I missed this challenge last week, and it made me a little sad. It’s late, but I think I can find a nice selection of photos from the archive.

The topic this week is Old buildings – barns, sheds, houses. Please feel free to use either new or archived photos for this challenge. Use your imagination and see what you can come up with. Be creative and have fun with this challenge.

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge

Like I said, I’m running late, so I’ll skip the normal explanation. (You’re welcome).

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  1. Loved the lighthouse and good work on the shed. What will live in the newly refurbished shed ? Those tobacco sheds are vast.

    1. The new shed has been up for a while (that’s an archive photo). In my original plans, it was to be a seasonal shed, with different yard tools depending on the weather. My wife loaded it first with garden tools, and never moved out.

  2. I love it when a building is repurposed without destroying too much of the original. That new white door looks very chirpy, but my favourite photo is of the tobacco harvest- something I’ve never seen before. Have a good week, Dan!

    1. We have lost a lot of tobacco barns in the area, but several remain, and we still see wagons on the road in September.

  4. Barns and sheds — what a story of work there! That’s a great photo of the old warehouse; I admire how the arched windows are echoed in the arched light; it’s a lovely effect. But I think my favorite photo is the one of the barn that has seen better days; it looks as though the sun is touching the top of the barn and the top of the tree, and the color is striking. I love the way the trees, bare like the barn, seem to be protecting it. That’s quite a portrait. A good beginning to a Monday. Thanks!

    1. I’m glad you liked these. Old barns and buildings are some of my favorite things to see. When nature grows around them, as with that old barn, it seems to welcome the barn back into the fold. I do love that the railroad warehouse was repurposed, especially as an art gallery.

  5. Nice shed update. I love your tobacco barns. I do understand maintaining an old barn and the cost involved. We have some updates that should be made to our old barn, but reality surfaces and we’ll hope it lasts a little longer.

    1. I think that’s a common approach to maintaining a barn, Judy, I can only imagine the cost of repairs, but based on the cost to refurbish my garage/workshop, I would hope for another year, too.

      1. It’s probably a really good thing we aren’t neighbors, or I’d be asking you what to do about one sill plate that’s getting bad. :-) I do have one question about your Craftsman Leaf Sweeper. If it happens to suck up a piece of wood, mulch, or some other item, does it clog up and need to be cleared?

        Liked by 1 person

        1. Actually, it doesn’t. Everything that is sucked in, either through the nose or the hose, goes through a shredder plate. There’s also a inlet where you can insert up to about a 1½” branch. Everything gets reduced to shredded debris. The only time it ever clogs is if I suck up a lot of wet leaves, or if I get small branches inside the hose.

  8. Seeing those tobacco barns is a real treat. I don’t like the product they housed, but the buildings and how they worked is amazing.

    Love that lighthouse.

The last photo of the old warehouse/Windsor Art Center really captures the beauty of the building. The lighting is perfect.

Nice display Dan. Hope you have an enjoyable week.

    1. Thanks Ginger. The tobacco barns all have their wall slats open. Although I never used the products, the aroma driving by is tantalizing.

I was so glad they repurposed the warehouse for something that let it keep much of it’s former appearance.

I hope ou have a great week..

  9. That last photo is a beauty, Dan. Lighting truly is everything in photography and this lighting is just perfect.

I had to laugh about the first photo–chew tobacco. I don’t recall anyone up north chewing tobacco. But then I moved to the south. And men would carry around little Styrofoam cups to…spit out that nasty stuff. Another thing that was culture shock to me. 😄 Thankfully, I rarely see that anymore.

    1. My father chewed tobacco after he quit smoking. Fortunately, I never tried.

  11. Old houses, barns, sheds and especially train depots have so much character and I always think about the stories held within the crumbling walls.

    1. We miss them already, John. They tore 15 down to build an Amazon warehourse, and several more to build a warehouse on spec (still about 60% unoccupied)

    1. It is sad, Darlene. That area went from rural farmland to concrete warehouses in less than two years.

      1. That is very sad. I felt the same when the wooden grain elevators disappeared in the Canadian prairies.

  17. Nice shots Dan.

Are barns becoming buildings from the past? I see fewer and fewer when we are in rural settings.

The state house and old warehouse are fab. I love old buildings. I am always happy when they are restored, especially into art galleries and other cultural places for people to gather.

    1. The State House is historic and is open as a museum and history center. My favorite is the warehouse that was transformed into an art center. It looks like a warehouse, inside and out. So it serves a new purpose, but retains the 19th century character.

Barns are disappearing around here. Most of these were tobacco sheds and don’t really adapt well to other uses. A couple around here have received new roofs and some new side panels so, I guess that means they plan to keep them for the near future. I always feel good when I see a barn being repaired.
