Happy last Saturday of August and the oft-considered end of Summer. Monday is Labor Day here in the United States the traditional start and end of a lot of things that no longer pay attention to the informal calendar. At least Linda still pays attention. So, while David and I spend a quiet hour at our favorite watering hole, we’ll reminisce about those lost traditions and hope that we can cover the prompt.

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “school.’” Use it as a noun or a verb; use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

SoCS — Linda G. Hill

If we were having a beer, you’d be in a reflective mood.

“Happy Saturday, Dan.”

“Same to you, David. Aren’t you drinking today?”

“Curley is out on the patio. I told him I could wait until you got here. Here he comes.”

“Hi David, Dan. I’ll pour you your usuals, and David, I will put three cherries in your John Howell’s Bourbon — Cheryl gave me an earful about ‘pulling a Skippy’ as she called it.”

“No real harm done, Curley, but I’ll take those cherries, just the same. I wonder how Skippy is doing, Dan.”

“Pretty well, I think. I saw his name listed in another play at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven.”

“Wow! What play?”

“Clue?”

“I bet he plays Colonel Mustard. The murder takes place in the lounge and the victim’s martini contained poison.”

“Don’t pick on Skippy, David. Besides, you’re remembering the game we played as kids. The play is based on the movie. Fewer rooms, weapons and suspects.”

“He you go, gentlemen, a John’s Howell’s Special and a cold glass of Modelo — woops!”

“What just happened, Curley?”

“I guess ice formed on the bottom of that glass. Good thing it’s a slow day or someone would be wearing a beer.”

“Give me a minute, David and I’ll toast to the end of summer.”

“Here you go, Dan. One cold beer. Someone will be out in a few minutes to clean that mess.”

“To the end of summer, Dan, although I think it already ended.”

“You refer to the weather? It’s cooler, but that’s not a bad thing, David.”

“No. I can deal with cooler temps. I hope they stick around. I’m talking about all the other things we used to wait for Labor Day for.”

“I may regret this, but what things, David?”

“School for one. There were school buses on the road all last week. Remember when school started the day after Labor Day?”

“I do. It starts much earlier now.”

“It does, and the stores have been selling Halloween candy for weeks. I waited as a kid brought a cart out of the back of Target, and I saw Christmas trees in the storeroom. They’ll be selling those soon.”

“They do tend to rush the season.”

“Look here, they already have Octoberfest on tap, as well as…Curley what the heck is that?”

“That, my friend, is a brand new pumpkin spiced ale.”

“Ugh. This is why I drink bourbon. Nobody messes with bourbon.”

“Au contraire, David. Check this out.”

“Southern Tier Pumking – Pumpkin Whiskey? That’s sacrilege, Curley.”

“You want a taste?

“No!”

“I think you should put that away, Curley. David is getting spun up.”

“I am spun up, Dan. Mainly because of the biggest, and in my humble opinion the worst, change with respect to Labor Day. Years ago, the general election campaigns didn’t really start until after Labor Day.”

“Now they start after the inauguration.”

“I know you’re trying to be funny, but it’s close to the truth. I am so sick of…”

“David.”

“What?”

“We agreed, and Cheryl requires that we don’t ever talk about politics at the bar. You don’t want to get Curley in trouble again, do you?”

“Okay, okay. I’ll give it a rest.”

“That’s good.”

“You guys want some food?”

“Mushrooms, Curley. Two orders of Teagan’s Stuffed Mushrooms.”

“Coming right up!”

  1. The other day, I was just thinking about school starting after Labor Day. School here started a couple weeks ago. Halloween decorations have been out for about a month and some places even have a few Christmas items out. Grrrr! I do not like it! Life is rushed enough as it is. And as for pumpkin spice, I am the pumpkin spice grinch. I want pumpkin spice in my pumpkin pie and that’s just about all. 😖

Have a good 3-day weekend, Dan, Although, when you’re retired, I guess it mostly just means a few things aren’t open on Monday.

    1. Thanks Janet. Three day weekends just mean a little extra shopping to avoid the crowds. The best thing about being retired is being able to take advantage of the slow periods in stores and restaurants. I hope you have a nice easy weekend.

I did have to go into Hartford, twice this past week. I need to add 10-15 minutes to my plan due to the school buses on the highway.

  3. Hi Dan as I see it the trouble with today is money and the fat cats wanting it! Easter starts after Christmas, then it’s Summer, travel agents slurg all over the place, then Autumn and Halloween then it’s Christmas….as for politics…..mmm Oh! Four strangers just came in! I am off….love the photos and the crow video Have a great weekend.💜

    1. I hope you enjoyed that visit, Willow. Much better than the subject you were considering. It is all about money. We have to have something out there driving sales. God forbid we just had a normal week without something special to buy and prepare for. Enjoy this weekend.

