Welcome to the weekend. This one has been a long time coming and David and I are looking forward to a leisurely break from a busy week. Linda has given us an interesting prompt. Cheryl is standing by with our favorite adult beverages and perhaps a snack.

SoCS by Linda G. Hill

If we were having a beer, you’d be in a weird mood.

“Good afternoon, Dan. Did you finish all those jobs you were complaining about?”

“I don’t think I was complaining about them, David.”

“But?”

“I didn’t finish, but I made good progress.”

“Are your cars in the garage?”

“No, but that’s okay. I still have time.”

“How do you know that?”

“I set the deadline.”

“Yes, yes, but how do you know your deadline is appropriate?”

“Deadlines? What’s wrong with you guys? In case you forgot, it’s Saturday. Here, a John Howell’s Special for David, including three cherries, and a cold Modelo for Dan.”

“It’s like you read our minds, Cheryl.”

“Knowledge is power, Dan.”

“Who said that?”

“I did.”

“No, I mean who said it first?”

“Bacon.”

“Bacon? David, are you ready for pizza already?”

“No, Dan. Although a meat-lovers pizza does sound good, I was referring to Sir Francis Bacon. He published his Meditationes Sacrae. In fifteen-ninety-seven, in which he said something like ‘knowledge is power’ — of course others also get the credit.”

“Others? Did he say it or not?”

“To quote an annoying friend, yes and no.”

“That would be me, the annoying friend. I say that all the time and you hate it.”

“Yes, but in this case, there is reason to use that expression.”

“Why?”

“The phrase, ‘knowledge itself is power’ was published in the sixteen-sixty-eight edition of Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes.”

“Hobbes? The tiger in Calvin and Hobbes?”

“No, Dan. Hobbes was an English philosopher, scientist, and historian. He was also secretary to Thomas Bacon.”

“So, he plagiarized his old boss.”

“Dan. Hobbes is considered a founder of modern political philosophy. But the phrase is generally attributed to Bacon.”

“Political philosophy? Then we’re not talking about him in this bar. Did you two say something about pizza? See, that’s a much better thing to consider than philosophy on a Saturday. Especially political philosophy.”

“Right again, Cheryl. Let’s have that pizza and another round.”

“I still think Hobbes the tiger was wiser than either of those two bums you mentioned.”

“Oh? And what is that Hobbes known for?”

“He once said: ‘I suppose if we couldn’t laugh at things that don’t make sense, we couldn’t react to a lot of life.’ — Pretty profound, wouldn’t you say?”

“He does make a good point. Cheers, Dan.”

The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  1. Looks like the colours of the leaves is increasing. The leafy shadows are so good.
I enjoyed the chat on philosophers

    1. Thanks Brian. The maples have been especially bright this year. I am enjoying walking on these cold crisp mornings. I like finding the shadows, but the public works crew picked up most of the leaves.

I’m glad you liked the chat. A bit heavy for the bar, but I got stuck on knowledge. I hope you’re having a great weekend.

      1. Don’t the public works crews have any respect for photographers 😀
Saturday was quite good and hopefully Sunday will be as well thanks Dan
        Have a fab one yourself

  3. That was TWO full-blown LOLs!! Thank goodness I’ve learned to put my coffee down before I read. Your capture of the moon is wonderful, as is that trapped red leaf on the shrub — what a beauty!

    1. I’m really not trying to ruin your keyboard. The red leaf is in an evergreen shrub at the base of a ramp from our porch to the driveway. I fear it will look like this (from a year when I didn’t prune it).

      Liked by 1 person

      1. That is one enthusiastic evergreen! I definitely see the need to prune! Clever of it to catch that leaf.

        1. We have pruned it every year since. I think that was when I was still working for a living. Too many tasks, not enough weekend.

  4. We’ve got several days of 70’s, and I’ll enjoy every one because we’ve already got 18″ of snow on Mt. Washington. Happy weekend.

    1. Calvin and Hobbes (named after John Calvin and Thomas Hobbes) were the best philosophers of our generation – perhaps all time, GP. We are getting quite a show up here this fall. I’m loving it.

  9. The Cottonwoods are starting to turn here. There was a wee bit of snow on the mountain tops yesterday. It dropped down to the 20’s overnight on Friday and it’s only 27 degrees now. I didn’t get everything pruned but, we did the hoses off the house and the sprinklers turned off. Next week we’re supposed to warm up to the 70’s again. I’ll get the flowers pruned and the cushions put away.

Your full Moon looks huge! I missed it as it was pouring with rain here.

    1. We’re going to get a few days in the 70s as well. I will use one to powerwash the Trex surfaces. The moon was so bright here. I think I could have read a book in our back yard. I think I have everything pruned, but we still have some things that need to be cut down (like the goldenrod).

  10. Hey! You could’ve done a whole piece on Knuckleheads today! :>)

That red maple is spectacular, but I love the fledgling maple that seems to be saying, Look at me! I’m pretty too! The orange wildflower deserves a medal.

Beautiful shots of the sunrise through the park trees, but the picture of the moon is awesome.

I get a real kick out of the leaf critters!

Beautiful sunshine here but only 31 degrees. It’s going to warm up though. Have some 70’s coming this week. Yaaayyyy!

No matter where Old Glory flies, she’s a magnificent sight.

Have a super weekend Dan. How did October get to be half over already?

    Ginger 🦋

    1. Oh, Ginger. Can you believe, I didn’t think to go with Knuckleheads. Smacking my forehead now. Linda says we shouldn’t think much or plan. I wasn’t sure where this was going until I looked up who said that quote. Then I knew I was going with Calvin & Hobbes.

Our little red maples are doing their best to stand with the big boys. They will get there at some point.

It was 32 when I walked this morning. We will see some 70s this week. I should be able to finish the outside chores.

Keep enjoying the fall colors. The Public Works crew picked up the potential shadow critters. I hope more blow onto that sidewalk.

  11. I didn’t know who Calvin and Hobbes were named after! Learn something new every day. If ever anyone got to the heart of things, it was definitely Calvin and Hobbes.

Your fall colors are so pretty. Down here we do mostly green or bare–not too much color on our trees. But when we do see some, it is cause for rejoicing.

So funny about your deadline. Mine is always to have my winter yardwork done by the end of October. With two weekends to spare, I will complete the one small section I have to work on in the front yard tomorrow, and I will be done. Beat the deadline! Have a great weekend, Dan.

    1. Thanks Lois. We like to have the cars in the garage before Halloween, in case anyone decides to play some tricks.

Calvin and Hobbes was the best comic ever. I think it even slightly edged out The Far Side (not by much).

Good luck wrapping up your chores. I guess winter is when you appreciate Florida the most. As long as we get ready on time, I enjoy winter, especially now that I don’t have to drive to work in snow or freezing rain.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Yes! Calvin and Hobbes and The Far Side–the best, both of them! Tough choice.

Did you have Mischief Night when you were a kid? That was the night before Halloween where kids would go out and soap car windows, smash pumpkins, roll houses…a Jersey thing, maybe? Down here, homecoming is the reason to roll people’s trees. You can drive around and know where the high schoolers live!

I am loving our weather now. 40’s-50’s at night-so no A/C and no heat–and 70’s during the day. I am sure the power company is not a fan of this time of year. Not making any $$$$$!

        1. We called it Devil’s Night, but yes, it was a thing. Mostly harmless pranks. For a few years around here, the pranks got serious and some damage was done around the neighborhoods near us. That’s when we decided to get the cars inside.

Our heat is on, but with warm days still possible, the A/C is not off. That decision is not within my job description.
