Almost 20 years ago, I acquired a large metal cabinet which I thought would be great for storing tools and supplies for woodworking. The problem with the cabinet was that it only had four shelves. Once filled, the cabinet was essentially a large pile of stuff, separated by four shelves. Large items — like tools — were easy to find. Smaller things, like accessories and supplies were much more difficult to keep organized.

Earlier this year, I bought a tool cabinet to replace the large unwieldy box. The tool cabinet has drawers of various sizes that hold specific items and are easy to access. As I was transferring the contents, I discovered many items I though I had either lost or used and which I had replaced. Thus I realized the technique for finding anything you have lost.

Look everywhere the items should be — replace the item — destroy the packaging and receipt for the newly purchased item — find the original. This is guaranteed to work.

One-Liner Wednesday by Linda G. Hill

The featured image today is a drawer full of sanding disks and disk holders for one of my sanders. Everything in that drawer was purchased because I couldn’t find the one I already had. The disk holder cost $18, and I bought two over the years, even though I already had two in that cabinet. As for sanding disks, I have enough to last me and our daughter several years.

Faith (daughter) and I visited Old Sturbridge Village on Saturday for a celebration of bees. On Monday. we made our annual trip to the Big-E — New England’s great agricultural fair. You’ll hear (and see) more from these visits in the near future.

In what could have been a one-liner, when I went to order my slice of blueberry pie, the clerk asked, “Do you want it with or without ice cream?

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  1. I know the feeling well. Plus the “what’s this? I don’t need this.” throw out then realise what it was when you go to use a tool. Me. Angle Grinder disc for different size wheels 🙄
I inherited my Dads and my brothers wife’s fathers jars of bit and pieces. I have used a lot but there is so much stuff I know if I toss out I will want to use something.

    1. When I expanded my workshop, I had to do a deep clean/organize drill. I threw out a lot of things I hadn’t used in years. I threw out some things I had inherited that I’m sure my father hadn’t used in years before he died. I have found a need for many of those things. It is some sort of law of the universe.

  2. There went another laugh-out-loud. “Guaranteed to work.” Oh, yes. Sometimes I wish I could travel back in time and ask my younger self what the heck I’m keeping this for. That’s a great capture of what appears to be a morning chat between pumpkin and morning glory. Blueberry pie with ice cream? Gorgeous! As always, I love the photos of OSV, but Christmas? Really? I think those sheep express Christmas better than Lowe’s does!

    1. It seems wrong to have Christmas and Halloween decorations being sold at the same time. Thank goodness we don’t decorate for Thanksgiving – they seem to have forgotten that holiday exists. I’m not sure who brought the morning glory to the yard, but enough water gets splashed out of that birdbath to keep it alive in the dry spell we’ve been having.

    1. I couldn’t believe how many sanding disks I found. I just bought packs of two different grits when I sanded that bench, And, I bought one of the backing pads. I was sure I bought two the last time I had to replace one, but I could not find one. I even knew it was in that cabinet. Tots a Lot is a great place to start the fair.

  4. Hi Dan – I do like to be organised … I use a small tool box, with tray, for my jewellery … otherwise I just ‘try’ to be efficient! Excellent photos – and so glad you’ve had those days out … blueberry pie and ice-cream look rather delicious. Cheers Hilary

  5. I saw an ad for the Big E and knew you’d be checking it out. The food looks amazing, and why even ask ‘with or without ice cream.’ :-) We have a cabinet in the garage with two shelves of ‘stuff,’ and I usually buy something new as well. Thanks for the reminder to clean it up. I do not want to go to Lowes or anywhere else and see Christmas decorations now. I wish consumers would band together and not buy holiday items until November 1, and maybe they’d stop putting them out so early.

    1. I get the pie and ice cream in the New Hampshire building. They used to have it in a booth where you could also get broccoli cheese soup in a bread bowl. Now, the main food attraction in your State’s building is Mac & Cheese. There was a line out the door to get a bowl of that. The pie and ice cream has been moved near the exit. I wasn’t surprised by the Christmas decorations, but having them across from 15′ skeletons dress as “Death” is not what I want to see in September.

    1. I managed to avoid the urge to fix the cabinet I was replacing and try to find another place for it, GP. It was like the lost elephant graveyard for tools. The good news is that I had a note to buy a replacement blade for a small circular saw. I found three in that cabinet, so I can tear up that note.

    1. Thanks Frank. I knew from the get-go that that cabinet was going to be a problem. IT had too much space between shelves, and the empty space was hard to resist. On the other hand, I can always find the ice cream.

  8. I take after my dad in that I like things organized. BUT, I still manage to occasionally buy something new because even though I’m sure I have it, I can’t find it! My dad had every drawer and shelf in the (his!) basement clearly marked to boot.

Selfishly I’m glad you and Faith got to go to the Big E and OSV because then I get to go too! Just love those sheep. The pie and ice cream is Heaven on a plate.

Christmas display at Lowe’s already? I can’t stand it. These stores take the ‘special’ out of all our holidays because they have commercialized them to death. Then there’s TV…don’t get me started!

Have a great day and hope the rest of your week is fantastically organized!

    1. I have about 1/3 of my storage labeled, Ginger and I do a pretty good job. I discovered a method that I need to continue. I print the categories of stuff that in those drawer on business card stock. Then I stick those to the magnets they sell for business cards. I can cut out the categories and stick them to the drawers. It works well, but I’ve only done it on one of my oldest cabinets. I need to get printing and make my and your dad smile.

I love seeing the sheep at OSV. This was an extra visit for us, but it was a beautiful day. I’ll share some doors and more photos as we go forward.

I hadn’t thought about it, but you are absolutely right about stores “taking the ‘special’ out of all our holidays.” I’m holding off until after Thanksgiving to watch my favorite version of A Christmas Carol (the one with George C. Scott).

      Have a great week!

That looks like the right amount of ice cream in the first photo. I would not have objected to another scoop.

What kind of question is that about ice cream with your pie?! 😄 That looks so good!

    1. I threw out so so so many of those when I retired, Lois. I also threw out the slot covers for PCs back when you had to add cards to them to do things like have sound or a modem. AND, I threw out a box of screws to hold those covers in place!

Yes, who needs to ask that question about pie?

  11. All summer I’ve been sorting through drawers & boxes of stuff that for the life of me I cannot explain why I kept all these years. I worry that I’ll throw out the wrong things, but if I can’t identify it it’s a goner. I consider this a devil may care attitude, btw.

    1. Ha! Or directions. The first time I took Faith to New York City for a day, we were stopped by a Japanese couple. They didn’t speak English very well, but they were asking directions to the Library. We asked them to verify that because we were directly across the street from the main entrance.

  21. Your tool cabinet reminded me of my sister-in-law’s pantry. We were helping her clean it out before a kitchen project and came across at least six unopened, or partially opened canisters of panko bread crumbs. Apparently, whenever she needs some for a recipe, she can’t remember if she already has any (psssst: she does) and buys more.

Pie without ice cream? That’s like, well, pie without ice cream. Silly question.

  29. Last year, Sarah and I made some changes to our bedroom. So, we bought a make-your-closet style closet and MALM chest of drawer. Maybe you’re aware of it. The idea behind buying chest of drawers is that we wanted to sort things which was randomly lying around or beneath our bed. We got the product, assembled it, filled it up and now sometimes when we look for small items we often have no idea which drawer we put it in. Bigger products are easy to find because obviously they are big, but small items are like pebbles that snuck deep down and we got to remove a few items before we finally find that small item. Motto of the story – Life came full circle to us in just 6 months. :)
