Happy Saturday. We are dry, and not just David and me. The state of Connecticut is dry. No, not the dry that means no alcohol — we’d have to move — the weather kind, as in drought. We are under a Red Flag warning at the moment, and unusual state for us to be in. We can’t do much about the drought, but David has offered to skip his glass of ice if Cheryl thinks it might help. We will also try to work with Linda’s prompt.

If we were having a beer, you’d be about to be upset.

“Cheers David. Did you find a parking space?”

“Yes, directly across from your car.”

“Underneath that big oak? You didn’t park there, did you?”

“It was the only space left. What’s the problem?”

“The tree is bare, and crows love to rest in it. There’s a whole murder of them.”

“Murder, good word. That’s what they’re going to do to my car. I came here in a beautiful black lab. I’ve be going home in a dalmatian.”

“You boys thirsty?”

“We are parched, Cheryl, just like the landscape out there.”

“We might get some rain tomorrow. In the meantime, there’s a fifty percent chance of bourbon.”

“John Howell’s Bourbon?”

“Of course, David. I’d never serve you a lesser brand. And, don’t worry, I’ll bring the snifter of seltzer and the glass of ice.”

“And the cherries?”

“Of course, David. Of course. And Dan, here’s a cold Modelo for you.”

“Thanks Cheryl. Cheers, Dan.”

“Cheers David.”

“You still walking in the morning?”

“I am. I walk any dry day it’s about twenty-degrees*.”

“Well dry is no problem, we haven’t had rain since September, but it’s going to be twenty-six tonight. That’s getting close. I’m not sure I’d want to be walking in that. Why not wait until it warms up?”

“If I wait, I get tangled up with something else and then I don’t walk. Besides, the crew from Public Works is out there working. At least I’m just walking.”

“What are they doing these days, picking up leaves?”

“This week, they were clearing the sprinkler lines.”

“All week? My landscaper cleared my lines in about two hours.”

“How many zones you got?”

“Three, I think. Maybe four, why?”

“There’s over ninety zones running underneath those four ballfields, and they all run a lot farther than any of your longest one.”

“Okay. I guess they can have a few extra days. They must think you’re pretty weird taking pictures of those leaf creatures.”

“I don’t think I attract much attention. Just some crazy old guy trying to figure out his camera.”

“Maybe they think you’re zooming in on your feet. You know, to make sure your shoes are tied.”

“Hey, that would be easier than bending over.”

    1. Thanks Willow. We desperately need some rain, and certainly more than is in the forecast. The weather is just one of many things we can’t change, so I’ll keep looking for the good and the humorous. (I know, that needs another ‘u’) 😉

I hope you have a great weekend.

  4. If I talk about the rains in Mumbai, the pattern has definitely changed in the last ten years and a lot more in the last thirty years. During my childhood, the first day of the rain would be June 10 (minus plus 2-3 days) and the last day would be around October 10 (minus plus 2-3 days). From June 10 to October 10, there would be showers almost daily. Some days the city would flood, but consistency of rain was always there. Now, it has changed. It does arrive on June 10 but then it stops. July is when it restarts and it pours like hell, in August and September monsoon is on and off and October is simply unpredictable. To summarize, the consistency of monsoon is not like it was in the 1990s. This erratic monsoon behaviour also leads to extremely hot weather conditions and even ruin crops which directly impacts our produce prices especially onions and tomatoes.

    1. This time of year, the impact is muted, since the growing season is over, but wells and reservoirs are beginning to suffer, and wildlife is being hit hard. There is no “normal” weather anymore.

  5. We have the same drought conditions here, and I’m hoping we’ve seen the last of the high 70’s this month because my blueberries have blossomed. Not good. Happy walking.

  7. Your last line still has me laughing Dan. Thank you!

Not at all funny is this drought. Yet there are still those amongst us who deny there is any climate change going on!

Your leaf critters are perfect….I see the same things. Love how vibrant the burning bush is. My burning bush looks pathetic this year.

Love the shot of Old Glory and her reflection in the burning pit. One Flag, Every American….words to live by.

Wishing you a relaxing and pleasant weekend Dan. We’ll all be doing the Happy Dance if we actually get some rain. I know all the plant life and our wild critters will be overjoyed!

    1. Thanks Ginger. Bending over gets harder every year.

It’s hard to deny climate change when we have two weeks in November with 80-degree days. We need rain – a lot of rain. We’re working to keep the birdbaths full and clean. We see lots of little guys drinking from them during the day.

The leaf shadows always catch my attention. They make me smile.

One flag- Every American might be a permanent caption for the Memorial Flag. I think we need to remember that.

I hope you have a nice weekend, and I hope we get the rain we need.

I hope that hawk doesn’t spot your squirrels while they’re busy eating the pumpkins!

    1. Thanks GP. We do have a hawk that circles around here. We also have a new neighbor with an outside cat. The squirrels and birds all activate a warning system when necessary. I hope they stay alert.

I’m glad you like the flag photos. I couldn’t choose between them, so I included both.

  10. We had a long dry spell too, Dan, but we finally got our rain this past week. More to come tonight, so perhaps I can send some of that your way. My brother is getting buried in snow in Colorado and while the photo he sent is so pretty, I prefer the photo over having snow so early. We’re still waiting for our hard frost, but I suspect that will happen in the next two weeks and our marigolds and geraniums will finally give up.

    Have an awesome weekend!

    1. I keep hearing about the rain my brother’s getting in Iowa, but so far, it hasn’t made it here. Give it a map as it leaves your area. I’ve read some posts about the snow in Colorado. I don’t want that much this early, either. We’ve had frosts and freezes. Early last week, I dumped a thick layer of ice out of the birdbaths, then it went up into the 70s and low 80s.

      Have a great weekend.

  12. Come here and learn something new. I didn’t know about clearing out the sprinkler lines. I don’t think I’ve ever even heard of that being done before. But then our sprinkler system is old as the hills so I don’t think I would try it.

I love the header photo. That soccer net and the sprinklers look almost the same–I had to look twice. Such a great capture. David made me laugh about you bending over to make sure your shoes are tied. Makes you wonder what people really are thinking with some of the gyrations we go through to get a good photo. You do give him some very good lines, Dan. Have a great weekend.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks Lois. They have to clear the sprinkler lines here. Otherwise they will freeze and burst. They shoot compressed air through, and (at least in the park) they come back a day later to get rid of any water that settled back in the lines. Some of those lines are 500 to 1,000′ long.

I often wonder what people think when I move to an odd angle and point my camera at the sidewalk. I don’t really care, but I wonder.

So many wildfires burning all around us. You could smell the haze today. The city even issued a bad air quality warning. I’ve enjoyed the sunny days, but we need a few rainy ones to balance it out. Plus, I’d get more done, being more inclined to stay indoors. (K)
