Happy Saturday! David and I are at the bar, after a few days of pretty nice weather. The week started out with some violent storms, but the worst ones were in southeast Connecticut. Here in north-central CT, we got a lot of rain, but almost no flooding. Thanks to everyone that checked on our status. Connecticut is the third-smallest state in the country, but our weather can still be regional in nature. So, under cool clear skies, we’re gathered inside to celebrate the end of this week. While we’re here, we will attempt to work harder at Linda’s challenge.

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “hap.’” Find a word that starts with “hap” and use it any way you’d like. Enjoy!

SoCS — Linda G. Hill

If we were having a beer, Cheryl would have some news for us.

“Hey guys. Are you two coming in with clearer minds than last week?”

“We’re always clear-headed, Cheryl. At least until we leave.”

“That’s not what I’ve heard, Dan.”

“What have you heard? And from whom have you heard it.”

“I received notes from Lois and Ginger asking me to give David extra cherries. Apparently, Curley forgot, and David didn’t notice.”

“You’re right Cheryl. I didn’t realize until I was home, that there were no cherries in my bourbon.”

“Well, here’s a glass of John Howell’s Bourbon with six cherries, along with a snifter of seltzer and a glass of ice.”

“What about me?”

“Here’s a glass of Modelo, Dan. You’re still pretty boring.”

“Cheers, Dan.”

“Cheers, David. I take it you had a good week.”

“I did. I was happy to see the rain end, though. My lawn was getting rather unruly.”

“I thought you have people to take care of that.”

“I do, but they couldn’t get out, and then they got backed up.”

“Did you have to cut it yourself?”

“Cut it myself? I don’t even own a lawn mower, Dan. But I did have to live with it being much longer than I like.”

“How would you like to have your yard covered with pumpkin patches?”

“I don’t think I could deal with that, Dan. What are you going to do with the pumpkins?”

“The bunnies are eating them.”

“I guess that solves that problem.”

“Not really. The bunnies, how should I put this, deposit the seeds, along with a healthy dose of fertilizer, and now we have even more pumpkin plants.”

“You have your own ecosystem, Dan.”

“We do, but it’s a happy place.”

“What about the remains of the pumpkins the bunnies don’t eat?”

“I think we have a possum. They like to eat stuff like that. Plus, some birds like to snack on the seeds once the pumpkins are broken open.”

“Do you think this will jeopardize Linus’ chances of impressing the Great Pumpkin?”

“No. I think his patch is pretty sincere.”

“You boys want another round?”

“We do, Cheryl, and let’s see if Dan is up for buying us a pizza.”

“Why am I buying? I bought last week.”

“Yeah, but I didn’t get any cherries, so it doesn’t count.”

“Who made that rule, David?”

“I think it was either Lois, or Ginger. You want to take it up with them?”

“One large pizza, Cheryl. Sausage, onions and peppers, please.”

  1. Good morning Dan. David’s good a getting you to buy isn’t he ..bless. We have the rain that has just left you….. Of course we have it’s a Bank holiday! Your photos are lovely today. The leaf that’s back lit looks like a Russian Dancer to me and he’s there again in the second leaf. There’s lots of beautiful light in the photos…it’s that time of year isn’t it!

Linus’s pumpkin patch looks brilliant and it seems everyone is benefiting from bit. …stay well and dry and have a good week! 💜💜💜

    1. Russian dancer, I like that. It does seem to have the strength of a dancer. I love this time of year, when the light becomes part of my pictures. Sorry about sending you the rain, but we were glad to see it go. I hope you have a good holiday. Everyone is enjoying the pumpkin patch.

  2. Nice photo of the moon! It sure put on a show this week! Your pumpkin patches are most impressive, and what a system you have going there; it really keeps itself going, doesn’t it? The sun inside that clump of grass is beautiful. The leaves are starting to change here, and some are coming down already. It always seems too early.

    1. I wish we could take credit for the pumpkin patch. Of course, we wish my wife’s zucchini grew as well. We could learn a lot about sustainable farming from these guys. I’ve only noticed a few isolated leaves turning, but it does seem too soon. I think our long hot dry spell hurt the trees more than we realized.

      1. I agree about the damage from the heat. My poor lilac got fried. It’s making a comeback, but struggling. Now the sticky heat is back. You’ll be getting more good pictures of grounded leaves, I bet.

        1. Our lilacs all suffered. A couple are almost bare. I hope they come back.

    1. We haven;t seen who has been eating, but the new pumpkin plants are showing up near areas where we’ve seen bunny poop. We haven’t put out pumpkin seeds for a long time, so the new plants are from new seeds. We often find the bunnies under the leaves, especially during the day when they can get some shade.

