.

  12. What an imposing building! I like the sense of age there, and I cannot imagine getting rid of that hardware — it’s beautiful. Does it need to be hand-polished? So sad when details like that are gone. The hall of honor is certainly sobering. You sure found a great place for doors! And I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that those are doors on the fire hydrant — they open and close, don’t they? Enjoy your break!

    1. Thanks Maureen. I appreciate the support for including the fire hydrant. I don’t know why they felt the need to replace that door hardware, but I’m glad we were able to find one of the older sets still in place. We stayed for a good while in the hall of honor. To see names from WWI, WWII and all the way up through Afghanistan was indeed sobering. When I think of my life since graduating and realizing that these people didn’t have that kind of experience. It’s sad.

  18. Wow! A stunning gallery of doors Dan! I love them all. The door with the sign “Come in the Art is Fine” is pretty cool. The main outdoor photo with fountain looking to the entrance door is grand, I love it!!. Your photos are amazing works. I have said before I like how you find and capture light reflections.

The door with the wood panel or slatted wood design ( I want to guess the style is Morrocan-ish?) is an elegant and grand doorway. The honors hall is beautiful elegant and creates awe with those grand columns.

Shout out to the excellent door handle and ornate brass fixtures!! Very beautiful design and crafting. It is hard to find type of quality these days in finishings. I am sure they have their reasons for replacing them. They deserve to go in a musuem of some sort.

Thank you Dan for a wonderful tour of the Student Union. I have been in few Student Union buildings here, and I have to say none of the look this grand. A great share as always.’

All the best and saft travels on your holiday/hiatus.

The door hardware is magnificent. Why would they replace it? Lots of beautiful doors here Dan. That “older” door on the upper floor is a knockout!
