It’s getting late in the year, and time for those of us here in New England to get ready for winter. Since we won’t have too many nice warm days coming, I’ve been trying to take care of the outside projects. One of those involved painting the risers to some steps and a few wooden pieces of structure.

We live a couple miles from the east-west runway of Bradley International Airport (BDL). It’s not the main runway, but a lot of planes land on it, including C-130 cargo planes returning to the Connecticut Air National Guard base (CT-ANG). There’s no mistaking the sound when those planes fly over. The C-130s the CT-ANG flies are powered by four Allison T56-A-lA turboprop engines. We can hear them coming from a long way off.

The best thing about working outside all day is being there when the C-130s fly over on their way home.

There’s a short video in between the gallery and my attempt to remind you that I’ve written a bunch of books.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  3. Great photos Dan and those planes are huge and noisy… Apart from when we lived in Exmouth we have always been ( in different places) but under the flight path in and out of Heathrow so I get the noise and the sights!

The photo are beautiful and our weather is being odd last week we had 0c temps and today though it is raining we are set for a temp of 20c and there’s a yellow flood warning in place! As to the leaves the first could be a Pterodactyl the other one the lower part two elephants feeding with a baby facing the opposite direction and a jubinille one higher up.

    have a good day 💜

    1. We’ve been here for over 40 years, Willow, so the noise is normal. But we still know when one of these guys is in the air above is. There’s an Army Air Guard base at BDL as well. They fly the CH-47 Chinook (twin rotor) helicopters. Those are a different kind of loud.

I was thinking the pair of shadows looked like elephants, but I wasn’t sure. Thanks for adding your thoughts.

  4. We had those huge planes fly over our old house as they were approaching Moffett Field to land. Man they were cool and loud.

Now we have fire protection helicopters practicing water pick ups in nearby Carson River but, not over us, and we see Hot Air Balloons, and motorized sky glider things flying by. It’s neat to see and entertaining.

    That red Maple is gorgeous!!

    1. Seeing the hot air balloons must be neat. We’ve only ever seen them in the distance. We used to have helicopters at CT-ANG that could be equipped for fire fighting. They would loop around, picking up water from the CT River and dropping it again. It looks like fun, but these crews are serious about training, and they are ready to go when called.

      1. I wish we saw more Hot Air Balloons than we do, but what we do see it pretty cool. The Fire Air crew start practicing in Mid Spring here, they are serious.

  5. Those frost-tinged leaves are a clear message for us to get ready to be cold, but they certainly are beautiful. Nothing subtle about that plane! I could barely find the trestle, but still a great image. Thanks for the wonderful fall colors!

    1. That frost on those leaves certainly got my attention. A nice reminder that I’m running out of time. The trestle is deceiving. I could see it quite clearly, but the camera didn’t pick it up well. Pretty soon, it will be the last thing standing.

        1. They approach in pairs. Sometimes, they’re far enough apart and land one right after the other. Sometimes, the second one (wing man) will follow the first one all the way to the runway and go around after the first one lands. We had a friend who was assigned to the base, and he said they practice that landing in case a plane has problems in flight or is damaged.

  8. Great video! You would have to be deaf as a doornail not to hear those babies flying in!

That red maple is awesome. Hooray for the feisty wildflower! The fall colors in your area are impressive. The first leaf critter could be (cartoon) Jeckyl coming home from a toot!

Beautiful shot of Old Glory flying proud and free.

Expecting a freeze here tonight. When I changed the birds water this morning, it had quite an ice build up. Nooooo! I’m not ready for this!

    1. Thanks Ginger. We know the C-130s are in the air, even when we’re inside. Outsode, you can hear their approach for a long time.

The maples are the stars of the show at this point. Showing off a bit, but it’s a welcome sight.

When I power wash the steps, porch and ramp, I clean out the large ceramic bird bath and put it away. We leave a few of the plastic ones out all winter. They ice over, but we fill them so they have water during the day. The ceramic one will be back out there at the first sign of Mr. Robin. He demands good service from his cabana boy.

That frosted leaf told me that winter is coming.

    1. Thanks GP. They used to have A-10s here, but after they were deployed to Iraq, we never saw them again. We had very small cargo planes for a while, and there were rumors of the base closing. Then the C-130s arrived and we’ve been enjoying them ever since.

  11. Periodically we have planes heading to Pease fly over, and we definitely hear them coming. We’re going to have a couple of warm days coming up, and I’ll be finishing up anything outside because wearing winter clothes to garden is not real comfy. Happy Wednesday, Dan.

    1. Happy Wednesday, Judy. I have a few bushes to prune and some leaves to rake or mulch on those warm days.. The maple trees are hanging on to their leaves, but the dogwood has dropped a lot. I have to prune the quince bushes because they block our view when pulling out of the driveway. I’m sure it isn’t the right time to do that, but we don’t have a choice.

  12. Seeing planes fly overhead is always a sight, in spite of the noise. Beautiful autumn photos.

    1. I never get tired of seeing them overhead. The noise only bothers us when the wind shifts and we end up in the takeoff pattern. Everything is loud then.

  14. No one does autumn better than New England. Those leaves are beautiful, Dan. It was 52 here this morning–almost autumn down here and I am so excited! We live just a mile or so from our airport but are not in their path, so miss the adventure of where all those flights are coming from or going.

    1. This is New England’s best season, Lois. I love the fall colors. We are rarely in the takeoff pattern, so the noise isn’t too bad. The planes are a lot lower when landing, so I see more. On takeoff, they’re too high and too loud.

    1. We were worried that the color would be muted this year. We had lots of rain in July/Aug but near drought in Aug/Sept continuing now. But I’ll take sights like this whenever we get them. The flyovers are a bonus.

  22. I lived outside the back gate of the Naval Air Station in Norfolk. The jet fighters were so loud they drowned out any other noise. According to my neighbors, the pilots were throttling back their engines because the public was up in arms about the noise. Supposedly, the jets were so loud they vibrated the paint off cars. (Accordng to reports, anyway.)

    1. Wow. That would be some serious noise. I’ve only heard them at airshows and once when a Navy pilot doing a required airport landing, decided to do a low loop around town (he grew up here). The papers said that he did not fly that plane back.

  25. Are there two planes I see in the video? There was one behind I guess that you didn’t focus on, obviously because it was heading in a different direction. This video kind of took me back to my childhood days. One of my paternal uncle’s apartment was close to Mumbai International Airport. So, whenever we used to visit them on Sundays, I would sit by the window and watch these huge passenger planes fly by. The noise used to be so loud one cannot hear the television, I would love to see those wheels sliding inwards . This would happen every ten minutes or so. My mother didn’t like the location but I guess my aunt/uncle were used to the noise so it didn’t bother them. This was way back in 1987-1990. When they both passed the apartment was sold and I could no longer enjoy that view. My uncle used to fool me saying that I can go up the terrace and lasso the wheels and the wheels will pull me up and I can travel for free and whatnot. I was like Really!

    1. There are two planes, and they are both landing. They land in pairs. Sometimes, like this, they land one after the other. Sometimes, they’re closer, as if one is in trouble. His “wingman” will follow the plane pretending To be in trouble all the way to the runway and then power up and go around. It’s fascinating To see. Your uncle sounds like a pretty cool man.

      1. I don’t remember him vividly now. I was too young then, but I remember the planes. The sad part about my childhood is that I do not remember anyone from my parent’s family, especially from my father’s side and the ones I remember were dead before I was born. Maybe someday I’ll tell you privately the reason for this.
