With all the data Google collects about me and all the things around me, they aren’t too discerning about how they use it. Before we left for the Big-E, I wanted to check the policies about bags and cameras. There’s only one Big-E in the country, and it hasn’t moved during the 43 years I’ve lived here. Google wants me to let them use my location (that’s really all they want) to find results “closer to me.”

There’s only one Big-E

Maybe there are such things as stupid questions.

Results after searching Google for Big-E – for One-Liner Wednesday by Linda G. Hill

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  1. I never let g00gle find me on my computer even though they try all the time. I did a #SevenforSeptember post today about the Victoria Hotel in Goondiwindi and the same, g00gle wanted use my location. There is only one in Australia and it’s no where near my place 🙄

    1. They just want to know where you are to help target their ads. It would be one thing if I was searching for a coffee shop, but not necessary for a unique thing. Good luck hiding.

  3. Does the E in The Big E stand for a certain search company’s Encroachment? 🤔

    1. It might, Dave. I certainly won’t be going to the Big-G if I can avoid it.

  4. First I had to find out what the Big E was. Then I joined you in your editorial about Google; I don’t make a single keystroke these days without the feeling I’m being watched. It’s scary how Google has become so integral to my life and yet no way do I trust it. On the other side of life, there are pumpkin vines. They are beautiful and a real tribute to Linus!

    1. I should have explained the Big-E – the Great New England Fair – well, so they say. It’s a tradition of our to go, and we missed last year due to over-crowding the day we tried to visit. Google is intrusive in a way that makes my skin crawl. The pumpkin vines have taken over the yard, but we’re mostly allowing them to grow where they want. We see Linus burying peanuts, he’s a strong, handsome little bugger, and all the digging has (according to my wife) given him a nice 6-pack.

      1. Thanks for the laugh! I have no doubt your squirrels are the Charles Atlas of the squirrel set.

        1. We have some lay-abouts as well. They seem to know they will get fed regardless. But Linus remembers his squirrel training.

  5. The trailer repairs look A+, but who would expect anything less. :-) I use Google like everyone else, but I certainly don’t appreciate their tracking.

    1. I am hoping to put this trailer away forever (for me), so a little extra care was worth it. Thanks! Google is so obvious now that it makes me trust them even less.

  6. Google has taken the term “Big brother is watching you” to new heights. It’s really scary.

Linus must be exceedingly proud of himself, and rightly so.His pumpkin patch has filled a lot of critter’s bellies.

Your trailer looks brand new. Nice job…..as always. Looks like it woolly withstand many years of use.

Love your header photo! Nice shot of Old Glory in Memorial Park.

Happy Wednesday Dan. Have a great rest of the week with some much needed rain in the way.

    2. Thanks Ginger. I hope that rain arrives this week. They said it was coming last week, and it never showed. It’s a good thing Linus planted some pumpkins near the birdbaths. We’ll line the pumpkins up in the back for anyone who wants to sample Linus’ harvest. I don’t think he minds.

Google has gone beyond watching from a distance. Now they are in your face with the whole “we know when you’ve been sleeping, we know when you’re awake…” thing. I switched to Duck Duck Go on my phone. Not that it will hurt the Big-G all that much.

I am happy with the way the trailer turned out. I never expected to get 20 years out of a trailer I bought at BJ’s, but now I think it’s good for another 20 (at which point, I won’t care – if I’m here).

I had to walk around the park in a different direction to avoid the crews from Public Works. It was interesting seeing the memorial from a different angle. I’m glad you like it. I hope you have a good rest of the week.

    1. That tree was rocking and rolling this morning. Squirrels climbed up and blue jays flew in at the same time. The bunnies are quiet these days. We haven’t seen much of them. Don’t worry, though, I have a folder full of pictures I haven’t shared.

  9. When working and training others, Dan, I would always tell them, “There are no stupid (or dumb) questions.” Well, at least I wouldn’t feed into that. Nowadays, lots of dumb questions, or perhaps statements, out there.

