Last week, The Great Pumpkin rewarded Linus with a huge pile of peanuts for his hard work and dedication in planting his pumpkin patch. The sincere patch produced a number of pumpkins. Many were eaten while in their early stage of development, but about ten made it to a mature state. We harvested them after the vines died.

We’ve been cutting one or two (depending on size) in half each night and laying them in the yard. By the following morning, the pumpkins are hollowed out shells. My wife caught a few of the culprits enjoying the feast.

For the purpose of this weeks One-Line Wednesday post, I prepared this small slide show:

  • Gray Squirrel eating pumpkin
  • Gray Squirrel eating pumpkin
  • Gray Squirrel eating pumpkin
  • Gray Squirrel eating pumpkin
  • Gray Squirrel eating pumpkin

If you’re old enough to remember when Johnny Carson hosted The Tonight Show, try to imagine his classic way of delivering the one liner

Mmmmmmmm, that’s good pumpkin!

Sammy the squirrel for One-Liner Wednesday by Linda G. Hill

Today’s gallery contains more photos from around the buffet and a few while I was walking.

Enjoy.

    1. He did a good job in the garden, and he and his friends are enjoying the harvest. The Public Works crew is picking up all the leaves, so the shadows are getting hard to find. I like these two.

    1. They are. Happy enough that we bought a few leftover pumpkins at the grocery store.

  4. Linus must have had to do a serious face-washing after that feast. It’s wonderful how that little flower just insists on being bright.

    1. We’re keeping the birdbaths filled so they can clean up. One of them is burying stuff, though. I’m not sure what’s going to happen in the spring. Although we are in a drought, when we fill the birdbaths, we give that little flower a drink, too.

  5. Hi Dan – fun to see … bet the critters all enjoyed their treats – disappointment ahead ‘boss master/mistress’ – they want to know what you’re going to do about the lack of pumpkin food! Cheers – that coyote is great to see … cheers Hilary

    1. We did buy a few leftover pumpkins from the grocery store, but this treat will run out soon. They’ll have to go back to peanuts.

    1. This is so funny. We gave them the seeds, but they grew the pumpkins. They seem to appreciate the food and, in this drought, especially the water we give them. They need it very much.

  8. I wouldn’t be surprised if the raccoons also checked them out at night … but it appears they may have been disappointed.

    1. We haven’t seen raccoons around here, Frank. We do have an opossum, and there is a family of skunks around it the neighborhood. The pumpkins won’t last forever. We’ll be back to bird seed and peanuts pretty soon.

  10. Fun shots of the squirrels. My wife bought a sugar pumpkin as a decoration and was dismayed when squirrels started feasting on it. It didn’t last long as a decoration!

    1. Thanks Jan. So in addition to my cabana boy duties (keeping the birdbaths full) I’m now a busboy. I remove the pumpkin shells after they’re eaten and cut new ones open. They do love them.

  20. Hahahaha! Fun slide show! All these cute critters have definitely found their ‘forever homes’ with the Antions. I know your ‘wild bunch’ will continue to be well fed and watered no matter the weather. Ours too! I’ve seen more birds bathing, and long luxurious baths, in the past couple of weeks than I did all summer! They are great entertainment when they really get serious about their baths.

Imagine the reviews you would get if these cuties could text! The reviews would go viral!

Old Glory looking mighty spiffy with a perfect background.

Happy Hump Day Dan. I miss that ad on tv! :+)

    1. Thanks Ginger. We’d appreciate the good reviews, but I’m not sure we can handle too many more customers. We have also seen birds taking long baths. One little guy just kept going back in for another splash. Unlike Mr. Robin, these guys don’t seem to need the whole tub to themselves. We have a community splash going on quite often.

I do miss the camel. I made some progress outside with chores and in the shop with that cabinet.

I hope you have a great rest of the week,

  22. Thanks for a delightful photo-visit, Dan. The color gold seems to please my eyes lately, so the tree and the wildflower stood out beautifully. But it’s always good to see the critters. The squirrels in DC absolutely loved pumpkins. Hugs.

    1. We still have some color, Teagan, but it’s getting harder to find. That little wildflower is a plucky little sprout. The squirrels are loving the pumpkins. They can have a treat for about another week.
