Happy Saturday! David has been away this week, visiting relatives, and I  have been wrapping up some pre-winter tasks. Today is what might be considered normal weather for late October, 62°f (17°c), but we’re still going to take the afternoon off and reward ourselves with an adult beverage and maybe something to nibble on. Of course, while we’re having this break, we’ll try to work on Linda’s prompt

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “mug.’” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun! –

Stream of Consciousness Saturday by Linda G. Hill

If we were having a beer, you be wasting no time to order that drink.

“Welcome back, David. How was your vacation?”

“Vacation? Dan you couldn’t have picked a worse word if you turned to the antonym section of your Thesaurus.”

“Before he regales us with his tale of woe, would you two like a drink?”

“Yes, Curley. I think our usual will do nicely.”

“Now, David, I thought you were visiting family.”

“My wife’s family. Let’s just say, I’ve never been fully accepted into the fold.”

“How long have you been married?”

“Forty-five years.”

“And you haven’t been able to win them over with your charming ways?”

“They bring out the worst in me.”

“Well, I hope you left that part of you wherever it was you were staying.”

“Upstate New York, Dan. Pretty country, especially this time of year.”

“Can I tell them David sent me?”

“Sure. Point to the mugshot my in-laws have hung in every small Post Office in the area.”

“What exactly did you do to tick them off?”

“Here you go. A nice cold Modelo draft, a glass of John Howell’s Bourbon, a snifter of seltzer and a glass of ice. And, lest I forget again, three cherries.”

“Thanks Curley. Cheers, Dan. As for my transgression, I wasn’t a doctor.”

“They wanted your wife to marry a doctor?”

“Doctor, dentist. They might have even accepted a lawyer for all I know.”

“But you’re a professional man.”

“Nt according to my mother-in-law. She rules the family with an iron hand. Well into her nineties, she’s still in command.”

“And still angry with you?”

“Disappointed, not angry. That’s worse, in case you aren’t aware.”

“Curely, let’s put this man out of his misery. Two orders of Teagan’s mushrooms, and another round when they arrive.”

“Thanks Dan.”

The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  1. The line of Oaks is sure vivid. Love the foggy photos

    1. The oaks seem to have about 15 minutes of vivid color, and then they settle somewhere between red and brown (a range I don’t distinguish very well). I love the fog, and watching the sun struggle to break through made for an interesting walk.

  2. hi Dan firstly I have to say the photos are amazing today, the critter’s and the trees the colours are magical.

It’s great to meet Polly it’s quite the menagerie you have there with Linus, Smokey, the Bunnies and all the slow Joe Crows!

I actually feel sorry for David today it sounds like his mother in law takes after this lady.

    1. Thanks Willow. I had a hard time with “mug.” It led me to David and his mug shot and a little of his softer side.

We don’t see Polly very often, possums are nocturnal. She was heading home after a night of foraging around the yard as my wife was opening up. Like all the others, she’s welcome here.

I like that commercial – thanks!

I have not don’t my SoCs yet but it not an easy one is it 💜💜

        1. We do love the animals around here.

I thought about switching to a mug of beer, but that didn’t spark any interest. Trying to avoid too much planning, I decided to see if I could get to “mug shot.”

Thanks for the sights of your autumn.

    1. Thanks GP. He died when a utility vehicle crashed during operations to contain a brush fire. Any death is sad, but when volunteers die in the line of duty, it feels worse.

  5. It’s hard to find peace these days, isn’t it? Poor David! I hope he has the chance to look at your photos because there’s peace in those lovely trees. I agree that when the branches show their silhouette the effect is striking. I like those thin power lines that run through some of the photos though I’m hard-pressed to say why.

    1. I found the foggy scenes peaceful while walking. The fog also dampens some of the noise. The point where the branches break through has always been my favorite time. I’m glad you like the power lines. It doesn’t matter why. I hope you have a nice weekend.

  7. Your header photo made me cringe. We raked and blew all the leaves yesterday knowing that we’re expecting high winds this weekend and another large drop will come our way. We have a lot of mature trees plus almost four acres which equals a ton load of leaves. I heard a report on the news about the CT wildfire. I hope it gets under control soon.

    1. I walk past that yard, and they’ve already raked several batches of leaves. Many more will be coming down soon. This is the time of year I like having a small lot. We still end up filling a good number of bags, but it’s manageable.

The brush fire is where the fireman died. A utility vehicle carrying several firefighters crashed. I hope you have a nice weekend!