    1. Thanks Judy. It has been fun to see how this has played out once we decided to let the pumpkins grow.

  5. Love the story of the pumpkin patch rotational, Dan. David just doesn’t understand.

    1. Well, David has one of those pristine lawns, and I’m sure his people wouldn’t want to be mowing around pumpkin plants.

  6. Beautiful photos and great dialogue, Dan. Like you, I’m harvesting squash and pumpkins – and pumpkins are the winners. 🌞

  7. A pumpkin patch, huh? It’s a thought for outside the garden here. Our bunnies have been mad since we put up fences, so maybe we can help them out with pumpkin greens next year. As if they are starving… 😉

    Have a wonderful weekend, Dan!

    1. It’s a little more complicated, Mary. One of the squirrels planted the original pumpkins. Now it seems everyone is involved.

      Have a great weekend.

  8. Glad David got his cherries! Now the world is right again!

Who knew all your critters would turn into such fine gardeners! Linus is the Man of the Hour.

We have leaves changing color and falling. Also a few plants that don’t look like they’re going to survive the oppressive hot weather we had or the days of pounding rain. Sigh……

Love the moon shot and the sun sparkling through the trees.

Hope your weekend is pleasant and relaxing.

    1. David is grateful to you and your sidekick, Lois for alerting Cheryl to the horrible oversight. No cherries – how dare they.

The back yard makes us smile, Ginger. Everyone is eating and everyone is happy.

I hope you have a great weekend.

  9. Linus would be most proud of your little patch, Dan. I think it’s a riot that the bunnies planted their own food. 🐰

David cracks me up with his lawn. My next-door neighbor mows his yard twice a week…whether it needs it or not. 🙄 He’s started cutting on the diagonal now–ballpark grass? In our heat?! This guy is a glutton for punishment!

Have a great weekend. That cherry rule and picking up the tab….it is definitely a thing.

    1. David sends a thank you to yo and Ginger. He got extra cherries and a free drink, They bunnies are keeping the crop alive, and we’re mowing around the pumpkins. Our neighbor also is in the twice-a-week club, but hasn’t started cutting on the diagonal. I swear I can’t tell the difference when he cuts his grass. When I cut mine, people notice.

  10. Ha! So, David’s playing to the gallery to take up for him? I admit I was distracted… I can’t stop thinking about that perfect looking crust on the delicious pizza. The critters are looking lovely. Hugs.

    1. That pizza is really good, Teagan, but it has to be eaten there. It does not travel well. By the time I get it home, it’s kind of sad.

      The critters are all happy

  11. Glad to hear you missed the worst of the weather! Whew! If a bunny sees its shadow does that mean only two more weeks of summer? 😉

    1. Hahaha – I think we should start something like that! I don’t know about summer, but I could be done with 90-degree days.

  12. I’m glad David his cherries this week, Dan. We may get some rain today we’re in a little cold front then back to the 90’s next week.

The critters sure are feasting in your pumpkin patch. The Pumpkin blossoms on top of the new little pumpkin looked like ice cream swirl. 😊

  14. I now have a hankering for pizza, Dan. You also have me thinking fondly of the butterfly bush we had in Illinois. It was right outside the big living room window and attracted not only butterflies, but hummingbird moths and bees as well. I got some good photos through the glass.

    1. The pizza is a regular, Janet. The butterfly bushes are new. We planted them last fall, but they are really thriving.

  16. I can see clearly now, the rain is gone. Something something something in my way. We had the rain and some flooding but now we’re pretty dry too. Love the leaves. I keep reminding myself that it is almost that time of year.

  19. Ha! I noticed that too, but I thought in my absence, a new protocol may have been initiated. Or that David developed a sudden aversion to cherries. Lolol.. careful, I think I’ve seen at least one horror film regarding possessed pumpkins…

    1. Uh oh, the pumpkins that ate Connecticut? I think my week away had a lasting effect on quality control, Cheryl. At least it was Curley’s mistake and not yours. This is precisely why I have backup bartenders.

  20. We’ve had volunteer tomatoes before but never pumpkins. I’m curious, what does one do with a plethora of pumpkins anyway? Maybe it’s best that the bunnies share in the bounty.

    1. Last year, we only had two that survived into October. We cut them up and left the pieces in the yard. They were gone in a few days. Right now, we have about a dozen, mostly small ones but one or two larger ones. Somebody is trying to eat them, but one is hanging on a fence. It may survive.

  21. So nice you include the bunnies in your landscaping plan. So long as the squirrels don’t horde the banquet. The hoodlums in my neck of the woods tend to taking things over and a certain pup is not happy about that. He’s actually been showing Elsa the ropes and she goes one way while he goes the other. Guess who’s in the middle being stretched as if I was on a rack.

    1. Ouch! That plan only works when you’re off-leash, guys. Our last dog was at peach with the critters in the yard. We had squirrels come within the radius of her leash, but she never bothered to move toward them. I can’t get as close now as I did when I had her with me.
