One of the headlines for an article someone things I should read was, “Do You Know What’s Healthy?” Actually, I might, but I’ve never gone too deep into the woods of healthy eating. Oh, I try to be good, but I lean on moderation as opposed to avoidance.

I read some of the article. The idea was that some of the foods we traditionally think are good for us, really aren’t. That, or they aren’t as good as we thought. One bit of good news was that Kale isn’t as good for us as we thought several years ago. I’m glad I dodged that bullet.

Another item mentioned was granola. This one was tricky, as there are so many mixtures of oats and groats that are passed off as granola that it’s hard to draw a one size fits all conclusion. Then the author posed the question, “What do you think about granola?”

Well, the only question I have about the subject is:

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  1. Oh, that food debate! I’m rapidly coming to the conclusion that you should eat what you like- in moderation, of course! Because today’s good keeps becoming tomorrow’s bad for you!

    1. And yesterday’s bad for you keeps becoming, “Oh, wait, those are so bad.” And then there’s eggs – the food we can never agree on for more than a year. I’m with you, Jo, eat what you like in moderation.

  2. Good morning Dan …I guess that the answer to your question is , it depends on how much ice cream is on the bowl…. ☺️😗

The photos are lovely and the leaves look glorious this time of year 💜

I’m glad you like the photos. I love the way autumn tried to hang around.

  3. Thanks for the good start to my morning! The trestle photo — blue sky, bare trees and all — is a beauty! Your topic has me reaching for my soapbox. I think back to my grandma’s summer pierogi dinners: butter and cheese on our plates, sugar in our iced tea…tsk, tsk. And yet we were all healthier for everyone around the table. The older I get, the more I think that healthy eating has to do with friends and family to eat with. Talking and laughing burns calories, makes you breathe deeply, and lowers cholesterol, right? As for kale, another close call for the keyboard.

    1. I am a firm believer that context is critical when making decisions, so your observation seems valid to me. Eating in a setting like you describe has to be better than eating in a lab being monitored by a bunch of cone heads.

Pull that soapbox out and shout it, Maureen!

  6. Hahahaha! I almost lost my orange juice on your one-liner today! I strive for moderation Dan, always have. I think the food pyramid should be done away with and people should just get in touch with their common sense again when it comes to eating healthy, or at least reasonably healthy.

The ice from the emptied birdbaths looks just like our yard.

Love the sunlit leaves, but especially Old Glory sunlit. Beautiful sight.

Stay warm. 14F right now….tonight will be 18F. Brrrrr. Nope, my old bones are not liking this!

    1. I think you’re right about that food pyramid, Ginger. I don’t need advice from the experts. I’ll just continue trying not to eat stupid.

I love finding the sunlit leaves. It’s one of the wonderful things about autumn as it gradually gives up to winter. We go a little snow last night. Just a dusting, but the sidewalk needs to be cleared. I won’t mind doing that.

Stay warm. Our bones weren’t made for sub-20 degrees.

  7. Not only is granola a health food when topping ice cream, ice cream is also a health food when topped with granola!

Meanwhile, your Wizard of Oz tree made me laugh …. and thumbs up to the last two images of leaves.

I’m glad you liked that tree. I’m going to walk on the other side of the street as I pass that one.

  10. Excellent photos and captions, Dan! Re your seriocomic discussion of kale and granola, those edibles have been contemplated by the great philosophers for so long that they don’t know whether to put them on the food pyramid or an Egyptian pyramid. :-)

    1. Haha – Thanks Dave. I’m not a great philosopher so it will take me longer (and much more ice cream) to arrive at a conclusion.

  12. I saw Smokey! I also saw what looked like an arm grabbing the tree you thought looked the apple trees from the Wizard of Oz. I also thought that arm belonged to the Wicked Witch of the West because the green needles/leaves looks sort of like a body and who else but the Wicked Witch of the West is green in that movie?

I put granola on my yogurt. I think it’s getting a bad rap these days because of the oil used and all the sugar in it.

I’m trying to get away from seed oils these days. Getting it out of my baking is the hardest part, but I’m doing better by switching out half the vegetable/seed oil with unsweetened applesauce. You can’t tell the difference and my cakes are sill moist and have a nice crumb.

    1. I think I recall my wife using applesauce in baking. Substitutions like that make sense without compromising the feel-good effect. A sensible approach under your own thought process is so much better than knee-jerk reactions to study results.

Regarding healthy eating I discovered years ago that eating three or four bowls of popcorn each night was two to three bowls too many.

  14. I think we just need to start using smaller plates. That’s the best start ;-) As for granola, best to make your own so you can put what you want and what’s good for you in it!

    1. We take that approach with mixed nuts. It’s our own mix. That would make sense for granola.

  15. Oh, the foods we eat…never ending discussions. I make my own granola–with brown sugar and maple syrup. I don’t care–I love it! I never got on the kale bandwagon, either. We both dodged a bullet. 😀

  17. Is granola healthy? Depends on how much sugar and preservatives they shove into what could be an otherwise halfway healthy snack. Glad to hear that Kale is out. Never could get into it. Love the photos!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks Jan. I guess kale isn’t so much out, as there is something better. If I recall correctly, it’s collard greens – also not like to be a regular side, but I have had them and they can be prepared nicely (probably in an unhealthy fashion).

  23. Well, Dan, I am a firm believer that the wisest route to healthy eating is preparing your own foods. I make my own granola, so know exactly the good and the frivolous of it. And as far as kale, I cannot say I am disappointed by its new status. Healthy to me is not confining oneself to a certain regimen unless it is well rounded and diverse.