  8. Poor David. It’s tough when one can’t be accepted or applauded for who they are, but I’m sure a drink (or two) and Teagan’s mushrooms helps with forgetting in-laws for awhile.

I love your burning bush, Dan! I have not seen one before that’s such a bright pink. And kudos on the fog photo because I always love a good fog photo. Have a wonderful weekend!

    1. Thanks Mary. The burning bush is really a dark red, but the bright sun moved everything up a notch. It stands out so well. We have to prune it, to prevent damage from the snow, but we never do until the leaves fall. We have planted a few others, but they’re still babies.

  9. Your color is very vibrant this year! It’s good to meet Polly Possum. Does she like peanuts?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. The colors were enhanced by the bright sun. Polly seems to eat just about anything. We’ve read that they like rotted fruit. Years ago, we would see one in the front yard, and we’d leave half an orange out for her/him. It was always gone in the morning.

  10. Your autumn pics are stunning, no surprise there. In-laws can be a tough crowd so we’ve adopted the ‘live and let live’ mantra with in-laws. Have a lovely autumn weekend; hope you’re able to get that list of pre-winter projects completed.

    1. The critical part of the list – the stuff that needs to be done so I can put cars in the garage – is almost done. After that, I can take it slow. We rarely see snow before December, and most of the leaves haven’t fallen yet. I hope you have a great weekend.

  11. Wow! Your Korean Dogwood and Burning Bush are beautiful! We have rare pockets of color here. Nothing near what you have. I think I would never put my camera down!

Oh that possum! They call them opossums here, but I think they are the same thing. Anyway, he looks kinda cute. Welcome to the neighborhood, little guy!

    1. I should have said ‘little gal.’ Sorry, Polly!

    2. I think they are properly called opossums. We’ve just always called her Polly and assumed she’s a she. They are good to have around, They eat every bad thing in the yard and they are immune to almost everything so they are no threat. We don’t get to see her often.

The colors in these photos are bright because of the sun. It was a brilliant day when I took most of these, and like you said, I couldn’t put the camera down.

  12. Haha, poor David, but I can’t help having a level of schadenfreude. (Sorry, that was supposed to be my word of the day Monday, and I only just now got the chance to use it!)
The burning bush is stunning, and I loved seeing the ‘possum. Hugs.

    1. David will be fine. I paid for his bourbon and an order of Teagan’s Mushrooms.

Polly gives little paw hugs to you.

  13. Fall is much more picturesque in your area than here. However, we are inundated with fallen/falling leaves, they just aren’t as pretty as yours!

The Burning Bush, The Korean Dogwood, the Maple and Oak trees are all stunning. Love those foggy shots, especially ‘sunrise on a foggy day’.

How nice to meet Polly Opossum. Thanks for the tip about fruit. We have at least one of her cousins here!

So sorry to see Old Glory lowered once again. Any time she’s lowered it’s sad, but this is particularly sad.

Don’t hurt yourself getting those cars in the garage! The Editor will not be happy if she has to ride with you in an ambulance again!

Have a very enjoyable weekend Dan. A bit cooler now, but still nice weather. See ya next week!

    1. The bright sun made the leaves look even better, Ginger. It brought out colors I sometimes miss.

The foggy day was my favorite. The color was eerie but interesting.

Polly (or some of her family) has been here for over 25 years. We don’t often see her but we see prints in the snow. She’s so cute.

A volunteer fireman dying at a brush fire (or any fire) is so sad. I think the flag would approve being lowered.

I’m taking it easy now that the goal is in sight. In addition to Devil’s Night activity, cars have been broken into not far from our street.

      Have a great weekend !

  16. I can certainly identify with David’s situation. Of course, mine only lasted 15 years but the fact that I was running a major Consumer Healthcare company cut no ice with my second wife’s family. I guess a doctor or lawyer would have fit better. Lovely photos, Dan.

    1. Still not Doctor John. Or, as my ex-mother-in-law frequently said, “Just a working stiff.” I only had to listen to that for five years.

  19. Those colors are as delicious as Teagan’s mushrooms! Things are getting tinged here, but the full force of autumn has not arrived.

Being a doctor is not what it used to be. And I wouldn’t wish being a lawyer on anyone. I’m sure David is happier as he is, and he only has to put up with the disappointed mother-in-law every once in awhile. Some people just can’t be satisfied.

And, as always, good to get new glimpses of the wildlife. (K)

Opossums are actually fairly friendly. They eat almost anything, but they aren’t a treat to the other critters around here.