    1. The baby bunnies love to hide under the pumpkin leaves. It’s cool, and the grass is longer. I like Octoberfest, but I don’t know why Sam Adams thought they needed a pumpkin variety. I don’t like it when brands feel they have to expand and dilute what was once a special thing.

    1. A restaurant we used to go to had pumpkin ice cream (back before they felt the need to call it pumpkin spice). That was good, and they served it with a slice of hot apple pie. Otherwise, just pumpkin pie for me. I’m glad you like it, GP, you have a nice long season to enjoy.

  9. Thank you! I got more than one laugh out of this (I know now to swallow before I read). I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of us are remembering the past, when Labor Day marked the end of good times and the return to homework. The school bus next to the empty playground says it all — that’s a great image! I listened to the crow in the video, and I’m almost sure he was counting out loud, leaving us to wonder what.

      1. It did occur to me that the reference to “boring breakfast” had to do with my cereal and coffee, and I did linger over those pancakes, but the crow and the playground won out! A wonderful weekend to you too, Dan — thanks!

  11. Your yard is lovely, Dan. I love the buffet but mostly those pumpkin vines. They look wonderful!

I am so happy to hear about Skippy. I have a soft spot for that boy and the fact that he is making good onstage just warms my heart.

It is so crazy that school started here August 12. Then they were letting the kids out early because it was so darn hot. Why not just wait until after Labor Day? Nobody asked me…🙄

    Have a great weekend!

    1. The pumpkin vines are everywhere, Lois. They’re crawling up the fence and they’re making it hard to navigate with a mower. But they are popular. Someone is eating the pumpkins, bunnies are enjoying the shade from the broad leaves and the bees love the blossoms. We often find bees sleeping in the blossoms (how cool is that?)

I have to put some good news in about Skippy, to keep his fans satisfied. I hope you have a great weekend.

  13. I didn’t enjoy my school years for a variety of reasons, but I did survive them! :+)

I’m the oddball who doesn’t like pumpkin pie, so I detest that this time of year everything edible has to also have a pumpkin version. Why?

But I do love your pumpkin patches Dan! Linus could have a blog of his own talking about those patches and the critters who visit them.

More and more leaves falling here. I came across four ginormous mushrooms in my garden last week. I swear they were each the size of half a large grapefruit!

Old Glory still flying proud surrounded by all the trees.

    Happy holiday weekend Dan.

    1. I did survive my school years, Ginger, and I am sad to say that a couple of my friends did not.

I love pumpkin pie, but I could do without a pumpkin variety of everything, including Cheerios – for the love…

Linus can be quite proud of his pumpkin patches. I think he has found the essence of sincerity. I can’t imagine the Great Pumpkin not paying him a visit and leaving him a big pile of peanuts.

Those mushrooms popped up so fast. They are large, and there are even larger ones in the park.

I hope you have a great holiday weekend.

  14. I was just thinking the same thing about school when I saw the kids waiting for the school bush while on my walk 2 weeks ago. Two weeks ago they went back to school!!

Then I saw fall decor and Halloween candy filling the seasonal sections at the grocery store this week, and yesterday I see on my video feed on YouTube Michael’s is running a series of videos on all the Christmas trees they’re going to be carrying this season. I do miss waiting until after Labor Day for all that to start showing up.

However, the beer at the top of your post tells me I better get up to Trader Joe’s and pick up some German Beer while they have our favorites else they’ll be gone before I know it!

I hope you have a great holiday week-end!

    1. There are some bright spots in the season, but I feel bad about the kids going back so early. By the time Halloween gets here, they will have been selling candy for almost 90 days! I don’t get it.

  18. Dan, this post struck just the right chord today. It was really good to just sit back and hang out with you and the crew at the bar.

Oh — re your pumpkin patch. I’ve enjoyed those photos and captions a lot, but I might see it in a new light. I was doing research for the next book in the Medium’s Peril series, and ran across some Romani/gypsy folklore about vampire pumpkins (and watermelons)! :D I kid you not. If you look at it objectively, it really isn’t any more outrageous than any other folk legend, but… LOL. Dang-it, I’d like to use it in the story, but it’s too laughable. Still… maybe I’ll find a way to at least do a side scene with it. Anyhow, if you ever see what looks like a drop of blood on the skin of one of those pumpkins, run for your life! Hugs.

    1. Yikes! Thankfully, the bunnies and the squirrels and perhaps a possum are eating most of the pumpkins. Otherwise, my wife suggested we might have a remake of “The Attack of the Killer Tomatoes” on our hands.

And how right you are about the over pumpkin-ization of the world. Pumpkin bourbon? Eek! As always, a terrific gallery of photos, Dan. Wishing you and yours a very safe and happy Labor Day.

And theirs is at a totally different time. You’d hardly know it until you go to town and find all the stores closed, as well as most restaurants that aren’t owned by Americans. 🤭Politics… well at least has gone from bleak to carnival status.