Good job on the trailer and nice photos! I like the photo of the berries on the Korean dogwood. They look like tiny soccer balls.

Have a wonderful Wednesday and I’m glad you were able to get to the Big-E this year for a very specific reason. ;-)

    1. Thanks Mary. I always remember hearing “There are no stupid questions” and repeating that during training. Now, I’m not so sure.

Those berries do look like soccer balls.

  10. The trailer, the vines, Google…just a great, well-rounded post, Dan. It sickens me the amount of info that is online–complete birthdates?! Yes. It is almost like having a date breach is the least of our worries–Google has already posted most everything there is to know about us. Disheartening, really.

I am loving your pumpkin patch. Sally might be calling you her sweet Baboo, instead of Linus, with the great job you have done. 🎃

    1. I’m giving all the credit to Linus, Lois. He certainly knew where to plant. As for Google, I almost wouldn’t mind them having the information if they used it to make my experience better. All they seem to do is sell it to others. I just ignore online ads. The more they seem based upon information collected about me, the more I ignore the product.

The pumpkin patch is looking good too. Soon the Great Pumpkin will visit! LOL! I still love that Halloween Peanuts special. Well, I love them all.

Google collects way more info than it should! I’m glad you had a Not Now option.

    1. Thanks! I do think the Great Pumpkin will visit. Our yard is looking mighty sincere at the moment 😉🎃

I do my best not to give Google and all the apps I use, my location. I was in Home Depot yesterday. I looked up an item to see where it was in the store. I had already selected the store I was in – the store whose WiFi I was using – and they wanted my location. I went and asked a human.

  12. The pumpkin vine growing up a fence reminded me of a loofah gourd vine that grew up the entire side of our garage onto the roof. I did encourage it with a trellis, but it just kept going.

  14. LInus’ pumpkin patch looks totally sincere. The Great Pumpkin will be most pleased. Your trailer looks spanking new! The pumpkin blossoms look delicious — do you ever dip them in egg and/or milk and flour and/or cornmeal and fry them? I’m told they’re really good. On the cooking shows, they stuff big blossoms and fry them, but I’ve never tried that.

    1. Not pumpkins, but we have done that with zucchini blossoms. We’re leaving these out there for the bees. Some of the bees sleep in them – talk about a fairy tale bed. I do think the Great Pumpkin will visit – totally sincere pumpkin patch.

  17. Your trailer looks terrific, Dan. You did a great job on it. I love your photos. The pumpkin vines seem to know when it’s time to head out. I remember growing them in the Midwest and coming out in the morning to see the vines all flat with all the pumpkins sitting out in the open. It was a sign that winter was just around the corner.

    1. Whatever it is Google wants, they want more. The notion that knowing more about me will help them make my advertisement viewing more personal, makes me shake my head – as if that’s something I desire.

The pumpkin vines are fading, but Linus had a good crop.

  25. I always let Google know where I’m for a reason. I have this Google Opinion app where they send me surveys and I get paid for it. The amount stays in my Google Play account and I can buy apps, books games directly from that money. I know for many people personal information is critical, but I don’t think much about it. The government already has all my information and they sell it to crony capitalists to push their products so I’m not much worried about being exposed when a lot of my data is already in unsafe hands. My personal data (pupil and fingerprints) are connected to my financial data, that is connected to my income tax and that is connected to COVID details and SIM card details so when Apple users in India say they buy Apple for privacy, I’m not sure what privacy they’re talking about. If anyone gets into any government account all of us are screwed simulataneously irrespective of Android or iOS. Not trying to be pessimistic here, just saying what is.

    1. I think you understand this better than most people, Sharukh. I don’t see any need for Google to know my location with more accuracy than they already do based on my ISP. They just want it so they can tailor ads better and charge people more to show me an ad I’ll never respond to.
