Happy first Saturday in October. I know, that doesn’t seem possible, but the calendar indicates that it’s true. David and I are at the bar but David was a late arrival. He gets uptight about my being late, and he’s even worse when he’s late. Cheryl and I are inclined to forgive and forget, we’ll have to how David feels. Oh, and we need to think about Linda’s prompt.

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “fork.” Use it any way you’d like. Enjoy!

SoCS by Linda G. Hill

If we were having a beer, you’d be late and shook up.

“Hi Dan, I’m sorry I’m late.”

“It’s no big deal, David. Your John Howell’s Bourbon is still room temperature. Your seltzer is cool, and Cheryl can get more ice.”

“What about your beer?”

“You think I was gonna let that get warm? We’re friends, but there’s a limit.”

“I see. Well, cheers. Here’s to safe travels.”

“That’s an odd toast. Can I assume you were stuck behind some activity.”

“More like an almost catastrophe.”

“I don’t follow you.”

“That’s a good thing because the truck that was following me almost hit me.”

“You’re not going anywhere, now. We’re here, we have drinks, we can order a pizza, and we can go home. How hard is that?”

“As long as we have the drinks. I could use one.”

“What happened?”

“On my way over, I was at the red light waiting to turn onto the on-ramp. A truck carrying two dumpsters took the turn from the exit ramp too fast and spilled the dumpsters.”

“Spilled them? Were they full of junk?”

“No, they were empty, but they ended up blocking the road and the ramp.”

“So, that’s why you were late.”

“Yes. I was stuck there until some big forklift thing came and picked up the dumpsters.”

“Could you have gone around the accident?”

“No. I couldn’t go anywhere. Besides, I don’t like change.”

“From the guy that orders the same complicated drink, served the same strange way, week after week, that doesn’t exactly qualify as a revelation, David. Did you guys mention a pizza?”

“Yes Cheryl. Meat lovers and another round, please.”

  1. Poor David! Stuck and then almost squashed. It’s a good thing he had the bar waiting for him! That Monarch is a beauty! As is the photo of the fall colors along the river. Of course the trestle is always photogenic. Sammy and Smokey are very busy, as are their cousins here. They are so practical: a peanut for now, a peanut for later. They too know it’s October.

    1. They do seem to know where we are in the seasons. They also seem to know that if we aren’t in the back yard, they should try the front door. They have us so well trained.

    poor David all discombobulated 💜💜

    1. When I saw Linda’s prompt, I remembered snagging that photo, and SoCS happened.

The Monarch was from a couple weeks ago, I just forgot to ever include it. The bunnies have been showing up at different points during the day. I guess we’re all getting ready for winter.

  3. I did not see one Monarch all summer so thanks for sharing yours. We drove north this week, and the color was breathtaking. I don’t like cleaning up leaves, but they certainly make an amazing display of color. Happy weekend, Dan.

    1. We have milkweed and butterfly bushes in the back yard. The monarchs came to some common milkweed that pops up on its own next to our driveway. I got these pictures a couple weeks ago. They are such a delight to see. We just have isolated pockets of color around here, but it is beautiful.

  4. We had less butterflies this summer. Maybe the fella down the street no longer grows his butterfly tree.

    1. We didn’t see as many this year either. And we planted stuff just for them.

  5. I looked closely. That little guy was well camouflaged but I found him.

    1. I only had a low resolution picture so I couldn’t zoom in very far. I didn’t want to get any closer because he looked like he had found a great patch of grass to eat.

  6. I can’t remember David being this rattled before. Bright spot, though, is the dumpsters were empty. Let’s don’t tell that to David. I’m not used to seeing him flustered.

The butterflies are beautiful. Let my neighbors keep their precision lawns–I love looking out my front windows and seeing the butterflies, bees and hummingbirds enjoying nature as it should be.

Your pumpkin patch is so cute. I cannot wait for the Great Pumpkin to visit! 🎃 Have a great weekend, Dan.

    1. I’m trying to bring out the many sides of David. The dumpster accident actually happened 3 cars in front of me on my way home from picking up a pizza. The guy took the turn too fast and wham-o!

The pumpkin plants are almost dead, but I’m still expecting Linus to get a visit from the Great Pumpkin. He earned it.

      1. I like seeing more of David this way. He is almost endearing himself to me. 😆

Good gosh, Dan. That guy had to be driving at quite a clip! That would have rattled me for sure.

  7. I haven’t seen one butterfly this year! That is truly unusual. So I am thrilled to see two Monarchs in your yard. Although we were overrun with bunnies spring and summer, they have become very scarce too. A couple more squirrels have joined the assortment of diners I have in my back yard Bird Park. All are welcome. Soon I’ll be adding suet to their menu, so the Woodpeckers will join the party.

Poor David. That sounds like a harrowing trip. Lucky for everyone that those dumpsters were empty! He might still be sitting there waiting for all the debris to get cleaned up!

I love the shot of the tree that the branch blew into. And the foggy drive, but I’m sure glad I wasn’t driving in that fog!

Enjoy this first Saturday in October. Hope you and the Editor have something fun planned for the weekend.

    1. Thanks Ginger. We haven’t seen many butterflies this year, and these were hovering over some random common milkweed in the driveway that never blooms. The stuff in the back yard that does bloom, they ignored.

Our bunnies are also somewhat scarce compared to during the summer.

Nothing much going on this weekend, but happy to have nice cool days to do it in. I hope you have a great weekend.

  9. Those monarch images are so cool. I think they’re official considered endangered now-so sad. Hats off to anyone planting a packet of milkweed seeds this weekend-that’s their favorite food source and it’s been steadily declining. 🤞🏼 Have a great weekend. Good job with meeting the challenge.

  15. It is terrific to see the Monarch. Like most said there have no been too many thins year. We had a couple and that was it. Great photos of your family of squirrels. How many peanuts do you go through in a month? Must be quite a few. Thanks for the mention. Have a great week.

    1. We go through 3-5 lbs of peanuts a week but it varies greatly during the year. The monarchs were the only ones we saw (for sure) this summer. There’s a butterfly that is very similar looking (I think viceroy) that we did see a few times.

  17. I feel just a little bad for David, but I would say that pizza and adult refreshment would be worth the wait and trouble.

Did you tell the Monarch to head south? It’s getting late!

Hope you have had an awesome Saturday, Dan.

  18. Hi David – well all I can say is …what a nuisance – but at least you got to your rendezvous. There are definitely fewer insects around … I did see a wasp yesterday and have seen a few butterflies. Cheers for now – Hilary

      1. I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about David (Travels with Birds) as I wanted to refer to a plant he made note of … for my WEP Horror story – failed there, it’ll have to be a ‘love story’ at another stage! … So hence the ‘David’ … apologies for name error – WEP tomorrow I hope … such is life … cheers Hilary
