We live on the west side of the Connecticut River. Most of the places we shop are located on the east side. There are two bridges, one is part of I-91 and has had lanes closed for construction for two years. It’s scheduled to reopen fully later this month. The other crossing is a local bridge that’s paired with a smaller bridge across the Windsor Lock Canal. On the west side of the canal is a grade-level railroad crossing.

While I was returning from the east side, the crossing gates came down and I was in line with about eight cars ahead of me. Without warning, two young people on a scooter wiggled up between the two lanes of cars — dumb enough. Then, the driver swerved between cars, rode up in the opposite lane and drove through the crossing gates a couple seconds ahead of the train. Our daughter summed up our thoughts:

If that was his girlfriend, I hope she dumps him.

One-Liner Wednesday by Linda G. Hill

I have a picture of the scooter, but I didn’t include it in case it could be identified.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

Bridge to Nowhere

  1. That red leaf is just lounging about❤️ Right now two of our main arteries in our small city of Cheyenne are under construction. You can imagine the confusion and the irritation.😳😱

    1. I can. The highway bridge is under construction and the road on our side of the river of the smaller bridge is also under construction. The delays are hard to predict, but they can get very bad. The trains – which are a normal part of life around here – add to the frustration. People on our town forum have often shared stories about people running the gates.

That leaf does seem to know how to relax :-)

    1. Totally stupid, Darlene. Trains can’t stop, and you won’t survive that collision.

  3. You do get idiots about! There’s nothing more scary than the thunder of that train racing towards you. I’ve done it once on foot. Never again!

    1. I’m sure the person on the back of that scooter was scared. We’ve had reports (on our town forum) of people running the gates. The construction delays are frustrating, but not worth getting killed over. We also have people pulling onto the tracks in the hopes of being able to make a right turn on red.

  4. There are so many idiots about and over here footage gets put up and even on police TV programmes and the news itd utterly horrific what they do!

Your daughter is so right in what she said.

I love all the photos Dan! Hi to Linus and the foggy Old Glory 💜

    1. Thanks Willow. I doubt anyone around here follows my blog, but I had the thought that the father of that girl might see it and go ballistic. I hope that girl is never on the back of that scooter again.

Linus stands so proud. His pumpkins are fading, but he’s still burying peanuts.

  5. What a heart-stopper! Faith said it right. Don’t pass those genes along! On the other side of life, there’s Linus contemplating his handiwork. The bee. The bird. What great antidotes to idiots!

    1. “Don’t pass those genes along!” Now it’s me spitting my coffee onto the keyboard. Linus is still burying peanuts, even as his pumpkin patch fades. Smarter than at least one human.

  7. Train 1, Scooter 0. I’ve lost count of the number of deaths on our highways this year, and to challenge a train is either a death wish or pure stupidity. The trailer looks mighty spiffy. Good job.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. No chance a train is going to stop, and very little chance you’re going to survive the encounter. People on our town forum talk about people running those gates on a regular basis. It’s not going to end well. Traffic and pedestrian deaths are both up in CT.

I am happy with the way the trailer turned out. Good for many more years.

  10. The idiot driving the scooter wins the Jerk of the Year Award! He should have his head examined as should the person with him.

Beautiful Mocking Bird and I love seeing those bees looking so plump.

Wouldja look at Linus admiring one of his famous gardens! Too funny!

Looks like the snowblower is off for a winter checkup.

Old Glory looking mighty spiffy, even in the fog. That’s a great picture Dan.

    Happy Hump Day!

    1. Thanks Ginger. Unfortunately, I think that kid is a future candidate for a Darwin Award. Temping an oncoming train is just about the dumbest thing you can do.

Linus is still burying peanuts, and he does seem to be admiring his handiwork in the yard. The vines are fading, but there are many pumpkins to eat. We need to cut them loose and put them in the back – set up a buffet.

Seeing the flicker and the mockingbird made my day. Now that the leaves are thinning out, they’re much easier to spot, even on a foggy day.

The snowblower will be back way before I need it (I hope). Have yourself a great rest of this first week in October.

  12. That scooter driver probably didn’t have to be anywhere too pressing–just trying to impress his girlfriend. **hang on. watch this!** What a jerk. Faith nailed him correctly.

We don’t have a lot of different birds here, but enough that I have no idea what they are. Identify by their song? That is some kind of app!

Linus is so cute. And this is his big month to shine! I love that they have grown on their own. The Great Pumpkin will be smiling on your yard, Dan.

    1. I’m sure he was trying to impress her. What an idiot.

Look for Merlin Bird ID app by Cornell Labs – it’s free and it works on images and sounds. Lots of information about birds. This was the first time I used it on their call.

Linus takes pride in his work, and the exercise from digging (and tamping) has given him a cute little six-pack.

Hi Dan – it is horrific what people get up to isn’t it … though down here we can wait a while for the second train to come through … people still can’t wait – I hope Heaven is happy to have them. But Faith correctly commented … while perhaps the Mockingbirds gathered a flock to remind him forever – cheers Hilary

  25. Was the scooter rider Indian? I’m not trying to mock my country, but just that this is quite common in India. Such scenes are also depicted as ‘heroic’ in movies here. It’s how the protagonist cheats death and becomes this larger than life figure. Anyway, that’s just a molecule percentage of the rest of the Indians who are sensible enough to wait. We know how efficient our railway is and anybody crossing that line is the one who doesn’t believe in that efficiency.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I couldn’t see the rider, but this is not at all common here, but it has been happening more frequently, even with cars. The construction causes delays and frustration and then a train comes and adds to that. Me, I love to sit and watch the train.
